Google, Apple Drive 'Black Box' IP...
App developers Musi and Sarafan Mobile have sued Apple and Google in California federal court over app removals they claim were unjustified, highlighting tensions over the tech giants' intellectual property enforcement policies. Musi's music-streaming app was removed after YouTube complained about interface infringement, while Sarafan's "Reely" app was taken down following Instagram's claims about logo similarity.
Both developers say the platforms breached their agreements by removing apps without sufficient evidence. The lawsuits underscore broader concerns about Apple and Google's dominance in app distribution. Their private IP dispute systems operate outside traditional legal frameworks, with platforms making unilateral decisions that can effectively shut down businesses, according to University of New Hampshire law professor Peter Karol. Fans of Pixelmator's apps, which are notably one-time purchases, unlike Adobe's tools, may be hoping that those "exciting updates" do not include the sublimation of Pixelmator into an Apple product at some future time, while the Pixelmator apps disappear.

The current dispute is over Giuliani’s deeply suspicious claim that he gave the rings to his nitwit son Andrew in 2018, so they’re no longer his for the court to take.
But how did Rudy get them in the first place? It’s generally reported that these rings were gifts from the Yankees, given to him, while mayor of New York, after each win. Here’s a report today from the AP that just glosses over...

Consider the Plight of the VC-Backed Privacy Burglars
Kevin Roose wrote a column for The New York Times last week under the headline “Did Apple Just Kill Social Apps?”, about which Jason Snell quipped, “It’s rare that a story is worse than its provocative headline, but this one manages it.” The gist of it is Roose positing that Apple’s new fine-grained controls over contact-sharing in iOS 18 are somehow controversial. Roose himself writes:

is that an app can trigger a message called a “data access
prompt,” asking for access to a user’s contacts.
If the user agreed, the app developer got a list of all the
contacts in that user’s address book, along with other...

Marsh Supermarkets and inMarket have announced a new iBeacon platform, the first to emphasize the Apple Watch. Google's Android Auto is notably absent, but since the 2016 Volt isn't due to go on sale until mid-2015, there may be time to implement it....

HomeKit requires Apple TV hub for remote Siri...
People wanting to control HomeKit-enabled devices remotely through Apple's Siri must have an Apple TV at home to serve as a hub, according to Verge sources, including two launch partners and a person said to be "close to HomeKit's development." Siri controls will always work while an iPhone or iPad is on the same network as a HomeKit device, but until now it wasn't fully clear how remote operation might work. The Apple TV must also be a third-generation model running at least v7.0 firmware or newer. Notably, remote operation without Siri -- using the vendor app for a HomeKit product directly -...
