Apple Plans First Sub-$999 MacBook Using iPhone Chip...

Apple plans to release a cheaper MacBook powered by the A18 Pro chip used in the iPhone 16 Pro line, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The laptop will be priced below $999 -- first time for a MacBook Air -- and go into production in late 2025 or early 2026 on the new laptop, the analyst noted.

The device will feature the same 13-inch screen as the current MacBook Air, with the chip representing the primary difference between models. The A18 Pro chip delivers single-core performance around 3,500 on Geekbench, trailing the M4 chip only slightly, though multicore performance lags significantly at approximately 8,780 versus 15,000 for the M4. The A18's multicore performance matches the original 2020 M1 chip.

Apple praised for ‘noticeable’ fixes to iOS 26’s...

Macworld

As we keep warning prospective testers, Apple’s software betas are prone to bugs. Until a big software update is pushed live to the general public—and sometimes even beyond that point—it should be regarded as unfinished, flawed, and liable to go wrong in all sorts of unexpected ways.

This particularly applies to a first developer beta, the most speculative and the least finished of an update’s run; the one that has been subject to precisely zero testing in the real world outside Apple’s labs. And so the first dev betas of iOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26 and so on, which became available on the first day of WWDC 2025 earlier this month, were a risky proposition. And the second betas, which landed last week, were eagerly awaited. And...

Analyst Ming–Chi Kuo has suggested that Apple plans to launch an all–new MacBook next year, powered by an iPhone processor. Specifically, he expects it to have the A18 Pro chip which currently powers the iPhone 16 Pro line–up.

While there’s no word on pricing, the only way the report makes sense is if Apple is targeting an even lower price than the $999 starting–point of the current MacBook Air. Indeed, if you factor in on that, then it would have to be significantly cheaper. But there may be a more cynical possibility …

In online publishing, as in Hollywood, nobody knows anything. Why did a dashed-off news story get vastly more traffic than a painstakingly honed opinion piece? Who can say. As flies to wanton boys are we to the algorithms; they kill us for their sport.

Last week’s mystifying success (not that I’m ungrateful, Google!) was a short article about a ringtone. In the first beta of iOS 26, testers discovered a new variant of the Reflection ringtone; in the second beta, this became a usable option. “ReflectionAlt1-EncoreRemix,” as it almost certainly won’t be called by the time iOS 26 launches to the public in the fall, is a definite improvement on the original, and I thought it was worth a quick story. What I did not expect was for it to go viral. To be clear: not complaining.

Then again, maybe...

20 years of Apple Ring rumors continue with leaker...

A prominent leaker has proposed it is time for the Apple Ring to be the company's next wearable. It's an idea that Apple has been working on for years, but is still far from becoming a reality.

A render of a ring with the Apple logo and health sensors
The rumor mill often goes through a cycle where it surfaces hints and claims about unreleased Apple hardware. This often happens for products that sound like a logical leap for Apple's next release, but haven't been the subject of a rumor for quite some time.

On Sunday, it was the Apple Ring's turn, thanks to Mark Gurman's "Power On" newsletter for Bloomberg. In the email to subscribers, Gurman proposes that the...

Doug Brown, who maintains a blog that documents his experiments and research into older computers, said that he accidentally discovered the Easter egg while looking through resources in the Power Mac G3's ROM. This model was made by Apple between November 1997 and August 1999.

The same ROM was used for the minitower, all-in-one, and beige desktop models. Brown said he was spending "a lazy Sunday" using a pair of tools called ROM Fiend and Hex Fiend to look through the G3's ROM...

After 27 Years, Engineer Discovers How To Display...

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Ars Technica: On Tuesday, software engineer Doug Brown published his discovery of how to trigger a long-known but previously inaccessible Easter egg in the Power Mac G3's ROM: a hidden photo of the development team that nobody could figure out how to display for 27 years. While Pierre Dandumont first documented the JPEG image itself in 2014, the method to view it on the computer remained a mystery until Brown's reverse engineering work revealed that users must format a RAM disk with the text "secret ROM image."

Brown stumbled upon the image while using a hex editor tool called Hex Fiend with Eric Harmon's Mac ROM template to explore the resources stored in the beige Power Mac G3's ROM. The ROM appeared in desktop, minitower, and all-in-one G3 models from 1997 through 1999. "While I was browsing through the ROM, two things caught my eye," Brown wrote. He found both the HPOE resource containing the JPEG image of team members and a...

The maker movement helped propel a new market of small hardware for producing or designing things. It helped the widespread adoption of 3D printing, while speciality hardware like Cricut is seeing massive growth.

The success of high-end tools for consumers to get creative with has also spread into the field of engraving. While you could previously try to freehand an etched design using a Dremel and some careful fingerwork, even engraving has become so much easier to do.

DeepSeek Faces Ban From Apple, Google App Stores In...

Germany's data protection commissioner has urged Apple and Google to remove Chinese AI startup DeepSeek from their app stores due to concerns about data protection. Reuters reports: Commissioner Meike Kamp said in a statement on Friday that she had made the request because DeepSeek illegally transfers users' personal data to China. The two U.S. tech giants must now review the request promptly and decide whether to block the app in Germany, she added, though her office has not set a precise timeframe. According to its own privacy policy, DeepSeek stores numerous pieces of personal data, such as requests to its AI program or uploaded files, on computers in China.

"DeepSeek has not been able to provide my agency with convincing evidence that German users' data is protected in China to a level equivalent to that in the European Union," [Commissioner Meike Kamp] said.
