iOS 17.4 has an unexpected charging benefit for...

While still not getting the full charging speed that Qi2 allows, the iPhone 12 now charges a bit faster after the iOS 17.4 release.

Apple's iPhone 12 introduced wireless MagSafe charging in 2020
Apple's MagSafe first launched as a competitor to Qi charging with the iPhone 12 in 2020. Since then, a Qi2 standard has been released which is more in line with MagSafe, but Apple has continued to limit its peak charging speed.

MagSafe allows charging of up to 15W, but to date any non-Apple-certified charger has only been able to charge at 7.5W. It's confusing because Apple contributed its MagSafe technology to the Qi2 standard and the...

Apple is working to remove the need for users to add prescription lenses to the Apple Vision Pro, by having the headset itself adapt to different vision needs.

Apple Vision Pro ZEISS optical inserts
Apple Vision Pro can be used by people with very many — but not all — visual impairment issues. So far, that involves selecting and using lenses or optical inserts.

That does mean that you can't just order an Apple Vision Pro online and expect it to be right for you. It's clearly in both Apple's and users' interests to make it more convenient to buy an Apple Vision Pro, and to have it work...

MacPaw, the creator of CleanMyMac and other utilities, has a cybersecurity division called Moonlock. During one of their investigations, they discovered a malware sample labeled CleanMyMac, pretending to be the legitimate version.

The malware used various methods to infiltrate computers, hide its presence, and steal information. It could trick a computer into running harmful code by pretending to be a helpful app, then cover its tracks to avoid being spotted by security tools.

Apple wants a Magic Mouse you can tilt for more...

Forty years after it popularized the mouse, Apple is researching a replacement that users can tilt or take off the desk entirely to move their cursor around.

Future Magic Mouse designs could include the ability to tilt in order to control further functions
The mouse came into its own with the original Mac in 1984, and then Apple made trackballs the thing to have with the PowerBook range in 1991. Three years later, those were old hat, and trackpads were in.

After decades of use, mice and trackpads still rule, and trackballs have only become a little niche. We're covered for input devices, but that isn't stopping Apple from looking for new ones.

Recent 'MFA Bombing' Attacks Targeting...

An anonymous reader quotes a report from KrebsOnSecurity: Several Apple customers recently reported being targeted in elaborate phishing attacks that involve what appears to be a bug in Apple's password reset feature. In this scenario, a target's Apple devices are forced to display dozens of system-level prompts that prevent the devices from being used until the recipient responds "Allow" or "Don't Allow" to each prompt. Assuming the user manages not to fat-finger the wrong button on the umpteenth password reset request, the scammers will then call the victim while spoofing Apple support in the caller ID, saying the user's account is under attack and that Apple support needs to "verify" a one-time code. Despite Apple lobbying hard against the bill, Oregon has passed its right-to-repair bill that outright bans the controversial practice of parts pairing in repairs.

Oregon signs its right-to-repair bill into law
On Wednesday, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek signed SB 1596 into law. The law is designed to make it easier for consumers to repair their own devices or have them repaired by someone outside of authorized service repair stations.

Most notably, the bill is the first of its kind to ban parts pairing. "Parts pairing" is a term that refers to Apple's practice of matching certain components, such as the screen or battery, with the specific iPhone they were originally installed in. This ensures that only genuine Apple parts are used in the device repair.

Affinity's design tools are known for their power and simplicity
By integrating Canva with Affinity, the company will leverage both its web-based offerings and stand-alone apps. Canva users will gain full-featured tools for the professional, while Affinity users will likely gain web-based AI-driven tools.

Affinity Photo, Affinity Designer, and Affinity Publisher are affordable choices for photographers and designers and are some of the few creator apps that offer perpetual licensing. If you're getting dozens of password reset...

Apple users are becoming the target of a new wave of phishing attacks called "MFA Bombing" that relies on user impatience, and a bug in Apple's password reset mechanism.

An example of the Apple ID password reset notification
Phishing attacks often rely on users supplying information to an attacker or allowing them to do something to their account, often via an email, text message, or other messaging means. A recently discovered phishing attack has used a new route to make victims fall for it, by using Apple's password reset system.

BOE becomes favorite to supply 6.1-inch screens for...

The iPhone SE 4 could have its displays produced by BOE, with Samsung Display allegedly out of the running over pricing issues.

Previous iPhone SE models
The display of Apple's iPhone lineup is an important but expensive component of the entire smartphone, with Apple relying on a small number of screen suppliers for its needs. If a Wednesday report is to be believed, a three-horse-race has become a two-horse battle after one pulled out of negotiations.

According to a ZDNet Korea report seen by IT Home, the Chinese display maker BOE has become the most likely supplier of displays for the iPhone SE 4. The change is due to long-time Apple screen partner Samsung Display exiting talks over the part.

A section notes that Apple last year spent half as much on research and development (R&D) as it did on AAPL share buybacks, presenting this as ‘evidence’ of the lack of competition faced by the company.

It contrasts this with Google, whose R&D spend matched that of its share buybacks, suggesting this means the search giant faces greater competition …

Apple releases incredibly minor iOS & iPadOS...

Oddities in Apple's software updates are continuing, as now it has quietly shipped an iOS and iPadOS revision whose version number and a lack of an "over the air" update path suggests has only the most minor release.

iPadOS on an iPad
There was already a mystery around how Apple was announcing iPadOS 17.4.1 as coming on March 26, 2024, even though it was already out alongside iOS 17.4.1 as of March 21. That could have been just two parts of Apple not checking with each other, but now there is a little more.

For Apple has now issued a new update for both iOS and iPadOS, with a build number of 21E237. The one that came out on March 21 was build number 21E236.

How to convert a Live Photo into a video clip

The Live Photos feature in the Camera app on an iPhone or iPad takes about two seconds of video. Here's how to turn it into an actual video clip.

It is sometimes handy to capture a very short video of something, like a kid doing a cartweel. Live Photos capture those moments, and can be played, looped, bounced back and forth, or have a "long exposure" effect that blurs motion.

This makes Live Photos very handy for capturing a moment that involves motion rather than just a still image. You can edit a Live Photo to turn any part of it into a still picture as well.
