Apple unveils iPhone 16e, eliminating the budget...

Apple has introduced its latest iPhone, and it’s a huge shakeup to the iPhone lineup. It’s not an update to the $429 iPhone SE, which was last updated three years ago. Instead, it’s a new iPhone 16 model, the iPhone 16e, which comes in one size and shaves $200/£200 off the starting price.
It’s a huge leap up in capabilities over the old third-generation iPhone SE, but also a big step up in price. Now, the iPhone SE has been eliminated from the iPhone lineup, as have a number of older models. Apple no longer sells a “budget” phone, just a less-expensive version of the current model.
Pre-orders for the new model begin on February 21, with availability starting on February 28. It is available in white or black, with prices starting at $599/£599 for the 128GB model.

Apple announces “iPhone 16e” to replace iPhone SE,...
As expected, Apple has released a new low-end iPhone into its lineup to replace the aging iPhone SE. The iPhone 16e is a 6.1-inch phone with an edge-to-edge OLED screen and a display notch, an Apple A18 processor inside (similar to, though not exactly the same as, the regular iPhone 16), a USB-C port and Action Button, and Apple's first in-house cellular modem, dubbed the Apple C1.
The iPhone 16e starts at $599 for 128GB and will be available for preorder on February 21. The phone will be available on February 28. A 256GB version and a 512GB version will run you $699 and $899, respectively.

Google Play Books Purchases on iOS Now Skirt the App...
Google has gained permission to sell its e-books and audiobooks directly to customers through its iOS app, Google Play Books. From a report: While iOS apps today can offer access to content previously purchased elsewhere, like e-books bought via a website, developers have to request a specific exception to link their iOS app's users to the company's own website to make purchases. According to a brief post on Google's blog, users will now be able to click on a new "Get book" button in the Google Play Books iOS app which will take them to the Google Play website to complete their e-book or audiobook purchase.
From there, users will be able to see their recently opened book listings and complete a purchase using their Google Account and saved payment information. By processing the transaction on its own website, Google can avoid paying Apple a commission (generally 30%) on in-app purchases of digital content.

A tech enthusiast has successfully transplanted the internal components of an iPhone SE 3 into the body of a Nokia Lumia 1020 Windows Phone, according to a post on Reddit's r/hackintosh forum. The modification preserves all key functions of the iPhone SE 3, including its 12-megapixel camera, 5G capabilities, and Touch ID sensor, which has been relocated to the back of the device. The project retains the Lumia 1020's distinctive design while upgrading its outdated microUSB port to Apple's Lightning connector.

Big news for people who prefer their product announcements to be pre-announced: Apple CEO Tim Cook says that the company has something brewing for Wednesday, February 19. Cook referred to "the newest member of the family," suggesting a launch event focused on a single product rather than multiple refreshes throughout its product lineup.
Most rumors point to the "family" being the iPhone and the "newest member" being an updated version of the entry-level iPhone SE. The German antitrust authority has charged Apple with abusing its market power through its app tracking tool and giving itself preferential treatment in a move that could result in daily fines for the iPhone maker if it fails to change its business practices. Apple has released new security fixes for iPhones and iPads in the form of iOS 18.3.1 and iPadOS 18.3.1. According to Apple's release notes, these updates patch an actively exploited security flaw in the USB Restricted Mode feature, which requires users to unlock their devices periodically to continue using USB data connections via a device's Lightning or USB-C port.
Apple says that the vulnerability, labeled CVE-2025-24200, "may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals." We don't know anything more specific about who those individuals are or why they might have been targeted.

In Apple’s first-quarter earnings, the Mac leads the...
Apple fell slightly short of investor expectations when it reported its first-quarter earnings today. While sales were up 4 percent overall, the iPhone showed signs of weakness, and sales in the Chinese market slipped by just over 11 percent.
CEO Tim Cook told CNBC that the iPhone performed better in countries where Apple Intelligence was available, like the US—seemingly suggesting that the slip was partially because Chinese consumers do not see enough reason to buy new phones without Apple Intelligence. (He also said, "Half of the decline is due to a change in channel inventory.") iPhone sales also slipped in China during this same quarter last year; this was the first full quarter during which the iPhone 16 was available.

Apple chips can be hacked to leak secrets from Gmail...
Apple-designed chips powering Macs, iPhones, and iPads contain two newly discovered vulnerabilities that leak credit card information, locations, and other sensitive data from the Chrome and Safari browsers as they visit sites such as iCloud Calendar, Google Maps, and Proton Mail.
The vulnerabilities, affecting the CPUs in later generations of Apple A- and M-series chip sets, open them to side channel attacks, a class of exploit that infers secrets by measuring manifestations such as timing, sound, and power consumption. Both side channels are the result of the chips’ use of speculative execution, a performance optimization that improves speed by predicting the control flow the CPUs should take and following that path, rather than the instruction order in the program.

With iOS 18.3, Apple Intelligence is now on by...
As is custom, Apple rolled out software updates to all its platforms at once today. All users should now have access to the public releases of iOS 18.3, macOS Sequoia 15.3, watchOS 11.3, iPadOS 15.3, tvOS 15.3, and visionOS 2.3.
Also, as usual, the iOS update is the meatiest of the bunch. Most of the changes relate to Apple Intelligence, a suite of features built on deep learning models. The first Apple Intelligence features were introduced in iOS 18, with additional ones added in iOS 18.1 and iOS 18.2
iOS 18.3 doesn't add any significant new features to Apple Intelligence—instead, it tweaks what's already there. Whereas Apple Intelligence was opt-in in previous OS versions, it is now on by default in iOS 18.3 on supported devices.

A new lawsuit filed against gyroscope and accelerometer supplier for Apple, InvenSense, accuses the company of failing to tell investors about the concessions it made to secure a recent deal.
