New Macs, Apple Intelligence, and everything else...
Macworld
October is starting to become one of the most prominent months in the yearly Apple calendar. In the last decade, Apple has had major media events in six Octobers, and we expect this year will be the seventh as Apple gears up to announce new Macs.
But it’s not just about new hardware. For years, Apple’s big operating system releases have come in September but with a few missing features that roll out in later updates, and October is when we expect the first one. This year that is especially relevant, as iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 will deliver the first Apple Intelligence features. Here’s everything we expect in a busy month from Apple.
New hardware releases

While some are calling it boring, there are lot of great spec updates in iPhone 16 Pro Max with the most impactful being significant improvement to photography workflows that affect everyone.
iPhone 16 Pro Max review
Iteration is only a sin if it isn't being useful, and iPhone 16 Pro Max manages to be a quiet leap over iPhone 15 Pro Max despite looking nearly identical. The only real giveaway besides color is the incredible size of the device and the new button.
The last few iPhones have gone beyond the usual processor and camera updates by adding in some kind of special feature. iPhone 14 Pro...

Two iPhone buyers conspired to rob and murder...
Police in India have arrested a man who ordered an iPhone and then killed the courier rather than pay the cash-on-delivery fee.
Unboxing the iPhone 16 Pro Max
The phone was ordered via Indian online ecommerce site Flipkart, which has previously partnered with Apple over sales promotions. In this case, it's not clear what reseller was selling the iPhone via Flipkart, but whichever it was, it offered a Cash On Delivery (COD) option.
According to The Independent, the accused — identified only as Gajanan — and an accomplice named Akash ordered an iPhone worth approximately $1,800. Delivery agent Bharat Sahu then brought the iPhone...

Best iPhone 16, Plus, Pro & Max cases
Macworld
The first thing you should do after buying a new iPhone 16, be it an iPhone 16 Plus, Pro or Max, is to admire it and then swiftly cover it up. Buy yourself an iPhone 16 case to protect your precious mobile after splashing a ton of cash on it, and add some style to make your new handset more personal.
iPhone 16 case: Protection
The most common causes for accidental smartphone damage are: dropping your phone on the ground, it falling from a pocket or bag, or it being knocked off a table. The main results of such phone accidents are cracked and scratched screens, followed by chipped corners and sides. In fact,...

Meta’s vision for AR isn’t based in reality
Macworld
Everyone is talking about Meta’s Orion AR glasses so the horny one supposes we must discuss them. Yes, the Macalope, like many others, will now give you opinions about how Orion, a device you cannot buy, compares to the Apple Vision Pro, a device most people do not own.
He hopes you’re happy.
This is how the technology commentary sausage is made. Don’t look away. Observe as the ground animal products are fed into the casing made of intestines. Let’s start with The Verge and its coverage, titled, “Meta’s big tease”
Consisting of what look like an extremely chunky pair of Ray-Bans, a wrist sensor, and a control module, the Orion AR glasses are a prototype and not available to purchase, which is just as well as Meta says they’d cost “in the ballpark of $10...

Apple No Longer In Talks To Invest In OpenAI
Apple has withdrawn from discussions to invest in OpenAI's $6.5 billion funding round, though reasons for the decision remain unclear. The company still plans to proceed with integrating ChatGPT into Siri. MacRumors reports: The development comes just a month after WSJ reported that Apple was considering an investment in OpenAI as part of a fundraising effort that could value the AI company at over $100 billion. The high valuation reflects the intense competition in the artificial intelligence sector that OpenAI helped ignite with ChatGPT's launch in late 2022. While Apple has stepped away, other major tech companies remain involved. Microsoft, which has already invested $13 billion in OpenAI, is expected to contribute about $1 billion to this latest round. Nvidia is also reportedly in talks to participate. OpenAI's transition into a for-profit structure may have factored into Apple's decision. Last week, Reuters reported on OpenAI's plan to restructure its core business into a for...

Macworld
With the second Prime Day event of the year on the horizon, the Apple iPad Air with an M2 chip just got its deepest discount yet. You can get the M2 iPad Air for $549 at Amazon, a $50 discount from its MSRP.
In our review of the iPad Air, we gave the tablet a 4-star rating and noted how great the processor upgrade is while also appreciating the tablet now comes with 128GB minimum storage capacity. Another feature we love about the iPad Air is the screen, even though it hasn’t really changed from the previous model with the M1 chip. The Liquid Retina display has a solid 500 nits brightness, which means you’ll have a great experience even when using it indoors or outside in bright sunshine.

What SOS on an iPhone means, and how it impacts what...
An iPhone showing "SOS" isn't a cry for help, but it does mean you're having connection issues. This is what the three letters really mean.
SOS Only on an iPhone
SOS is well known as a Morse Code distress signal, quickly and efficiently communicating that there is a major and potentially life-threatening problem. While SOS doesn't actually mean "Save Our Souls" and is really just an agreed-upon communications sequence, the meaning is immediately understandable to almost anyone.
Your iPhone or cellular-equipped iPad can also display SOS in the status bar. However, the meaning is less about the phone being in trouble and more about what it cannot do.

RIP Android 2008-2025
Macworld
Like a soft-hearted boxer trying to give the crowd value for money, Apple has done its best for years to keep Google standing in the smartphone ring. If it truly exerted itself, we always felt, the Cupertino Crusher could put the Mountain View Mangler on the canvas in short order. But the company could never quite bring itself to apply the coup de grâce.
The reason, of course, has nothing to do with charity—Apple simply doesn’t want to release an iPhone that’s better or more expensive to manufacture than it needs to be. It has numerous advantages over the various Android hardware vendors: it has more money to spend on R&D, it can control and optimise hardware and software together, it has better customer trust and brand recognition, and its business model isn’t based on advertising and data capture. But while an “insanely great” iPhone might kill Android as a realistic alternative, it would cut into profit...

Why can’t Apple’s Pro users have fun too?
Macworld
Writing the column this week is proving more difficult than usual, because of a major distraction. My iPhone 16 Plus arrived a couple of hours ago, and it’s taunting me.
I’m not sure how many brand-new iPhones I’ve unboxed over the years–it must be more than a dozen–but the excitement never quite fades. From the hyper-engineered packaging to the user-friendly data transfer process, setting up a new iPhone is a weirdly fun chore. An adven-chore, if you like.
I’m particularly excited about this year’s new device because of its color. When given the choice (by no means guaranteed, when you’re a tech reviewer) I nearly always ask for the pink finish, but there’s pinks and there’s pinks. My iPhone 15 Plus looked nice enough in a delicate pale rose. But the 16 Plus has real punch: it’s a vibrant lilacky pink, the color of British sweets and 1980s spandex leotards. I’ve paired it with a fuchsia case for maximum...
