This is how long Macs and MacBooks last

Macworld

Macs have a high price so it’s understandable that many Mac users will want to put off replacing them for as long as they can. But just how long should you expect a Mac to last?

You may also be considering buying a secondhand Mac and wondering how old is too old? For example, is that 2017 MacBook Pro for $300/£300 a good deal, or would you be better off spending a bit more on a newer model?

One factor to consider is the age at which most Macs start to experience issues, such as random shutdowns and degraded batteries that no longer hold their charge. Unfortunately, at one point repairing your Mac or MacBook will no longer be a viable option and you will need to look for a replacement.

Another issue with aging Macs is that the software you need may not run on it. You may also find that Apple no longer supports the operating system software that runs on that Mac – which could leave you open to malware and...

Apple Watch Series 10 review: Ultra inspired,...

For the last week, I’ve been testing the new Apple Watch — mostly by sleeping. That’s because Apple Watch Series 10 is capable of detecting signs of sleep apnea.

I’ll need a few more weeks of sleep before possible sleep apnea can be flagged. In the meantime, there’s plenty to admire in the waking hours of the day.

Apple Watch Series 10 has a larger screen and a thinner design. It also gains new tricks like always displaying seconds and speaker media playback.

Of course, the new hardware includes all the Apple Watch features introduced in recent years. These include Crash Detection, the double tap gesture, and better performance just to name a few.

Best Apple Watch deals this month

Macworld

The Apple Watch is the best smartwatch on the market for many, offering a high-quality smartwatch experience, but it’s not cheap—starting at $399/£399 for the Apple Watch Series 10. However, you don’t have to pay full price for an Apple Watch. Right now resellers are offering some fantastic deals on the Apple Watch.

The deals are likely to get even better as resellers look to clear out stock of older watch models that Apple has stopped selling since introducing the latest models at its September iPhone event. If it doesn’t have to be the latest Apple Watch, you could see some good savings by plumping for the Series 9 or another discontinued model. Another way to save money is to find a deal that bundles an Apple Watch with another device...

macOS Sequoia backs five USB-C port Mac mini rumors

Rumors about the next Mac mini are continuing to flow, with another backing up previous claims that the new model will have five USB-C ports.

The existing Mac mini design
The Mac mini has often been rumored to receive a design overhaul, making it an even smaller package. This calls for a rethink of what ports are included, which may ultimately offer more connectivity options for users.

Examination of code changes in Apple software included a curious line, defining a specific model of Mac. The text string reads: "Apple Silicon Mac mini (5 port)."

The iPhone 16 is doomed and it’s all Apple...

Macworld

It is now about 15 minutes after iPhone preordering opened and, yes, the Macalope believes we can say categorically that the iPhone 16 line is an abject failure.

Sad. Surely it will be pulled from the market soon.

This might seem early but it is not the earliest an Apple product has been declared troubled by poor sales. In recent memory, the prize goes to the Vision Pro, which was reported to have production cuts in the summer before it was released. Not only that, these “drastic” production cuts were reported to be to 400,000 units. Nine months later, after the Vision Pro’s release, another outfit reported Apple was undertaking “unfavorable” production cuts to… 400,000 units.

Yes, the Vision Pro’s production figures were cut twice to the same number. Honestly, the Macalope’s not sure how you top that....

Apart from the much-ballyhooed (and delayed) Apple Intelligence, a big change to home screen customization and app icon placement is one of iOS 18’s flagship features, alongside an overhauled Control Center.

With the public launch of iOS 18 this week, we’ll be delving into those flagship features one by one, and I’m starting with the home screen because I have often criticized the iPhone’s home screen experience in the past. iOS 18 promises the biggest update to home screen customization since, well, ever.

Let’s walk through how to use the new features, explore how they work, and try to answer the most important question: does the iPhone finally offer the kind of...

Compressing folders on an iPad is a quick and easy way to optimize storage, improve file sharing, and organize your digital life. Here's how.

Files app
Compressing folders on an iPad can be useful for two main reasons — optimizing storage and making it easier to handle multiple files. When you compress a folder, you reduce its size in some cases, but not always.

For example, files like JPEGs or other formats that are already compressed won't shrink much further. However, the real benefit of compression is in bundling multiple files into one.

The future of inter-OS mobile messaging is here, it's just unevenly distributed.

With iOS 18, Apple has made it possible for non-Apple phones to message with iPhones through Rich Communication Services (RCS). This grants upgrades from standard SMS text messages, like read receipts, easier and higher-quality media sending, typing indicators, and emoji/response compatibility. More than that, it allows for messaging while on Wi-Fi without cellular services and makes group messages far less painful to navigate and leave. Notably, RCS messages between iPhones and non-iPhones...

iOS 18: How to fully customize your iPhone’s Home...

Macworld

Henry Ford is frequently quoted as saying his Model T was available in “Any color the customer wants, as long as it’s black.” Apple has often been accused of taking this approach to its products, with the original iPhone only available in one finish. Over the years, of course, iPhone color choices would expand… to white, then adding silver, gold, and eventually all sorts of shades.

The iOS experience has followed a similar route, at first offering almost no way to customize your phone other than to reorder the app icons, but eventually allowing wallpapers, folders, widgets, lock screen images, and more.

The iPhone has always had far fewer customization options than Android phones, and that’s still true today, but Apple is starting to really embrace personalization. The widgets and app library of iOS 14 were a big step forward. Custom lock screens gave us another big leap in iOS 16. And with...

Apple's new tvOS 18 has exited beta, and arrived for all users. Here are many of the new features contained within.

2022 Apple TV 4K hardware
While it's typically true that tvOS doesn't get the same robust yearly updates as iOS or macOS, Apple has brought big changes to its set-top box for the second year in a row.

macOS Sequoia review: the first macOS with more...

Apple's macOS Sequoia is chiefly a tale of two halves, with all of the better improvements coming later. But what's here now is good, sometimes even very good, but it definitely doesn't feel like the full picture.

Apple's macOS Sequoia with iPhone Mirroring
Every year Apple brings out a new macOS and it tends to follow a similar pattern. At first you notice some visual differences and some small improvements, but in those first hours of use you're not sure it was worth the upgrade for anything other than security reasons.

Shortly after those few hours, though, there is a cumulative effect where all of the little changes and benefits become at least subconsciously apparent. It's subconscious because you only truly notice when you try to go back to last year's macOS.

macOS Sequoia arrives with the promise of Apple...

After being unveiled at WWDC 2024 and then working its way through rounds of beta versions, macOS Sequoia has now been officially released. It is the new current version and all Macs sold from today onwards will have it preinstalled.

Apple has released macOS Sequoia
That's the same as happens every year, but macOS Sequoia has a difference — and it's called Apple Intelligence. When historians look back at significant macOS releases, this is going to be one of them because of Apple Intelligence.

But it isn't here yet.

iPadOS 18 review: making iPad better for everyone...

Depending on who you ask, iPadOS 18 is an excellent update that maintains parity with iOS 18, or it's a tragedy that doesn't address pro users' needs. The truth is complicated.

iPadOS 18 review
Apple introduced the iPad Pro with M4 weeks ahead of WWDC, leaving users wondering if that signaled big changes were coming in iPadOS 18. As expected, that wasn't the case since Apple provided very little in terms of new exclusive features for the tablet OS.

When I reviewed the 13-inch iPad Pro, I shared some of my quibbles with iPadOS and how it...

iPadOS 18 arrives with Smart Script and Calculator

Everyone will have to wait a little longer for Apple Intelligence on iPad, but for now, iPadOS 18 has launched with the long-awaited calculator app and new Smart Script handwriting feature.

iPadOS 18 is here with Smart Script and Calculator
Apple didn't have much to say about iPadOS 18 during WWDC because a significant portion of new features were either inherited from iOS 18 or Apple Intelligence. Even then, Apple's AI features won't be available on iPad until iPadOS 18.1 is released to the public.

So, if you focus on what's...

Apple releases iOS 18, but without Apple Intelligence

Apple has finally released iOS 18 to the public, introducing many changes to the interface, but not Apple Intelligence.

You can now install iOS 18 to your iPhone
Following its June WWDC introduction and months of beta testing, iPhone owners can finally update their devices to iOS 18. Installable via the usual software update process, the new operating system can be downloaded to devices around the world.

However, while users will expect to try out the headline feature of Apple Intelligence, it won't be available at first. Beta testers have been trying out some of the functions, which the public should be able to...

macOS 15 Sequoia: The Ars Technica review

Enlarge (credit: Apple)

The macOS 15 Sequoia update will inevitably be known as "the AI one" in retrospect, introducing, as it does, the first wave of "Apple Intelligence" features.

That's funny because none of that stuff is actually ready for the 15.0 release that's coming out today. A lot of it is coming "later this fall" in the 15.1 update, which Apple has been testing entirely separately from the 15.0 betas for weeks now. Some of it won't be ready until after that—rumors say image generation won't be ready until...

Apple Charging 20% More To Replace Batteries in...

Apple has increased its out-of-warranty battery replacement fee for iPhone 16 Pro models. From a report: Apple Stores can replace the battery inside an iPhone 16 Pro or iPhone 16 Pro Max for $119 in the U.S., which is up from $99 for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. This is a 20% increase to the fee, which includes the cost of a new battery and service by an Apple Store. The fee may vary at third-party Apple Authorized Service Providers. The fee remains $99 for the standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. Customers with AppleCare+ can still get an iPhone 16 Pro battery replaced for free, but only if the battery retains less than 80% of its original capacity.

Apple says all four iPhone 16 models are equipped with larger batteries, and all of the devices received an internal redesign for improved heat dissipation, according to the company. A metal enclosure was rumored for at least some iPhone 16 batteries, but we are still waiting for teardowns to get a proper look...

iPhone 16 Pro Demand Has Been Lower Than Expected,...

Ming-Chi Kuo, a high-profile and reliable Apple analyst, says the demand for the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max has been "lower than expected" since the devices became available to pre-order in the U.S. and dozens of other countries on Friday. From a report: Kuo said his data is based on a "supply chain survey" and shipping estimates listed on Apple's online store. Kuo estimated that sales of all four iPhone 16 models reached about 37 million units in the first weekend after Apple began accepting pre-orders, which is down nearly 13% compared to first-weekend sales of the iPhone 15 series last year. The analyst said a key factor for the decline is the lower demand for the Pro models, with first-weekend sales of the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max estimated to be down 27% and 16%, respectively, compared to iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max sales during the equivalent period last year.

'I Don't Get Why Apple's Multitrack...

Apple unveiled a multitrack recording feature for Voice Memos at its recent iPhone event, exclusive to the iPhone 16 Pro. The feature allows users to layer vocals over guitar tracks without headphones, utilizing advanced microphone technology and machine learning algorithms to reduce ambient noise.

Engadget argues the feature's exclusivity to the new $1,000+ model is unnecessary, given modern smartphones' processing power far exceeds that of early digital audio workstations. They contend that basic multitrack recording functionality could be implemented on older iPhone models. Apple's decision to limit this feature contradicts its inclusion of GarageBand on all iPhones and the availability of Audio Mix on base iPhone 16 models, which offers similar noise reduction capabilities. The story adds: Why is this particular feature walled behind the iPhone 16 Pro? It's a simple multitrack recording function. From the ad, it looks like the app can't even layer more than two tracks...

Apple asked a court Friday to dismiss its three-year-old hacking lawsuit against spyware pioneer NSO Group, arguing that it might never be able to get the most critical files about NSO's Pegasus surveillance tool and that its own disclosures could aid NSO and its increasing number of rivals. From a report: A redacted version of the filing in San Francisco federal court cited a July article in the Guardian, which reported that Israeli officials had taken files from NSO's headquarters. The newspaper said the officials asked an Israeli court to keep the action secret even from those involved in an earlier, still pending hacking suit against NSO filed by Meta's WhatsApp. Israeli ministry of justice communications that were hacked showed that officials were concerned about sensitive information reaching Americans, the newspaper said.

"While Apple takes no position on the truth or falsity of the Guardian Story described above, its existence presents cause for concern about the...
