Apple wants total control over distributing films...

No one can say that Apple has taken a light touch in promoting, "F1: The Movie," but the film is being distributed theatrically by Warner Bros. — and Apple reportedly wants more power.

Brad Pitt in "F1"
It's perhaps a sign of confidence in how "F1" is going to fare at the box office, and it's definitely a turn around from when Apple said to be cutting back on both big-budget movies and theatrical releases of them. According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple executives are now looking at moving into film distribution.

Apple does tend to prefer to own the whole stack in any field, and a lot of its iPhone success has been down to how it controls everything from the...

Macworld

If you are concerned about your privacy and security online using a VPN could give you some reassurance. Apple provides various measures in macOS that make Macs more secure, but if you want to ensure that the connection between your Mac and the internet is protected, rather than the computer itself, you need a VPN.

watchOS 26 beta 2 might have the weirdest Apple...

Macworld

Every year, when Apple rolls out betas of the new operating systems after WWDC, we advise readers to be cautious about installing them on their primary devices. Betas are, by their nature, unfinished and imperfect software, and they are likely to contain bugs. (Spotting the bugs is what the beta program is for!) So it should come as no surprise that the second developer beta of watchOS 26 contains a known bug… and it’s quite a serious one.

For one specific line of Apple Watches, the Hermès editions, simply installing the second beta is enough to cause continuous crashing. Apple acknowledges the issue in its watchOS 26 beta release notes. Under the section for beta 2, the company notes:

I’m calling it: The iPhone 17 Air is going to flop

Macworld

Apple knows best—or certainly appears to think so. Steve Jobs famously said the company’s job was not to listen to customers, because they would ask, metaphorically speaking, for faster horses rather than cars. Thus, whenever rivals rush to jump aboard the latest bandwagon, whether netbooks or foldables or smart rings or AI chatbots, Apple quietly sticks to its own path, which more often than not proves to be the right one.

So when word got out that Apple was working on an ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air for launch later this year, and some people in the media responded with skepticism, it’s unlikely that company executives let this worry them. Everyone’s entitled...

Syntech Chronos 68 magnetic keyboard review: Gamer...

The Syntech Chronos 68 is a highly customizable magnetic switch keyboard that, with some small Mac-specific issues aside, is not a bad choice for gamers.

Syntech Chronos 68
Gaming keyboards do their best to offer an aesthetically pleasing physical interface, while also tending to be quite visually loud. Finding a keyboard that's also compact and usable is also not impossible with the options available on the market.

Add on new technologies like magnetic switches, and it becomes a lot harder to find one that can do it all. Doing all that while potentially not looking completely out of place on a Mac desktop becomes a challenge.

After a rocky stretch, Apple managed to bounce back last month with a 15% jump in iPhone sales, driven largely by renewed demand in the U.S. and China.

Apple's 'F1' ad in Wallet won't...

Apple Wallet has begun advertising Apple Pay promotions via notifications, and while iPhone users are losing their mind, they can toggle the feature off starting in iOS 26.

Apple Wallet tells people how to save money with notification and in-app promotion feature
Advertising has become a blunt instrument in surveillance capitalism largely as a result of Google's success. This shouldn't mean we reject the premise of advertising as a whole, given that for now, it remains the fuel for the content engine on the Internet.

Ads can run from silly and useless to invasive and annoyingly persistent. Somewhere in the middle is a genuinely useful tool for consumers.

Courts say AI training on copyrighted material is...

A ruling in a U.S. District Court has effectively given permission to train artificial intelligence models using copyrighted works, in a decision that's extremely problematic for creative industries.

Content creators and artists have been suffering for years, with AI companies scraping their sited and scanning books to train large language models (LLMs) without permission. That data is then used for generative AI and other machine learning tasks, and then monetized by the scraping company with no compensation for the original host or author.

Following a ruling by a U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California issued on Tuesday, companies are being given free rein to train with just about any published media that they want to harvest.

iPhone Customers Upset By Apple Wallet Ad Pushing F1...

An anonymous reader shares a report: Apple customers aren't thrilled they're getting an ad from the Apple Wallet app promoting the tech giant's Original Film, "F1 the Movie." Across social media, iPhone owners are complaining that their Wallet app sent out a push notification offering a $10 discount at Fandango for anyone buying two or more tickets to the film.

The feature film, starring Brad Pitt, explores the world of Formula 1 and was shot at actual Grand Prix races. It also showcases the use of Apple technology, from the custom-made cameras made of iPhone parts used to film inside the cars, to the AirPods Max that Pitt's character, F1 driver Sonny Hayes, sleeps in. However well-received the film may be, iPhone users don't necessarily want their built-in utilities, like their digital wallet, marketing to them.

Mosyle announces AccessMule to solve a major blind...

One of the most common blind spots in small business security is access management for various company resources. Today’s IT teams are moving fast (and often understaffed), solving customer problems, and juggling shifting responsibilities as the business grows and evolves. Many SMBs also don’t have a dedicated IT team. They might be fixing things by committee or just trusting that vendors have these problems solved. Behind the scenes, there’s usually little visibility into who still has access to which tools, accounts, or SaaS apps.
