How to use a spare keyboard or numpad as a macropad...
The Stream Deck is great for running macros on your Mac, but there are ways to do it significantly cheaper. Sometimes, all it takes is a spare keyboard or a secondary numpad.
Epomaker EK21 works with Via for macros
In the pursuit of productivity, users can turn to macros as a way to get things done on their Mac. By hitting specific keys or key combinations on their keyboard, using configuration software supplied by the manufacturer, tasks can be sped up.
These are different from keyboard shortcuts, in that you often just have one action performed with keyboard shortcuts. Macros, however, can be complex enough to trigger multiple functions.

Proton lawsuit targets Apple
Swiss privacy technology company Proton has filed a federal antitrust lawsuit against Apple in California, claiming Apple maintains an unlawful monopoly over app distribution and payment processing. It cites harm to developers and consumers.
The proposed class action, filed in Oakland, alleges Apple forces developers to distribute apps only through its App Store. It also claims Apple imposes mandatory payment processing and extracts commissions of up to 30%.

Analyst: M5 Vision Pro, Vision Air, and smart...
Apple's Vision Pro hasn't made huge waves in the market, partly due to its steep price and "everything including the kitchen sink" feature set. But Apple hasn't given up on the platform yet; a prominent analyst with a strong record of accurate projections for Apple's product lineup, Ming-Chi Kuo, published a roadmap that shows Apple beginning to roll out a new wave of mixed reality devices in 2027.
Kuo says Apple still "views head-mounted devices as the next major trend in consumer electronics." We already knew Apple CEO Tim Cook felt that way before the Vision Pro came out, but continued investment seems to indicate that Apple hasn't been dissuaded by the relatively low sales of the Vision Pro as a niche product. However, Kuo notes that "Apple is not expected to launch any new head-mounted devices in 2026."

Apple Loses Bid To Dismiss US Smartphone Monopoly...
Apple must face the U.S. Department of Justice's lawsuit accusing the iPhone maker of unlawfully dominating the U.S. smartphone market, a judge ruled on Monday. From a report: U.S. District Judge Julien Neals in Newark, New Jersey, denied Apple's motion to dismiss the lawsuit accusing the company of using restrictions on third-party app and device developers to keep users from switching to competitors and unlawfully dominate the market.
The decision would allow the case to go forward in what could be a years-long fight for Apple against enforcers' attempt to lower what they say are barriers to competition with Apple's iPhone.

Scammers are impersonating UPS and trying to steal iPhone users' information.
Text messages claiming to be from the package delivery service UPS have been popping up as part of a new phishing scam. Much like the fake DMV texts our staffers receiver earlier in June 2025, which scared people with claims of unpaid traffic tickets and threats of legal action, the fraudulent UPS texts inform users of a supposed failed package delivery.

A senior researcher's exit and a near-mutiny among Apple Intelligence engineers expose Apple's struggle to stay competitive in the AI arms race.
Senior Siri researcher leaves Apple
Apple is facing mounting internal fractures over its AI strategy, losing one of its top researchers while scrambling to keep key teams on board. It increasingly looks like a crisis of confidence in Cupertino.
Tom Gunter, one of Apple's most senior large language model researchers, has left the company after eight years. Colleagues say his deep expertise is tough to replace, especially as rivals like Meta and OpenAI throw around multimillion-dollar pay packages to poach talent.

Apple Weighs Using Anthropic or OpenAI To Power Siri...
Apple is considering using AI technology from Anthropic or OpenAI to power a new version of Siri, according to Bloomberg, sidelining its own in-house models in a potentially blockbuster move aimed at turning around its flailing AI effort. From the report: The iPhone maker has talked with both companies about using their large language models for Siri, according to people familiar with the discussions. It has asked them to train versions of their models that could run on Apple's cloud infrastructure for testing, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing private deliberations.
If Apple ultimately moves forward, it would represent a monumental reversal. The company currently powers most of its AI features with homegrown technology that it calls Apple Foundation Models and had been planning a new version of its voice assistant that runs on that technology for 2026. A switch to Anthropic's Claude or OpenAI's ChatGPT models for Siri would be an acknowledgment...

Macworld
Apple’s most affordable new laptop is a $999 MacBook Air. For a lot of people, that’s still too expensive, especially when compared to Chromebooks and budget PCs. But Apple may finally be doing something about that.
According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple plans to release a brand-new MacBook model that’s designed for the low-cost market. The laptop will not use an M-series chip, but an A18 Pro, the same chip found in the iPhone 16 Pro. Kuo believes it will have a 13-inch display and come in blue, pink, silver, and yellow.
Kuo claims that the new laptop will become available either at the end of this year or the beginning of 2026. Apple has established late fall as the timeframe for the MacBook Pro releases, and the company is expected to update...

Apple has released the first beta of iOS 18.6. With all the new features and attention on iOS 26, this release is likely to be simply a bugfix and compatibility update. As such, 9to5Mac noticed the following string in the code:

Apple Plans First Sub-$999 MacBook Using iPhone Chip...
Apple plans to release a cheaper MacBook powered by the A18 Pro chip used in the iPhone 16 Pro line, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The laptop will be priced below $999 -- first time for a MacBook Air -- and go into production in late 2025 or early 2026 on the new laptop, the analyst noted.
The device will feature the same 13-inch screen as the current MacBook Air, with the chip representing the primary difference between models. The A18 Pro chip delivers single-core performance around 3,500 on Geekbench, trailing the M4 chip only slightly, though multicore performance lags significantly at approximately 8,780 versus 15,000 for the M4. The A18's multicore performance matches the original 2020 M1 chip.

Apple might shift the logo lower on the iPhone 17...
Macworld
Apple is expected to introduce noticeable changes to the iPhone this fall, especially with the Pro models. For the first time, the camera won’t be confined to a square in the upper-left corner but will now stretch across the entire back of the device with the flash at the far right.
For a company obsessed with symmetry and balance, that change will force another adjustment that’s both visual and practical. According to leaker Majin Bu, Apple will reposition the Apple logo that’s long been centered on the back of the iPhone, about an inch lower on the back of the Pro models.

Verizon denies that a database offered for sale on a public forum contains real customer records, describing it as old data not connected to the company or its users.
Verizon denies data breach
A report by cybersecurity researchers at SafetyDetectives found a forum post advertising a database labeled "Verizon USA" with over 61 million records. The listing claimed the data was 3.1 gigabytes in CSV or JSON format and included sample screenshots of personal information fields.
Verizon told TechRadar it reviewed the postings and dismissed the data as old information recycled from forums. The company insists it has no link to its systems or customers and rejects any claim of a new breach....

The display supply chain for iPhones has been dominated by Samsung Display and LG Display, with BOE being a much smaller supplier in comparison. However, BOE really wants to be a big player, and has expanded its production capacity in the hope that Apple will use it.
According to the China Display Trend Report from UBI Research, seen by ZDNet Korea on Friday, BOE has managed to construct an annual production capacity for 100 million OLED panels for iPhones.

Apple praised for ‘noticeable’ fixes to iOS 26’s...
Macworld
As we keep warning prospective testers, Apple’s software betas are prone to bugs. Until a big software update is pushed live to the general public—and sometimes even beyond that point—it should be regarded as unfinished, flawed, and liable to go wrong in all sorts of unexpected ways.
This particularly applies to a first developer beta, the most speculative and the least finished of an update’s run; the one that has been subject to precisely zero testing in the real world outside Apple’s labs. And so the first dev betas of iOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26 and so on, which became available on the first day of WWDC 2025 earlier this month, were a risky proposition. And the second betas, which landed last week, were eagerly awaited. And...

What can we expect from Apple’s rumored new 2026...
Analyst Ming–Chi Kuo has suggested that Apple plans to launch an all–new MacBook next year, powered by an iPhone processor. Specifically, he expects it to have the A18 Pro chip which currently powers the iPhone 16 Pro line–up.
While there’s no word on pricing, the only way the report makes sense is if Apple is targeting an even lower price than the $999 starting–point of the current MacBook Air. Indeed, if you factor in on that, then it would have to be significantly cheaper. But there may be a more cynical possibility …

How to use Time Machine to back up a Mac
Macworld
Imagine the worst. Losing irreplaceable photos because your Mac’s drive failed? Accidentally deleting your dissertation? You might think it will never happen to you, but all it takes is a glass of water falling onto your MacBook and you could lose everything.
But at least if you’ve got a backup, the financial outlay of getting a new Mac will be made less traumatic by the fact that you can recover everything from your old one. Luckily Apple makes backing up your Mac really easy, so there really is no excuse not to do it.
We have lots of general advice about the importance of backing up your Mac in a separate article, but in this article we’re going to focus on one method in particular: Time Machine.
Other apps can back up a Mac: take a look at our recommendations of the...

Apple Music's ten years, billions of dollars in...
On June 30, 2015, Apple launched Apple Music, the service that has brought music pleasure to millions — and cost Apple billions in fines — plus it included a social media feature no one wanted.
It's fine to be nostalgic for red blobs.
If you joined Apple Music when it first launched and have stayed with it since, you have probably paid out at least $1,198.80. The price has gone up over the years, plus there are more expensive tiers with a family plan, cheaper ones with the student offering, and Apple Music is also part of the Apple One bundle, but you've been paying something for up to a decade.
What won't have happened, though, is that you'...

Apple Vision Pro with M5 may arrive before the end...
According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple has two new Apple Vision Pro headsets in development, with the M5 version expected to arrive perhaps by the end of 2025.
Multiple models and new designs of the Apple Vision Pro are said to be coming
Of all the rumors concerning future versions of the Apple Vision Pro, one of the most recent was that a lighter version would be released in early 2026. Ming-Chi Kuo now disagree with that, and chiefly claims there will be no new headsets at all in 2026 — and then a small raft of them starting in 2027.
In his blog post on the topic, Kuo states that five — including...

With visionOS 26, the wonder of Apple’s AR is...
Macworld
I have long complained that, for all its impressive hardware and software technology, the Apple Vision Pro is thus far a failure mostly because Apple doesn’t understand AR. Or Spatial Computing, or whatever it wants to call it.
That’s been the case for two years, since the Vision Pro arrived in February 2024 and the first major update in visionOS 2. But based on what Apple showed of visionOS 26 at WWDC, I feel like the company is finally starting to understand what a spatial computing experience should be.
Floating iPad window syndrome

Apple last week announced an insanely complex set of changes to its App Store terms in the EU, and hidden in the small–print is one sign that the company might be reducing its standard commission from 30% to 20%, and that it may make this change globally.
If so, it would be the first time the company has ever reduced its 30% cut for all developers, and might go a long way to tackling its legal battles with antitrust regulators around the world …

Macworld
In online publishing, as in Hollywood, nobody knows anything. Why did a dashed-off news story get vastly more traffic than a painstakingly honed opinion piece? Who can say. As flies to wanton boys are we to the algorithms; they kill us for their sport.
Last week’s mystifying success (not that I’m ungrateful, Google!) was a short article about a ringtone. In the first beta of iOS 26, testers discovered a new variant of the Reflection ringtone; in the second beta, this became a usable option. “ReflectionAlt1-EncoreRemix,” as it almost certainly won’t be called by the time iOS 26 launches to the public in the fall, is a definite improvement on the original, and I thought it was worth a quick story. What I did not expect was for it to go viral. To be clear: not complaining.
Then again, maybe...
