iPhone 17 vs iPhone 16 Pro: Similar displays,...

Apple truly hit it out of the park with the base iPhone 17, making it one of the companies best value iPhone models in quite some time. With how many incredible upgrades there are on iPhone 17, it actually makes a comparison to last year’s model more interesting than you’d expect.

Jef Raskin’s cul-de-sac and the quest for the humane...

Consider the cul-de-sac. It leads off the main street past buildings of might-have-been to a dead-end disconnected from the beaten path. Computing history, of course, is filled with such terminal diversions, most never to be fully realized, and many for good reason. Particularly when it comes to user interfaces and how humans interact with computers, a lot of wild ideas deserved the obscure burials they got.

But some deserved better. Nearly every aspiring interface designer believed the way we were forced to interact with computers was limiting and frustrating, but one man in particular felt the emphasis on design itself missed the forest for the trees. Rather than drowning in visual metaphors or arcane iconographies doomed to be as complex as the systems they represented, the way we deal and interact with computers should stress functionality first, simultaneously considering both what users need to do and the cognitive limits they have. It was no longer enough that an...

New iPhones use Apple N1 wireless chip—and we’ll...

Apple's most famous chips are the A- and M-series processors that power its iPhones, iPads, and Macs, but this year, its effort to build its own wireless chips is starting to bear fruit. Earlier this spring, the iPhone 16e included Apple's C1 modem, furthering Apple's ambitions to shed its dependence on Qualcomm, and today's iPhone Air brought a faster Apple C1X variant, plus something new: the Apple N1, a chip that provides Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread support for all of today's new iPhones.

Apple didn't dive deep into the capabilities of the N1, or why it had switched from using third-party suppliers (historically, Apple has mostly leaned on Broadcom for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth). However, the company's press releases say that it should make Continuity features like Personal Hotspot and AirDrop more reliable—these features use Bluetooth for initial communication and then...

Hands-on with Apple’s new iPhones: Beauty and the...

CUPERTINO, Calif.—We're a long way from the days when a new iPhone launch just meant one new phone. It shifted to "basically the same phone in two sizes" a decade or so ago, and then to a version of "one lineup of regular phones and one lineup of Pro phones" in 2017 when the iPhone 8 was introduced next to the iPhone X.

But thanks to Apple's newly introduced iPhone Air, the iPhone 17 lineup gives new phone buyers more choices and trade-offs than they've ever had before. Apple's phones are now available in a spectrum of sizes, weights, speeds, costs, and camera configurations. And while options are great to have, it also means you need to know more about which one to pick.

We've gone hands-on with all four of Apple's new phones, and while more extensive tire-kicking will be required, we can at least try to nail down exactly what kind of person each of these phones is for.

iPhone 17 Air is real—here’s what’s new in Apple’s...

An incoming new iPhone model called the iPhone Air has been one of the worst-kept secrets in tech lately, and now Apple has confirmed it at its annual iPhone reveal event.

The 6.5-inch iPhone 17 Air combines the CPU and GPU of an iPhone Pro with the camera system of a regular iPhone, all in an extra-thin design (5.6 mm), with a treated titanium frame that is likely to appeal to style-conscious users and some business consumers.

Like the iPhone 17, the iPhone 17 Air has a ProMotion display with a variable refresh rate up to 120 Hz—something that was reserved for only the Pro iPhones up until this year. The Air's display also has always-on functionality and claims 3,000 nits of peak brightness. It has Apple's new Ceramic Shield 2 protective coating on both the front and the back, which the company claims will make it more durable and anti-reflective.

iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26 Tahoe, and Apple’s other...

CUPERTINO, Calif.—If you’re buying one of the new iPhones or the other hardware that Apple announced today, your new devices will ship with Apple’s latest operating system updates already installed. But if you’re not looking to spend a bunch of money on Apple’s latest and greatest, the new updates will land on Apple’s other supported devices on September 15.

Apple is shifting to a year-based numbering system starting this year, wiping away the previous grab bag of all-over-the-place version numbers. No corner of Apple’s ecosystem is going untouched: we’re getting iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26 Tahoe, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, visionOS 26, and even version 26 of whatever Apple is calling the HomePod’s software these days, all on the same day.

The headliner across all of the updates is Apple’s new “Liquid Glass” UI overhaul, which adds glass-inspired transparency and translucency and bouncy animations throughout all of Apple’s software. Inspired in part by the way that UI...

Apple “started from scratch” to design all-new...

CUPERTINO, Calif.—Apple's basic iPhone 17 is the one most people will use, and the new iPhone Air will get attention for its thin design and novelty. But the iPhone Pro series is still the absolute best the company has to offer, and that continues to be true of the new iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max that Apple announced today.

The new phones start at $1,099 and $1,199 for the Pro and Pro Max, respectively, each with 256GB of storage. Preorders start this Friday, and the phones will be available on September 19.

While the best feature of the iPhone 17 is its screen, the screens are virtually the only thing not to be overhauled for the iPhone 17 Pro, though they do get the more scratch-resistant, anti-reflective Ceramic Shield 2 coating. The new designs have a new aluminum unibody enclosure, with a glass cutout on the back to allow for wireless charging and a huge new camera bump that Apple calls the "camera plateau," stretching all the way across the back.

The Apple Watch 11 is supposed to be able to alert users about "possible hypertension" by using data from an optical heart rate sensor "to analyze how a user’s blood vessels respond to the beats of the heart," per its announcement.

According to Apple's presentation, the smartwatch will look for chronic hypertension over 30-day periods. Apple's presentation noted that the Watch Series 11 won't be able to identify all hypertension, but the company said that it expects to notify over 1 million people with undiagnosed hypertension during the...

Apple introduces AirPods Pro 3 with live translation...

Apple's popular AirPods Pro in-ear headphones are getting a substantial upgrade. The new model, dubbed AirPods Pro 3, greatly improves active noise cancellation (ANC), performs live translations, and tracks your heart rate like a fitness wearable.

This will have to be subjected to third-party testing, but Apple made some intriguing claims about AirPods Pro 3's performance during its iPhone and Apple Watch announcement today. Namely, that they'll have twice the ANC performance as AirPods Pro 2 and four times as much as the original AirPods Pro.

Additionally, Apple claims that voices will sound "more natural" in Transparency, the mode meant to allow nearby sounds to be heard even while you have the earbuds in. Those who've used earlier iterations of Transparency will likely note that voices can sound a little bit filtered, so that could be a nice-to-have improvement.

All 54 lost clickwheel iPod games have now been...

Last year, we reported on the efforts of classic iPod fans to preserve playable copies of the downloadable clickwheel games that Apple sold for a brief period in the late '00s. The community was working to get around Apple's onerous FairPlay DRM by having people who still owned original copies of those (now unavailable) games sync their accounts to a single iTunes installation via a coordinated Virtual Machine. That "master library" would then be able to provide playable copies of those games to any number of iPods in perpetuity.

At the time, the community was still searching for iPod owners with syncable copies of the last few titles needed for their library. With...

What to expect (and not expect) from yet another...

Apple's next product event is happening on September 9, and while the company hasn't technically dropped any hints about what's coming, anyone with a working memory and a sense of object permanence can tell you that an Apple event in the month of September means next-generation iPhones.

Apple's flagship phones have changed in mostly subtle ways since 2022's iPhone 14 Pro added the Dynamic Island and 2023's refreshes switched from Lightning to USB-C. Chips get gradually faster, cameras get gradually better, but Apple hasn't done a seismic iPhone X-style rethinking of its phones since, well, 2017's iPhone X.

The rumor mill thinks that Apple is working on a foldable iPhone—and such a device would certainly benefit from years of investment in the iPad...

700-piece Lego G3 iMac design faces long-shot odds...

I don't usually get too excited about user-submitted designs on the Lego Ideas website, especially when those ideas would require negotiating a license with another company—user-generated designs need to reach 10,000 supporters before Lego considers them for production, two pretty high bars to clear even without factoring in some other brand's conditions and requests.

But I'm both intrigued and impressed by this Lego version of Apple's old Bondi Blue G3 iMac that has been making the rounds today. Submitted by a user named terauma, the 700-plus-piece set comes complete with keyboard, hockey-puck mouse, a classic Mac OS boot screen, and cathode ray tubes and circuit boards visible through the set's transparent blue casing (like the original iMac, it may cause controversy by excluding a floppy disk drive). The design has already reached 5,000 supporters, and it has 320 days left to...

Parallels Desktop 26 offers a lot to enterprise...

The new version of Mac virtual machine software Parallels Desktop, which is most often used to run Windows applications on modern Macs, has just arrived. Parallels Desktop 26 has a lot to offer to the enterprise, but for most end users, it's a pretty minor upgrade mainly meant to prepare for the upcoming launch of the next version of macOS.

(It's worth noting that the "26" for this release represents a new versioning scheme meant to map closely to how Apple is now labeling its own operating system releases.)

With this release, the Parallels teams touts built-in support for the upcoming major OS releases from Apple and Microsoft: macOS 26 Tahoe and Windows 11 25H2. That includes changes to make Parallels play nice with macOS 26's new background process restrictions, particularly for Coherence mode.

Apple set to unveil next-gen iPhones and other...

Apple is hosting its next product event on Tuesday, September 9, at 10 am Pacific and 1 pm Eastern, the company announced today. Though Apple's event announcements rarely indicate what the company plans to talk about, the company's September events for well over a decade have all revolved around the iPhone.

The event will be available to stream from YouTube or from Apple's events website.

Rumors about this year's iPhones point to a more significant redesign than in recent years, though Apple isn't (yet?) ready to jump into the world of foldable phones. In addition to new, wider camera areas that span the backs of the devices, the most reliable rumors suggest we'll be getting a new "iPhone Air" that prioritizes thinness and lightness. We're also expecting a standard iPhone 17, an iPhone 17 Pro, and an iPhone 17 Pro Max; the non-Pro Max version of the iPhone may be going away, following in the footsteps of the iPhone...

After a public outburst over Grok's App Store rankings, on Monday, Elon Musk followed through on his threat to sue Apple and OpenAI.

In Xcode 26, Apple shows first signs of offering...

The latest Xcode beta contains clear signs that Apple plans to bring Anthropic's Claude and Opus large language models into the integrated development environment (IDE), expanding on features already available using Apple's own models or OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Apple enthusiast publication 9to5Mac "found multiple references to built-in support for Anthropic accounts," including in the "Intelligence" menu, where users can currently log in to ChatGPT or enter an API key for higher message limits.

Apple introduced a suite of features meant to compete with GitHub Copilot in Xcode at WWDC24, but first focused on its own models and a more limited set of use cases. That expanded quite a bit at this year's developer conference, and users can converse about codebases, discuss changes, or ask for suggestions using ChatGPT. A FOIA request revealed the letters sent to Apple and big tech over the TikTok ban, and they claim the law wouldn't be enforced due to it interfering with the President's management of foreign affairs.

Lack of TikTok ban enforcement due to Article II interpretation
TikTok was banned originally due to the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act that was signed into law under the Biden administration, though it was brought about by President Trump's desire to ban the app. However, he changed his tune when he discovered his supporters used the platform, so he signed an executive order immediately after being sworn in that would...

Apple's Q3 tends to be quieter than the rest since holiday sales are long over and spring releases don't always drive the market, but 2025 has something the others didn't — Trump tariffs. Apple shared that it expected to take at least a $900 million hit to its bottom line if nothing changed from March.

Things did change, however, as the Trump administration agreed to back off its seemingly random "reciprocal" tariffs for 90 days as deals were worked...

Best NAS drives for Mac

Macworld

There are three types of storage you can use with your Mac. External storage devices like SSDs and hard drives can plug into your Mac and be used to back up your data or to extend your storage. There are also those little USB memory sticks you can use to store or transfer files, these days they can hold up to 2TB of files in your pocket.

These days cloud storage is another popular solution, as it offers a simple way to access your data from anywhere, collaborate with teams of people, and it extends the amount of storage available on your Mac. With the advent of home working meaning fewer people are confined to the office, lots are turning to cloud storage for collaboration, but there are downsides to this, not least the fact that typical cloud...

5 reasons to skip buying a new iPhone 17 this year

Macworld

Once upon a time, Apple used to make significant changes to the iPhone every couple of years. A new model (iPhone 4, 5, 6, etc) would launch with an overhauled look, followed by an S variant that boosted performance and smoothed out any imperfections.

That’s no longer the case. Primarily due to the iPhone’s maturity, iterative annual upgrades have become the norm. After all, there’s only so much it can improve year over year. And despite what you may have read about this year’s phones, the new lineup is looking to be more of the same, even with the introduction of a new Air model.

That’s why if you’re planning to get a new iPhone, you may want to wait for next year’s iPhone 18 series. Unlike the iPhone 17, 2026’s lineup is set to bring some of the biggest design and functionality upgrades in years, which could make the iPhone 17 feel decidedly ho-hum.

Something in the Air

Foxconn Mysteriously Tells Chinese Workers To Quit...

Apple's expansion in India has hit a snag as Foxconn has sent over 300 Chinese workers back to China, potentially reducing production efficiency just as mass manufacturing of the iPhone 17 begins. AppleInsider reports: It's not known why Foxconn has done this, nor is it clear whether workers have been laid off or redeployed to the company's facilities in China. The move, though, does follow Beijing officials reportedly working to prevent firms moving away from China. Those officials are said to have been verbally encouraging China's local governments and regulatory bodies to curb exports of equipment or technologies to India and Southeast Asia.

Overall, China has been making it harder for skilled labor to leave the country. It's not clear how any changes have specifically affected Chinese workers who had already left. What is clear is that Foxconn has used many experienced Chinese engineers as it attempts to rapidly expand in India. It's said, too, that Chinese managers have...

Reminders in iOS 26 has a few new smart features with Apple Intelligence, and a restrained visual upgrade over iOS 18. Here's how the two versions compare.

Reminders iOS 26 vs Reminders iOS 18 - A visual and smart upgrade
The Reminders app isn't really an app that people think about that can do with some improvements. What Apple has at the moment is already a pretty good tool for making lists and following through with them.

With the introduction of iOS 26 at WWDC, Apple made quite a few alterations to the app. While the general structure remains untouched, it has refreshed the appearance as well as made it much smarter.

At the WWDC25 keynote, Apple announced a new AirPods feature that would enable the headphones to pause when they sense that their wearer has fallen asleep. But it’s now been discovered that the function is a little more versatile than that suggests.

If you’re not familiar with the idea of a VPN, don’t worry. Read on as we explain what exactly a VPN is, and how it can help protect your data while traveling.

There are numerous case and band options with the Apple Watch, but make sure the combination you want doesn’t mean you miss out on a tasty...

Apple imported a lot of Macs in Q1, but don't...

New shipment estimates by supply chain analysts suggest that Apple may have gained computing marketshare in the first quarter of 2025, but the report ignores that shipments aren't sales, and Apple stuffed the channel with hardware ahead of tariff impacts.

Mac shipments jumped in 2025
Apple entered 2025 with faster shipment growth than rivals, with Mac shipments jumping 28.7%. Rivals HP, Dell and Lenovo managed only single-digit growth, according to Canalys data released on July 1.

Apple shipped roughly 2.7 million desktops and notebooks, raising its share of the U.S. PC shipment market to about 16%, up from just over 14% a year earlier in 2024. These figures measure what Apple sent into retail channels, not how many Macs were actually bought by end users.

Following its recall of one US-only Power Bank, Anker has now issued a worldwide recall and replace notice for five more similar batteries. Here's what's impacted and how to get a refund.

Proton Joins Antitrust Lawsuit Against Apple's...

Encrypted communications provider Proton has joined an antitrust lawsuit against Apple, filing a legal complaint that claims the company's App Store practices harm developers, consumers, and privacy. The Switzerland-based firm joined a group of Korean developers who sued Apple in May rather than filing a separate case.

Proton asked the US District Court for Northern California to require Apple to allow alternative app stores, expose those stores through its own App Store, permit developers to disable Apple's in-app payment system, and provide full access to Apple APIs. The company added a privacy-focused argument to typical antitrust complaints, contending that Apple's pricing model particularly penalizes companies that refuse to harvest user data. Developers of free apps typically sell user data to cover costs, while privacy-focused companies like Proton must charge subscriptions for revenue, making Apple's commission cuts more burdensome.

Future Apple Vision Pro headsets may use software...

Apple is researching how to make software for the Apple Vision Pro to help prevent motion sickness from perceived motion, as well as caused by the motion of a vehicle.

We won't now see an Apple Car, but some of the technology invented for it may be coming to the Apple Vision Pro — image credit: Apple
Probably all Apple Vision Pro users say that wearing your headset during a flight is more embarrassing — or at least prone to getting knocked in the overhead storage compartment. But some say that depending on what you're watching, they can get motion sickness because of how the headset's sensors are sometimes thrown by the movement of the aircraft.

It's like an exaggerated version of the motion sickness that some users feel when, say, reading their iPhone in a moving bus....

Google's note-taking app Keep is dead on Apple...

Google just pulled its note-taking app Keep from Apple Watch, extending a long and storied history of Google killing off products.

Google just pulled its note-taking app Keep
Alphabet Inc.'s Google pulled its Keep note-taking app from Apple Watch with an update on June 30, 2025. The move leaves users without a Google-backed way to take notes on the wrist.

Keep launched for watchOS in 2019 but never got much attention. It lacked watch face complications and other core features. Over time, it fell behind.

iPhone 17: Everything we know so far about the...

Macworld

In just a couple of months, Apple will unveil the iPhone 17. But you don’t need to wait to find out what it’s all about. Rumors, leaks, and info started to circulate months before the iPhone 16 was even formally announced, and there isn’t much we don’t know by now. Here’s everything we know about Apple’s new iPhones so far—and be sure to check back until the big event in September.

iPhone 17 software: What was announced at WWDC?

Apple didn’t reveal anything new about the iPhone 17, but we learned that iOS 26 will bring a lot of exciting new features to all iPhone users. A new Liquid Glass design language uses translucent layers and specular highlights to give all the interface elements a glass-like look that adds depth and realism to the user experience — a look and feel that will consistent across all Apple devices.

Many of the iPhone apps are getting updates as well. The Phone app will feature a Call...

Watch out for this crafty iPhone phishing scam

Macworld

iPhone owners beware: a new and surprisingly plausible phishing scam is making the rounds, and could easily catch out the unwary.

The message, which has been seen by AppleInsider reporters, claims to be from the delivery company UPS. It says a package is ready to be delivered, and encourages the recipient to click on a link to set this up. Of course, the link goes to a fake website where personal data can be harvested.

“We attempted to deliver your UPS package on [date],” the message reads, “but were unable to contact you and the delivery could not be completed. Your package needs to be signed for in person, so please reschedule the delivery by doing the following.” And then you get the link.

iOS’s security measures, created for precisely these kinds of situations, mean links in...

Brazil wants its piece of the App Store anti-...

Brazil has tried fining Apple over the App Store before and backed down, but its technology council is now urging it since other nations are.

The App Store continues to be under first in Brazil
In late 2022, early 2023, Brazil's Conselho Administrativo de Defesa Economica (CADE) regulator opened an investigation following complaints from firms including MercadoLibre, a Latin American ecommerce platform. Now that regulator's technology advisors have concluded that Apple is guilty of the accusations.

The General Superintendence of the Administrative Council of Economic Defense (SG/CADE) said in announcement (...

Betas, more betas, and everything else coming from...

Macworld

July is always an interesting month for Apple releases.

There’s never any new hardware, and many of the services releases kind of slow down over the summer.

But it’s also a big month for the beta releases of Apple’s major upcoming operating system updates. Apple announces them at WWDC in June and releases developer-only betas, but the public betas start up in July. Those are easier to sign up for and install, and more polished and stable than the early developer releases.

Apps and software updates

The beta releases for iOS 26, macOS 26,...

Apple accuses ex-engineer of stealing details of...

Apple is suing a design engineer who allegedly copied Apple Vision Pro research and is using it in his new role at Snap, maker of Snapchat and smart glasses.

The current Apple Vision Pro
There's probably now a standard pro forma lawsuit that Apple gets out every year, as this latest example of alleged trade secret theft is far from the first. In 2022, an employee leaked confidential information to the press, while in 2023, three ex-Apple engineers were accused of stealing Apple Car.

Macworld

While we’re still waiting for some of the Apple Intelligence Siri features promised next year, a big new report from Mark Gurman at Bloomberg says that Apple is talking with Anthropic and OpenAI about replacing Siri with a version of Claude or ChatGPT.

This would be a massive shift from the current plans, which involve Apple continuing to improve its own in-house LLM model as it tries to deliver critical new Siri features that were supposed to come this Spring, and still have no real release date.

The report says that Apple has spoken with both...

Ad nauseam: Apple might actually be doomed if this...

Macworld

Um… what the heck is going on with Apple’s advertising? Forget the problem with Apple selling ads, which is also a problem. Apple has a problem making ads.

Disclaimer: you can’t talk about Apple ads without discussing the “Get a Mac” ads. Legally, the Macalope means. There are any number of local, state, and federal laws that prohibit the discussion of Apple ads without first laying the groundwork of the “Get a Mac” ads. So, sorry, the horny one would love to just discuss Apple’s ads of late but… no can do.

To be clear, the Macalope hasn’t checked on this, he’s just assuming it based on every discussion of Apple ads to date that he’s read.

Throughout the late 1990s and the first decade of the 2000s (no, don’t get up, we’ve locked the doors), Apple ran ads that were incredibly good at...

A new rumor has begun circulating that Apple could be turning from its own Apple Intelligence efforts for an upgraded Siri to third-party providers.
