Trying Ray-Ban Meta glasses reinforces my belief in...

I’m on record as saying that I think Vision Pro is mostly a stepping-stone toward an eventual Apple Glasses product, and that I think those are still years away yet.

I feel like current glasses tech is giving us these partial peeks into that future. Viture One XR glasses provide one potential take, and the Ray-Ban Meta glasses another – and perhaps suggesting the future may be closer than I thought …

M4 already? Here’s why Apple is abandoning the M3...

One of the biggest surprises from Apple’s ‘Let loose’ event was the arrival of a new M4 chip in the iPad Pro. It may not have been quite as surprising as Apple originally hoped, but heading into the event there was still a lot of doubt and no real consensus on what chip would power the new iPad Pro.

Yet Apple made the bold move of shipping the very first M4 chip in the iPad. Leaving us all to wonder: why? And what exactly is wrong with the M3 line?

Mophie Juice Pack for iPhone 15 review

Macworld

At a glanceExpert's Rating
Pros

  • Internal battery
  • Protective case
  • More efficient than a wireless power bank
  • Slimmer than rival battery cases

Cons

  • Battery offers less power than rivals
  • More expensive than rivals

Our Verdict

The Mophie Juice Pack battery case provides 50% back-up power and protection for the iPhone 15. The internal 2,400mAh battery is one of the lowest-capacity options but the benefit of this is a much-reduced hump at the back of the slim case, in comparison to bulkier 5000mAh capacity battery cases.

While an expensive, bulky Vision Pro headset undoubtedly has its place for some, Apple’s longer-term goal is believed to be a product dubbed Apple Glasses: bringing AR capabilities into something with a similar form-factor and weight to conventional eyeglasses or sunglasses.

Squeezing that much tech into a much smaller device is, of course, a huge challenge – but researchers at Stanford’s Computational Imaging Lab may have come up with at least part of the solution …

Macworld

After a long process of YouTube video downloading, it will be quite annoying to see a warning that the downloaded file format is not compatible with your Mac computer. When encountering this situation, you always need to download YouTube videos directly in a supported format.

When you download videos from YouTube, you will find that the suffix of the video file is not the common MOV, MKV, or MP4, which is quite annoying if you want to open it on a new Mac computer. That’s because YouTube will recode the video file to avoid users downloading the original MP4 file out of copyright consideration. But it’s legal for you to try a converter and convert YouTube videos to MP4 on Mac computers.

Pros

  • Excellent Apple & Android support
  • Great battery life
  • USB-C and 3.5mm audio support

Cons

Our Verdict

It’s been too long since Beats updated its more affordable on-ear Solo headphones, and while there are lots of improvements in this version it feels like a missed opportunity to really push the category forward. Apple Apologizes For Tone-Deaf Ad That Crushed Human...

Apple has apologized for its tone-deaf "Crush!" ad that sparked a furious backlash with artists, musicians and other creators. AdAge reports that Apple said the video "missed the mark" and has scrapped plans to run the cutesy-turned-cringey commercial on TV. From a report: It's clear that Apple intended for the ad to serve as a metaphor for all the myriad creative tools one has when they throw down $1,000 or more for a new iPad Pro. Run during Tuesday's event, the video shows a series of musical instruments and other tools for human expression, including a guitar, drums, trumpet, amplifiers, record player, TV and much more. "All I Ever Need Is You" by Sonny & Cher soundtracks the clip.

Soon, it's revealed that the objects are all sitting on an industrial crusher, which descends upon the scattered creative instruments, exploding in plumes of satisfyingly colorful smoke. But when the crusher pulls back up, we see that everything was transformed into a shiny new iPad Pro...

How to reset the NVRAM, PRAM, and SMC on any Mac

Macworld

When your Mac starts acting up, you’ll probably run through some common troubleshooting procedures, such as restarting it, running Disk Utility, and perhaps performing a Safe Boot. Your repair repertoire should also include a couple of additional procedures that can occasionally eliminate otherwise inscrutable problems—zapping the NVRAM and resetting the SMC.

The procedures here apply to Intel-based Macs. M-Series Macs don’t have a procedure for zapping the NVRAM, and they don’t have an SMC. For M1-Series Macs, try shutting down the computer, waiting for several seconds, and then boot it.

What is PRAM?

Back in the day, the standard list of quick fixes for random Mac ailments always included clearing the PRAM. The P in PRAM stood for “parameter” (the RAM was just RAM—random access memory), and it referred to a small amount of special, battery-backed memory in every Mac that stored information the computer...

Whatever happened to the paperless office?

Of all technology’s promised benefits, the paperless office has proved to be one of the most elusive. By now we were supposed to have converted to completely digital workflows, consuming fewer environmental resources and reducing waste, easing collaboration with remote colleagues, and minimizing the weight of documents we have to send to work contacts or carry around with us.

Look around the next time you’re at work or in your home office and you will probably concede that the paperless office hasn’t fully materialized. Despite the advantages of going digital, workers are reluctant to leave paper behind completely. Why is this? Digital documents can be more eye-straining to read, harder to properly organize, and painful to sign; depending on the format (which is another headache!), they can also be difficult to edit, and the ease with which they can be shared over email...

Citing a memo distributed to Apple Store employees, 9to5Mac reports that the new iPad Pro and iPad Air lineups will not include Apple stickers in the box -- "a key piece of memorabilia" that dates back as far as 1977's Apple II, notes Ars Technica. While the company says that this is part of its environmental goals to completely remove plastic from its packaging, it begs the question: is the era of stickers in Apple boxes coming to an end? 9to5Mac reports: The M3 MacBook Air that launched in March includes stickers in the box, but Apple Vision Pro (which launched in February) does not. Will the iPhone 16 include stickers in the box? Only time will tell. Ars' Andrew Cunningham writes about the origins of the Apple stickers: Apple has included stickers with its products at least as far back as the Apple II in 1977 when the stickers still said "Apple Computer" on them in the company's then-favored Motter Tektura typeface (I couldn't track down a vintage Apple II unboxing, but I did...

Apple To Power AI Tools With In-House Server Chips...

Apple will deliver some of its upcoming AI features this year via data centers equipped with its own in-house processors, part of a sweeping effort to infuse its devices with AI capabilities. The move is part of Apple's much-anticipated push into generative artificial intelligence -- the technology behind ChatGPT and other popular tools. With the fourth model, the Apple Pencil strategy...

Macworld

When Steve Jobs returned to Apple in 1996 one of the first things he did was drastically streamline the company’s product portfolio. Slashing over 70 percent of the company’s products, everything was focused on a simple 2×2 grid: pro/consumer on one axis, desktop/portable on the other. Among other things, he argued that if consumers don’t know which product to buy, there are too many products.

Obviously, Apple is in a very different place today. It’s many times larger and competes in many more markets (both product markets and territorial markets). While it’s arguable that Apple makes too many products today, one could scarcely argue that it has too many Apple Pencils. There are four. Four!

InvenSense hit with lawsuit over concessions in...

A new lawsuit filed against gyroscope and accelerometer supplier for Apple, InvenSense, accuses the company of failing to tell investors about the concessions it made to secure a recent deal. "Instead of revealing the true condition of the company and its prospects, defendants hid those facts from investors and chose to issue strong guidance and paint a picture of a bright future with a new mega-customer," the complai...

Sales of Macs look to be way up, iOS devices are selling much better in a key foreign market, and Apple's suppliers are flourishing -- all signs that point to better-than-expected quarter....
