How to manage depth control in iPhone photos

Macworld

Photos can pop when one area is in sharp focus and the other blurry, providing the impression of depth in a two-dimensional image that matches how our eyes focus on objects, even though we don’t typically perceive this. This technique once required a lens of the sort found on an SLR or DSLR (analog or digital single-lens reflex) or mirrorless camera. You adjust the f-stop, traditionally noted with an ƒ, which changes the depth of field or the range from the camera lens to a further point that can be in focus.

Apple’s switch to an array of two or more back-facing camera lenses (starting with the iPhone 7 Plus) and a special Portrait mode built for it made this kind of sophisticated-looking feature available to hundreds of millions of people. More recent phones can also perceive depth on the front-facing camera by using infrared sensors, allowing depth processing.

The effect can be clear when you use it deliberately...

Apple's earnings report for the second quarter of the company's 2024 fiscal year showed a slide in hardware sales, especially for the iPhone. Nonetheless, Apple beat analysts' estimates for the quarter thanks to the company's rapidly growing services revenue.

iPhone revenue dropped from $51.33 billion in the same quarter last year to $45.96 billion, a fall of about 10 percent. This was the second consecutive quarter with declining iPhone...

[Fix] Errors Importing Android WhatsApp Chats to iPhone

Move to iOS makes it super-easy to transfer all the data on your old Android phone, including WhatsApp chats, to a new iPhone. It’s reliable for the most part. However, like some users, you might encounter an unknown error prompt saying “something went wrong,” especially if you’re transferring large volumes of data. Although tedious, this […]

Apple Q2 2024 earnings: Analysts’ expectations...

Macworld

Apple on Thursday announced its second quarter 2024 earnings, posting revenue of $90.8 billion for the quarter, a 4 percent decline year over year, and quarterly earnings per diluted share of $1.53, which is one cent higher than last year. The company reported $23.6 billion in profit.

Apple beat the analysts’ predicted revenue of $90 billion and earnings per diluted share of $1.50.

iPhone sales, which usually buoy Apple’s results, took a hit this quarter, posting $46 billion in revenue, which is a 10 percent decrease from the second quarter of 2023. Wearables, Home, and Accessories revenue was also down 10 percent. iPad sales were also down 17 percent.

Apple’s Services set a record for the quarter and saw a jump in revenue YoY of 14 percent, while Mac sales increased about 4 percent.

iOS 17.5 beta feature makes sending in your iPhone...

Macworld

Sending your iPhone in for repair was always a little nerve-wracking. Not just because you no longer have access to what may be the most important gadget in your life, but because you never know if it’s safe.

Apple’s recommended procedure for preparing your device for service is to back up your phone, turn off Apple Cash, remove all cards from Wallet, and then remove your iPhone from Find My. This also removes Activation Lock. The fine print says, “Apple might not be able to service your device if Find My isn’t turned off.” It’s all very worrying and not the smooth and seamless experience we’re used to from Apple.

That’s about to change, it seems....

The Last Thing the iPad Needs Is a Spec Bump

An anonymous reader shares a column: When Apple CEO Tim Cook and a bunch of his deputies take the virtual stage next week to announce new iPads, they're going to spend a lot of time talking about specs. If the rumors are true, we're going to get new iPad Pros with OLED screens and thinner bodies, new Airs with faster chips and a correctly placed front camera, and a couple of new accessories. Before they even launch, I feel confident telling you these are the best iPads ever. But after all these years, I still don't know how to tell you whether you should want an iPad. Or what you'd want to do with it.

This has been true forever, of course. The iPad is the jack-of-all-trades in Apple's lineup, a terrific device in many ways that still feels increasingly redundant now that so many people have big phones and long-lasting laptops. Apple seems to have spent the last decade-plus enamored with the idea of the iPad as a shapeshifter -- a device that can be exactly what you need at...

Apple Adds More Carve-outs To Its EU Core Tech Fee...

Apple is tweaking how it applies a new fee that can apply to iOS developers in the European Union as it continues to configure its approach to the bloc's Digital Markets Act (DMA): Developers of free apps will be able to avoid the fee entirely under changes it announced Thursday, which apply from today, while other developers earning under a certain revenue threshold will get longer before they have to pay Apple the fee. From a report: The so-called "core technology fee" remains opt in for iOS developers in the region, as Apple continues to offer its standard business terms, but those wanting to take up new entitlements the DMA has required Apple to offer -- such as allowing sideloading of apps, third party app stores, and support for alternative payment tech than Apple's own -- must agree to the set of business terms that include the CTF (as Apple calls it).

The fee remains under scrutiny in the region where the Commission, which enforces the DMA on Apple and other...

Google's Payments To Apple Reached $20 Billion...

Alphabet paid Apple $20 billion in 2022 for Google to be the default search engine in the Safari browser, according to newly unsealed court documents in the Justice Department's antitrust lawsuit against Google. From a report: The deal between the two tech giants is at the heart of the landmark case, in which antitrust enforcers allege Google has illegally monopolized the market for online search and related advertising. The Justice Department and Google will offer closing arguments in the case Thursday and Friday, with a decision expected later this year.

Google and Apple had hoped to shield the payment amount from public disclosure. At the trial last fall, Apple executives testified that Google paid "billions," without specifying a number. A Google witness later accidentally disclosed that Google pays 36% of the revenue it earns from search ads to Apple. Court documents filed late Tuesday ahead of the closing arguments mark the first public confirmation of the figures by...

Sixty years ago, on May 1, 1964, at 4 am in the morning, a quiet revolution in computing began at Dartmouth College. That's when mathematicians John G. Kemeny and Thomas E. Kurtz successfully ran the first program written in their newly developed BASIC (Beginner's All-Purpose Symbolic Instruction Code) programming language on the college's General Electric GE-225 mainframe.

Little did they know that their creation would go on to democratize computing and inspire generations of programmers over the next six decades.

The iPad, remember that? It’s been a minute since Apple unveiled a new tablet–about 807,690 minutes, to be a bit more precise–but all indications point to brand new models being rolled out as part of an Apple keynote next week, on May 7.

It’s really odd for Apple to release new hardware in May, much less hold an event for it, but that’s exactly what’s happening on May 7 with the “Let Loose” event. That will make a pretty exciting lead-up to WWDC, which begins on June 10.

Apple Vision Pro: Everything you need to know

Macworld

Apple Vision Pro went on sale in the U.S. on February 2, 2024. It’s a mixed reality headset (Apple calls it a “Spatial Computer”) that marries an M2 processor with a lot of custom silicon, sensors, cameras, and more. The starting price of $3,499 and limited availability means that it’s a niche product, but it’s the first in a new category that Apple believes will be critical in the coming years.

Apple Vision Pro release date: UK, Canada, Europe, Australia

Apple is yet to say when Vision Pro will be available to buy outside the U.S. beyond saying that it will be shipping to “more countries” later in 2024.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has suggested that the Vision Pro will be launched outside the U.S. before WWDC in June. He believes that will be necessary to enthuse the developers attending Apple’s Worldwide...

Fortnite’s lengthy exile from the iPhone and iPad looks set to end soon, at least in the EU. Having declared back in January its intention to bring the popular game back to iOS in 2024, Epic Games today boasted that it will also return to iPadOS this year.

Back in 2020, Epic tested the limits of Apple’s App Store policies by adding a direct payment option to the game. Apple, predictably, responded by removing Fortnite from its platforms (Google did the same) and deleting the company’s developer account. While Epic’s account has since been reinstated, Fortnite remains unavailable in the App Store.

iOS 17.5 beta 4 arrives a week before the May iPad...

Macworld

It’s been a month since the release of iOS 17.4, which introduced a few minor tweaks (like new emojis) for all users, but it has a massive change to app distribution for those in the European Union. In compliance with the Digital Markets Act, that version allowed alternate app stores, changed policies and terms around apps, browsers that use their own engines, and more.

Typically, a new iOS version is followed almost immediately by a beta of the next point release, so the month-long absence of any iOS beta is a strange occurrence. We expect the beta to continue for at least a few weeks; the final release of iOS 17.5 might not even come until May.

Update April 30: Apple has released the fourth beta of iOS 17.5. We can probably expect the final release next week, when...

These accessories will let you maximize your Delta...

Since Delta debuted on the App Store about two weeks ago; I have logged far too many hours playing my childhood games (more than I care to share). The more I used the emulator the more I learned about its capabilities. Did you know you could Airplay Delta to an Apple TV and use your iPhone as a controller? Or that you could connect up to four controllers at once to play games with friends? So many quality of life features that I have been taking advantage of. These features are best used with some corresponding accessories. I wanted to list some of my favorites that I have been using to really get the most out of Delta!

Stop losing stuff with this 4-pack of AirTags for $...

Macworld

AirTags are the rare Apple device that’s both cheap and designed to work with non-Apple devices. And today you can get set up for less: Amazon is selling a four-pack of AirTags for $80, a savings of $25 and $36 less than you’d pay separately.

AirTags are circular Bluetooth trackers that add Find My tracking to keys, bags, and other items that aren’t made by Apple. The small white-and-chrome discs connect to the app just like an iPhone or MacBook and alert you when something is left behind and can help you find something that goes missing. A lost item attached to an AirTag can tap into the vast Find My network to track it down and they’re small and light enough to fit just...

If your iPhone alarm stopped working in iOS 17.4.1,...

Macworld

People who rely on the iPhone’s alarm to wake up from sleeping may be in for a rude awakening. Or rather un-awakening. Social media is filled with reports claiming that the iPhone alarm isn’t working, causing users to oversleep and turn to TikTok to complain about the issue before eventually calling their employer to let them know they’ll be late.

According to The Wall Street Journal’s Joanna Stern, Apple is aware of the problem and is working on a fix. She has not encountered the problem, alerting her followers on X that her iPhone woke her up “right on time.”

Today Show called me last night and said iPhone alarms aren't working! I hadn't heard that but Apple confirmed this AM that it...

Macworld

The AirTag from Apple is a compact tracking device that offers precise locating ability. Unlike a GPS tracker, which requires cell service and may drain a battery quickly, an AirTag relies on the distributed Find My network of iPhones, iPads, and Macs that hundreds of millions of people around the world carry with them, and uses Bluetooth LE to send a signal to other devices.

Find the best AirTag accessories, key rings, holders, and bag tags we’ve tested.

For some reason which utterly eludes me, 2024 seems to be the year of AI hardware. We’ve had the Humane AI Pin, the Rabbit R1, and even former Apple design chief Jony Ive reportedly seeking a billion-dollar bet for his own attempt.

Reviews of Humane were brutal, with those who tried it as unimpressed by its performance as they were bemused as to its purpose – and the Rabbit R1 isn’t faring too much better, with Marques Brownlee describing...

It makes no sense to give the iPad Pro an M4 chip...

Macworld

When you’re a kid, being an inventor sounds like an impossibly glamorous job–and a simple one, too. All you have to do is invent something brilliant (like, say, the iPad), then sit back and wait for the checks to roll in. But when you grow up you learn about capitalism and investors and stock prices and realize that everything is a lot more complicated. One-off brilliance is not enough—you need an ongoing revenue stream, and that means releasing new things on a regular basis, each preferably better than the last.

Finding ways to make the iPad better every 18 months (but not so good that you can’t surpass it again next time) is tricky enough, but Apple made another rod for its own back when it split the device into multiple lines: the standard iPad, the iPad mini, the iPad Air, the iPad Pro. Now you have to make sure the iPad is better than last year’s model, the iPad Air is better than the iPad, and the Pro is better...

Apple Targets Google Staff To Build AI Team

Apple has poached dozens of AI experts from Google and has created a secretive European laboratory in Zurich, as the tech giant builds a team to battle rivals in developing new AI models and products. From a report: According to a Financial Times analysis of hundreds of LinkedIn profiles as well as public job postings and research papers, the $2.7tn company has undertaken a hiring spree over recent years to expand its global AI and machine learning team. The iPhone maker has particularly targeted workers from Google, attracting at least 36 specialists from its rival since it poached John Giannandrea to be its top AI executive in 2018.

While the majority of Apple's AI team work from offices in California and Seattle, the tech group has also expanded a significant outpost in Zurich. Professor Luc Van Gool from Swiss university ETH Zurich said Apple's acquisitions of two local AI start-ups -- virtual reality group FaceShift and image recognition company Fashwell -- led Apple...

Pros

  • Not just for Apple products

Cons

  • Expensive

If you work on the go a lot, the Journey Nexa is a fantastic protective laptop sleeve for your MacBook–provided you are willing to pay its price. The workmanship is outstanding, and there are two integrated wireless chargers for the iPhone and AirPods. A matching USB-C cable is included, but the case has no additional storage space for it or any other accessories. To get the maximum charging power out of it, you will also need an additional power supply or one with multiple ports.

The EU Will Force Apple To Open Up iPadOS

As reported by Bloomberg (paywalled), Apple's iPadOS will need to abide by EU's DMA rules, as it is now designated as a gatekeeper alongside the Safari web browser, iOS operating system and the App Store. "Apple now has six months to ensure full compliance of iPadOS with the DMA obligations," reads the EU's blog post about the change. Engadget reports: What does Apple have to do to ensure iPadOS compliance? According to the DMA, gatekeepers are prohibited from favoring their own services over rivals and from locking users into the ecosystem. The software must also allow third parties to interoperate with internal services, which is why third-party app stores are becoming a thing on iPhones in Europe. The iPad, presumably, will soon follow suit. In other words, the DMA is lobbing some serious stink bombs into Apple's walled garden. In a statement published by Forbes, Apple said it "will continue to constructively engage with the European Commission" to ensure its designated services...
