Apple has released new third developer betas of watchOS 11.1, tvOS 18.1, and visionOS 2.1 for testing, but without betas for iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, nor macOS Sequoia 15.1.

Apple has publicly committed to donating to the disaster relief efforts following Hurricane Helene. This is unfortunately just the latest of so many cases that have needed such help, but it's also one Apple's supply chain could be severely affected.

That's because while much or most of Apple's suppliers are overseas, there is a crucial quartz mine in western Northern Carolina in the US. It's so far been closed entirely for five days following the devastation caused by the hurricane.

New iPhones charge faster but nowhere near 45W

Macworld

When the iPhone 16 handsets were unveiled last month, there weren’t many surprises. Most of the upgrades had been leaked long before, or accurately guessed by well-informed analysts. But not everything we heard before the event proved to be correct.

One theory, supported by seemingly robust evidence, was that the new phones would bring a substantial increase in wired charging speed, all the way up to 45W if the power brick and other accessories supported it. (The 15-series iPhones deliver wired charging up to 29W.) This claim was made by a credible leaker and based on a Chinese regulatory filing.

Technically, the pre-event rumor was that the 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max would support...

Here’s why your iPhone is in SOS mode and how to fix...

Macworld

When we take our iPhones out of our pocket to make a call, send a text, or check our email, we expect them to work. When they don’t, it can be a frustrating experience, especially when you can’t get online. If you’re away from Wi-Fi, you’re dependent on a cellular connection, and when that isn’t available, you’ll be alerted with an SOS icon in the status bar. Here’s what it means and how you can fix it.

What is SOS mode?

SOS mode doesn’t mean your iPhone is in distress. Rather, it means your device isn’t connected to a cellular network and can only make emergency calls via satellites. This feature is available in Australia, Canada, the United States, the U.K., Japan, and parts of Europe. In other regions, it will say No Service or Searching. It requires an iPhone 14, 15, or 16 running iOS 18.2 or later.

Why is my iPhone is SOS mode?

There are several reasons why your iPhone may be in SOS mode:

Apple No Longer In Talks To Invest In OpenAI

Apple has withdrawn from discussions to invest in OpenAI's $6.5 billion funding round, though reasons for the decision remain unclear. The company still plans to proceed with integrating ChatGPT into Siri. MacRumors reports: The development comes just a month after WSJ reported that Apple was considering an investment in OpenAI as part of a fundraising effort that could value the AI company at over $100 billion. The high valuation reflects the intense competition in the artificial intelligence sector that OpenAI helped ignite with ChatGPT's launch in late 2022. While Apple has stepped away, other major tech companies remain involved. Microsoft, which has already invested $13 billion in OpenAI, is expected to contribute about $1 billion to this latest round. Nvidia is also reportedly in talks to participate. OpenAI's transition into a for-profit structure may have factored into Apple's decision. Last week, Reuters reported on OpenAI's plan to restructure its core business into a for...

iPhone 16 Pro review: More of the same, and that...

Stop us if you've heard this before — Apple's iPhone 16 Pro remains the sweet spot for performance, price, and device size for the demanding user.

The new iPhone 16 Pro in white titanium
In September 2024, there are a new batch of iPhones. This is known, and expected. Just about everybody in the world knows what they are, what they can do, and how to use them.

There's only so much a company can do with a smartphone to make it stand out in the crowd. Design flair is one, but ultimately, it's still a rectangle with glass and cameras.

Epic sues Google and Samsung, again under the guise...

Epic today filed a new lawsuit against Google and Samsung, four years after first suing Google over its app store monopoly. This time around, as reported by our friends at 9to5Google, Epic is focused on Samsung’s “Auto Blocker” feature that limits users to installing apps from “authorized sources.”

Sweeney, however, continues to falsely claim that Epic is fighting on behalf of “all developers,” not just Epic itself.

The M2 iPad Air just got its best price yet

Macworld

With the second Prime Day event of the year on the horizon, the Apple iPad Air with an M2 chip just got its deepest discount yet. You can get the M2 iPad Air for $549 at Amazon, a $50 discount from its MSRP.

In our review of the iPad Air, we gave the tablet a 4-star rating and noted how great the processor upgrade is while also appreciating the tablet now comes with 128GB minimum storage capacity. Another feature we love about the iPad Air is the screen, even though it hasn’t really changed from the previous model with the M1 chip. The Liquid Retina display has a solid 500 nits brightness, which means you’ll have a great experience even when using it indoors or outside in bright sunshine.

“The lower entry-level price, the increased basic memory...

What SOS on an iPhone means, and how it impacts what...

An iPhone showing "SOS" isn't a cry for help, but it does mean you're having connection issues. This is what the three letters really mean.

SOS Only on an iPhone
SOS is well known as a Morse Code distress signal, quickly and efficiently communicating that there is a major and potentially life-threatening problem. While SOS doesn't actually mean "Save Our Souls" and is really just an agreed-upon communications sequence, the meaning is immediately understandable to almost anyone.

Your iPhone or cellular-equipped iPad can also display SOS in the status bar. However, the meaning is less about the phone being in trouble and more about what it cannot do.

Apple Intelligence-powered smart display set to...

Macworld

Apple has never quite cracked the smart home market, and from time to time we hear about yet another push into the sector. According to one reliable leaker, the next such attempt will take place next year with the launch of two new products and an entirely new operating system. In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman predicts that the next Apple OS will be called homeOS, based on tvOS, and that this will run on a pair of new smart displays.

While targeting a broadly similar market and both running homeOS, the two devices will be markedly different in...

All of us should use iPhone passcodes and any of us can forget them, but few of us are New York City mayors being indicted for corruption and claiming to have changed the code to help investigators.

iPhone passcode
Following news of his indictment in September 2024, more details have emerged of how investigators seized the Apple devices owned by Mayor Adams in November 2023. The full court filing shows that while two of his cellphones were seized then, they did not include his personal iPhone.

"When Adams produced his personal cellphone the next day in response to a subpoena," says the filing, "it was 'locked,' such that the device required a...

  • Great value for money.

Cons

  • Unable to easily access Google Drive and iCloud Drive’s online content given sandboxing between the developers.

RIP Android 2008-2025

Macworld

Like a soft-hearted boxer trying to give the crowd value for money, Apple has done its best for years to keep Google standing in the smartphone ring. If it truly exerted itself, we always felt, the Cupertino Crusher could put the Mountain View Mangler on the canvas in short order. But the company could never quite bring itself to apply the coup de grâce.

The reason, of course, has nothing to do with charity—Apple simply doesn’t want to release an iPhone that’s better or more expensive to manufacture than it needs to be. It has numerous advantages over the various Android hardware vendors: it has more money to spend on R&D, it can control and optimise hardware and software together, it has better customer trust and brand recognition, and its business model isn’t based on advertising and data capture. But while an “insanely great” iPhone might kill Android as a realistic alternative, it would cut into profit...

Why can’t Apple’s Pro users have fun too?

Macworld

Writing the column this week is proving more difficult than usual, because of a major distraction. My iPhone 16 Plus arrived a couple of hours ago, and it’s taunting me.

I’m not sure how many brand-new iPhones I’ve unboxed over the years–it must be more than a dozen–but the excitement never quite fades. From the hyper-engineered packaging to the user-friendly data transfer process, setting up a new iPhone is a weirdly fun chore. An adven-chore, if you like.

I’m particularly excited about this year’s new device because of its color. When given the choice (by no means guaranteed, when you’re a tech reviewer) I nearly always ask for the pink finish, but there’s pinks and there’s pinks. My iPhone 15 Plus looked nice enough in a delicate pale rose. But the 16 Plus has real punch: it’s a vibrant lilacky pink, the color of British sweets and 1980s spandex leotards. I’ve paired it with a fuchsia case for maximum...
