Apple, SpaceX, Microsoft return-to-office mandates...

A study analyzing Apple, Microsoft, and SpaceX suggests that return to office (RTO) mandates can lead to a higher rate of employees, especially senior-level ones, leaving the company, often to work at competitors.

The study (PDF), published this month by University of Chicago and University of Michigan researchers and reported by The Washington Post on Sunday, says:

In this paper, we provide causal evidence that RTO mandates...

M4 iPad Pro reviews praise what it looks like but...

Macworld

Just a week after Apple’s Let Loose event, the first reviews of Apple’s new flagship tablets have arrived. And as with all iPad Pros that came before, two things are true: The hardware is incredible, but the software is lacking.

Design

Writing at The Verge, David Pierce calls the M4 iPad Pro “a genuine achievement in tablet design” in the very first sentence. He remarks how the device “feels like a piece of glass in your hand” and it’s so thin that “the USB-C plug I use to charge the 13-inch Pro I’ve been testing is already thicker than the iPad itself.”

The best USB-C hubs for iPad

Macworld

Apple’s iPads now all use the universal USB-C connector port rather than Apple’s old Lightning connector. The M1/M2/M4 iPad Pro models use the even more capable but identical-looking (and compatible to USB-C) Thunderbolt connection (USB4).

What many people don’t realise is that the USB-C port is good for more than charging or plugging in wired earbuds. Apple’s tablets can also be used with other peripherals that transform it into an even more versatile computer. As such, iPad owners have a wide range of USB-C accessories available to them unless their older iPad still uses the Lightning connector.

Some of the USB-C hubs connect directly into the iPad. Others require a cable connection; some come with both, which helps when the iPad is in a protective case. We have also...

When did being able to read the room become a lost art?

The arc of backlash to Apple’s “Crush” ad was wild to observe. The Macalope’s first reaction to it was thinking it missed the mark as a metaphor. Destroying the creative arts to make an iPad was not the right way to get across the creative things you can do with an iPad, and many other, better metaphors could have been used. But he certainly didn’t think it’d be met with the staunch opposition it has, an opposition that ultimately led to the company apologizing and canceling plans to show the ad on TV.

Sure, Apple’s always had its detractors, a swath of people who are always happy to tell the company that whatever it’s doing, it’s doing it wrong. But this time the calls were coming from inside the house. Apple “crushed” creativity and one of...

ChatGPT Is Getting a Mac App

OpenAI has launched an official macOS app for ChatGPT, with a Windows version coming "later this year." "Both free and paid users will be able to access the new app, but it will only be available to ChatGPT Plus users starting today before a broader rollout in 'the coming weeks,'" reports The Verge. From the report: In the demo shown by OpenAI, users could open the ChatGPT desktop app in a small window, alongside another program. They asked ChatGPT questions about what's on their screen -- whether by typing or saying it. ChatGPT could then respond based on what it "sees." OpenAI says users can ask ChatGPT a question by using the Option + Space keyboard shortcut, as well as take and discuss screenshots within the app. Further reading: OpenAI Launches New Free Model GPT-4o

OpenAI announces new Mac app and improved ChatGPT-4o...

Macworld

The AI race is in full swing, and OpenAI just fired its latest salvo with its “Spring Update” announcements. The most significant new part is a new model, ChatGPT-4o (the “o” stands for “omni”), which is faster and smarter with better multi-model capabilities, and importantly, available to all users, not just those who subscribe.

In addition, there are new tools for developers, a new GPT Store to more easily find customized GPTs, and crucially, a new Mac app (a Windows app will come later this year).

ChatGPT-4o

The focus of GPT-4o seems to be on making it easier to use for more people, but it is still OpenAI’s most capable AI product yet. Benchmarks from the company show industry-leading performance on text evaluation, automatic speech recognition, visual understanding, and more. Voice generation is improved with a more natural sound, more emotion, and the ability to do things like sing, be...

The new iPad Pro is a technical marvel, with one of the best screens I’ve ever seen, performance that few other machines can touch, and a new, thinner design that no one expected.

It’s a prime example of Apple flexing its engineering and design muscles for all to see. Since it marks the company’s first foray into OLED beyond the iPhone and the first time a new M-series chip has debuted on something other than a Mac, it comes across as a tech demo for where the company is headed beyond just tablets.

Still, it remains unclear why most people would spend one, two, or even three thousand dollars on a tablet that, despite its amazing hardware, does less than a comparably priced laptop—or at least...

One exception came in late 2021 when ecobee added support for Siri in its SmartThermostat. Now, three years later, a second product has received Siri integration.

Apple and Google Finally Team Up to Protect Users from Unwanted Tracking

Tech giants Apple and Google have joined forces to combat unwanted tracking via Bluetooth devices. This collaboration has resulted in the creation of an industry-standard called “Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers.” This standard will let both iPhones and Android phones (version 6.0 and later) identify unknown tracking devices in their vicinity. The new system has an […]

MagSafe Monday: After a cracked and scratched iPhone...

Maybe it’s me, or maybe it’s the iPhone 15 Pro, but I finally cracked my first iPhone screen ever. I used my local Best Buy for the repair as they handle authorized Apple repairs. They did a fantastic job, and it was done within a few hours. A few weeks later, after a day of yard work, I noticed a small scratch on my screen. Ugh, right? Thankfully it wasn’t cracked, but I clearly cannot be trusted at this point. I decided to upgrade my iPhone case to one with a built in screen protector. I ended up with the .

Apple holds a Back to School promotion every year (now known as the Higher Education Offer to avoid confusion because it’s only open to students once they enter higher education, and the institutions and teachers, not school-age children). As part of the deal, Apple offers an incentive with purchases of qualifying Apple products.

Apple’s ‘Back to School’ deal runs in various locations around the world during the summer months. The deal usually ends about a month after the first university semester begins in that country.

Best Mac webcams

Macworld

During the coronavirus lockdowns millions of people around the world were reliant on video apps such as Zoom or Apple’s own FaceTime to chat with family and friends online. Lockdowns may be a thing of the past, but video calling still remains popular and is here to stay. And, of course, many of us are still working from home the majority of the time, continuing to use business-oriented apps such as Skype or Microsoft Teams to set up video calls with colleagues and clients.

Apart from the Mac mini, Mac Studio and Mac Pro, all Macs have one of Apple’s FaceTime cameras already built in, so you don’t necessarily need to buy a new webcam for video calls. However, the webcams on older Macs offer embarrassingly low resolution...

Apple loves to make its products thinner, even if no one asks for it. When Apple revealed the new iPad Pro it made its thinnest tablets ever–the 11- and 13-inch iPad Pro are 5.3 mm and 5.1 mm thick, respectively. But for longtime Apple users, proclamations about the slender profile bring back memories of Bendgate, which happened with the iPhone 6 Plus, the iPhone SE, and most importantly the 2018 iPad Pro.

Macworld

With WWDC 2024 less than a month away, we’re starting to get a good idea of what Apple has in mind as its big software announcements, namely iOS 18. We already knew that AI was likely to be a major theme of the event, but a new report offers specifics of what that will involve.

According to the generally well-informed leaker Mark Gurman (citing “people familiar with the matter”), Apple “has closed in on an agreement” with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT features to the iPhone as of the launch of iOS 18 this year. Crucially, that would mean the technology...

Mac security software adds another layer of protection to what Apple already provides, with features that can help to protect your identity, passwords, and financial details. These are the things that criminals are after, and they’ll often use cunning ways to extract them rather than spending time trying to break past Apple’s defenses in macOS.

Although some of the packages here are solely focused on macOS, others will also protect Android and Windows devices you might also own, and that makes the price of protection much cheaper per computer.

Good security software should warn you before you click on a dangerous website, or open a ‘phishing’ email with a dodgy attachment, which could trick you into handing over your bank details, passwords, or other sensitive information.

Welcome to our weekly Apple Breakfast column, which includes all the Apple news you missed last week in a handy bite-sized roundup. We call it Apple Breakfast because we think it goes great with a Monday morning cup of coffee or tea, but it’s cool if you want to give it a read during lunch or dinner hours too.

Simple is as simple does

One of the first things they teach you at tech journalist school is to put yourself in the shoes of the casual reader. I’m immersed in the world of Apple products on a daily basis, but many of those who visit Macworld stubbornly insist on having a life. And things that might seem obvious to me, and to Apple’s head-in-the-clouds hipster marketing team, are baffling to them.

It’s worrying for all concerned, then, when I’m the one finding Apple’s product range baffling. But that’s been the case with the iPad for years: between staggered launches, inconsistent naming...

It's really a wonderful product."

Q: What comes after it?
Altman: I don't know. I mean, that was what I was saying. It's so good, that to get beyond it, I think the bar is quite high.
Q: You've been working with Jony Ive on something, right?
Altman: We've been discussing ideas, but I don't — like, if I knew...
Altman said later he thought voice interaction "feels like a different way to use a computer."
But the conversation turned to Apple in another way. It happened in a larger conversation where Altman said OpenAI has "currently made the decision not to do music, and partly because exactly these questions of...

iPad cellular is a major advantage over Macs, still...

Every time a new iPad Pro is announced, Apple’s enthusiasm over how powerful its most advanced tablet is provokes a certain level of public cynicism. Not because Apple’s claims are disputed. But because for all the power the iPad Pro boasts, it still runs iPadOS. And for some, that automatically makes it inexorably less capable than a Mac.

But one significant area where the iPad has the undisputed upper hand on the Mac is in connectivity. You can’t get a Mac with cellular, but the iPad has offered cellular since its 2010 debut. And built-in cellular can prove a major advantage for someone who values having a truly portable computer.
