How to check a Mac’s free hard drive space

Macworld

In today’s era of multi-terabyte hard drives and online storage, many of us don’t keep as close an eye on our disk usage as we used to. Still, even the largest drives fill up eventually.

If you don’t know how to check your disk space use on your Mac, here’s where to look first.

And for long-term upkeep, there are plenty of powerful apps such as CleanMyMac ($34.95/£34.95) and DaisyDisk ($9.99/£9.99) which offer useful visualizations of your hard drive storage, while also allowing you to delete unnecessary files that hog too much space. Many of them also offer free trials — we’ve covered the ones worth downloading in round up of the...

Why is my Mac fan so loud? How to fix an overheating...

Macworld

If your Mac is beginning to sound like it has a jet engine spinning up inside it’s not just annoying, it may also be a sign that something is wrong. There could be an issue that is causing your Mac to overheat, or you might have a faulty fan. Here’s what to do if those fans keep whirring even if nothing appears to be wrong.

Why is my Mac’s fan so loud all of a sudden?

Having the fans going at full pelt isn’t a sign that things are necessarily wrong with your Mac, as the reason they’re installed in the first place is to cool down the insides of your computer by increasing the airflow around the components.

If you’re running computationally intensive applications such as HD video editors or high-end games, then your Mac will be working very hard, which in turn creates heat. The fan sensor will notice that the temperature is rising and immediately spin up the fans to help keep the system from cooking itself...

iPad Pro with M4 chip boasts impressive performance...

The M4 is looking like a very strong generation for Apple Silicon. According to leaked Geekbench scores likely posted by reviewers who already got their hands on the new iPad ahead of next week’s embargo, with the M4 chip scores about 3700 in single-core CPU benchmark, and around 14500 in multi-core.

That compares to ~3100 and ~12000 for the M3 MacBook Air, which Apple only just shipped in March. The new iPad Pro bests the Air by about 20%, an impressive generational jump, at least in these benchmark results.

Apple Will Revamp Siri To Catch Up To Its Chatbot...

An anonymous reader quotes a report from the New York Times: Apple's top software executives decided early last year that Siri, the company's virtual assistant, needed a brain transplant. The decision came after the executives Craig Federighi and John Giannandrea spent weeks testing OpenAI's new chatbot, ChatGPT. The product's use of generative artificial intelligence, which can write poetry, create computer code and answer complex questions, made Siri look antiquated, said two people familiar with the company's work, who didn't have permission to speak publicly. Introduced in 2011 as the original virtual assistant in every iPhone, Siri had been limited for years to individual requests and had never been able to follow a conversation. It often misunderstood questions. ChatGPT, on the other hand, knew that if someone asked for the weather in San Francisco and then said, "What about New York?" that user wanted another forecast.

The realization that new technology had...

Quick show of hands: How many of you have gotten stuck in a multi-person iMessage session that caused your phone to go “buzz” every five seconds?

Steps to Leave iMessage Group Chat on iPhone

  1. Open the Messages app.
  2. Tap the group conversation you want to leave.

How to call someone who blocked your number on iPhone

It’s possible to call someone even if they’ve blocked your number on their iPhone, because the iOS blocking feature relies on your caller ID being visible… and you can hide that fairly easily. Whether it’s advisable, ethical or even legal to do so is another matter.

Note: The iOS feature Silence Unknown Callers makes it so that the method discussed here probably won’t work. If the person you are calling has turned on this feature and your number is not in their Contacts then their phone will not ring. Read about...

Apple Might Bring AI Transcription To Voice Memos...

Apple's plans for AI on the iPhone could bring real-time transcription to its Voice Memos and Notes apps, according to a report from AppleInsider. The Verge: The new feature is expected to arrive with iOS 18 and will reportedly let you see a running transcription of your audio recordings in either app. While Notes currently doesn't let you record audio, a separate rumor from AppleInsider suggests Apple plans on adding this capability in iOS 18 as well. Audio transcription in either app sounds especially handy for students or journalists, who can save time transcribing a lengthy lecture or interview. It should also be helpful for anyone who just wants to take a quick look at their Voice Memos without having to listen to their recordings. As for Notes, Apple reportedly plans to go beyond transcriptions by adding AI-powered summaries.

iOS 18: Voice Memos, Notes to get auto-transcription...

Macworld

Every year, Apple announces the new version of iOS at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June. It then enters a beta testing period (first for developers only, then for the public) before being released in September, around the time the new iPhones go on sale.

We don’t expect the process or timeline to change this year, but that’s about the only thing we can count on being the same as years past. When it comes to iOS 18 itself—its features and changes—the rumors and leaks point to what might be one of the most consequential iPhone software updates in years.

What follows is a summary of rumors and leaks, but bear in mind that the final product may not quite resemble what you read here. Information about upcoming Apple products is often unreliable, and even when it’s accurate, plans change. That said, this is what we think we know so far.

Mophie Juice Pack for iPhone 15 review

Macworld

At a glanceExpert's Rating
Pros

  • Internal battery
  • Protective case
  • More efficient than a wireless power bank
  • Slimmer than rival battery cases

Cons

  • Battery offers less power than rivals

Our Verdict

The Mophie Juice Pack battery case provides 50% back-up power and protection for the iPhone 15. The internal 2,400mAh battery is one of the lowest-capacity options but the benefit of this is a much-reduced hump at the back of the slim case, in comparison to bulkier 5000mAh capacity battery cases.

After a long process of YouTube video downloading, it will be quite annoying to see a warning that the downloaded file format is not compatible with your Mac computer. When encountering this situation, you always need to download YouTube videos directly in a supported format.

When you download videos from YouTube, you will find that the suffix of the video file is not the common MOV, MKV, or MP4, which is quite annoying if you want to open it on a new Mac computer. That’s because YouTube will recode the video file to avoid users downloading the original MP4 file out of copyright consideration. But it’s legal for you to try a converter and convert YouTube videos to MP4 on Mac computers.

Apple Apologizes For Tone-Deaf Ad That Crushed Human...

Apple has apologized for its tone-deaf "Crush!" ad that sparked a furious backlash with artists, musicians and other creators. AdAge reports that Apple said the video "missed the mark" and has scrapped plans to run the cutesy-turned-cringey commercial on TV. From a report: It's clear that Apple intended for the ad to serve as a metaphor for all the myriad creative tools one has when they throw down $1,000 or more for a new iPad Pro. Run during Tuesday's event, the video shows a series of musical instruments and other tools for human expression, including a guitar, drums, trumpet, amplifiers, record player, TV and much more. "All I Ever Need Is You" by Sonny & Cher soundtracks the clip.

Soon, it's revealed that the objects are all sitting on an industrial crusher, which descends upon the scattered creative instruments, exploding in plumes of satisfyingly colorful smoke. But when the crusher pulls back up, we see that everything was transformed into a shiny new iPad Pro...

The Los Angeles Unified School District's failed iPad deployment was botched early on, according to a review by the US Education Department. Hands On: PhotoWatermark (OS X)

It's a different world. You might be the sort who would never take photo from a website and use it in your own book, but today if an image is online, it's as if the world sees it as fair game. Maybe that's a peek into our base immorality and the ultimate cataclysmic self-destruction of humanity, or maybe it's just that cut and paste is easy. Whatever it is, though, it's happening and you cannot stop it – not even with an application like this: but if PhotoWatermark can't prevent the copying of images, it can help photographers and artists considerably by adding identifying text to your image...

Multiple reports point to record-breaking Apple...

While the idea that Apple probably had another record-breaking holiday quarter (what the company calls fiscal 2015 Q1) is unsurprising to all but selected pundits, a spate of reports released on Monday may be painting a general portrait of not just significant improvement, but more importantly growth in key areas of importance both to investors and analysis as well as to the health of the company. Sales of Macs look to be way up, iOS devices are selling much better in a key foreign market, and Apple's suppliers are flourishing -- all signs that point to better-than-expected quarter....

HomeKit requires Apple TV hub for remote Siri...

People wanting to control HomeKit-enabled devices remotely through Apple's Siri must have an Apple TV at home to serve as a hub, according to Verge sources, including two launch partners and a person said to be "close to HomeKit's development." Siri controls will always work while an iPhone or iPad is on the same network as a HomeKit device, but until now it wasn't fully clear how remote operation might work. The Apple TV must also be a third-generation model running at least v7.0 firmware or newer. Notably, remote operation without Siri -- using the vendor app for a HomeKit product directly -...
