Yay! Systems Settings will get an interface tune-up...

Macworld

With macOS 13 Ventura, Apple performed a major overhaul to the System Preferences interface and changed its name to System Settings. The change was an attempt to better unify it more with the design of Settings in iOS, but it ended up creating consternation with users due to the illogical placement of some settings. Two years after the change, Apple is going to tweak the System Settings interface even further with macOS 15–hopefully for the better.

According to a report by AppleInsider, Apple will tweak System Settings so the settings in the left column are...

Macworld

The next version of the Mac operating system, macOS 15, is expected to make its debut at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, which kicks off with a keynote on June 10. After a beta period, the official release occurs in the fall.

Rumors of what macOS 15 will entail are scarce as usual–because software development doesn’t rely on third-party production and manufacturing like hardware does, rumors about macOS don’t happen often. But when rumors do leak, they will be tracked in this article. Here’s everything we know so far.

Updated 5/23/24: Apple may tweak the System Settings UI and rename “Apple ID” to “Apple Account.”

Welcome to the Ultra era, where Apple is making...

There is a trend emerging at Apple, and it’s one that could do serious damage to your Apple Card balance.

Apple has long held a reputation for making premium products—both in quality and price. The iPhone is more expensive than most Android phones, the Mac more than your average PC, and so on. Every single major product Apple sells is pricier than the bulk of its competitors. Yet the company is still wildly successful, regardless.

Now, based on recent trends and new reporting, it seems that Apple plans to test its customers’ loyalty by offering even higher cost, super-premium versions of nearly its entire product line.

Welcome to the Ultra era.

All-Screen M5 MacBook With Foldable Display To...

An anonymous reader shares a report: Apple is working on all-screen foldable devices. Unlike its competitors, however, its focus seems less on foldable smartphones and tablets, and instead on an all-screen foldable laptop. Ming-Chi Kuo has previously reported that Apple was developing a 20.3-inch MacBook device for 2027, but today the analyst has shared several key new details about the futuristic MacBook model. One such detail is that Apple is now eyeing an earlier 2026 launch for the product.

Here are some of the key features Kuo expects to see in the all-screen MacBook:
1. Multiple foldable screen options are still possible, with the rumored 20.3-inch display potentially replaced by an 18.8-inch panel. The former would, when folded, resemble a current 14-15-inch MacBook, while the latter would correspond better to a modern day 13-14-inch model like the smaller MacBook Air.
2. A 2026 debut is now expected for the device, one year earlier than previously...

iPhone/iPad retro game emulators: How to find and...

Macworld

In early April, Apple made a surprise decision to allow retro game emulators in the App Store. With them, you can now play old classic games from early game consoles and arcades, but the legalities around doing so are a little complicated.

Here’s what you need to know about retro game emulation on iPhone and iPad, including some of the top apps, how they work, and what to do about ROMs.

What is retro game emulation?

The processor in your iPhone (or laptop or home PC) is many times more powerful than the processors used in old classic arcade games or home consoles like the NES, SNES, Genesis, GameBoy, etc. That means today’s devices are capable of playing older games without breaking a sweat—which is where game emulators come in.

Game emulators have been around for a very long time on PCs...

9-core vs. 10-core M4: Is it worth paying more for...

Macworld

Apple did an interesting thing when it revealed its new M4 iPad Pro: of the four storage options available, the 1TB and 2TB models come with an M4 chip with 10 CPU cores. The lower-priced 256GB and 512GB iPad Pros have a CPU with nine processing cores, one fewer than the higher-storage models. It’s the first time Apple has offered an M-series CPU with an odd number of cores.

Tying the additional CPU core to higher storage tiers is something of an up-sell. Someone who might not not want to pay Apple’s high storage prices might be swayed by the more powerful chip. It’s an intriguing tactic, but the question is, how much improvement does that single additional core provide?

Well, that’s what benchmark tools are for. Using Geekbench 6, we gathered numbers for the 9- and 10-core M4 and compared the...

Why Your Wi-Fi Router Doubles As an Apple AirTag

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Krebs On Security: Apple and the satellite-based broadband service Starlink each recently took steps to address new research into the potential security and privacy implications of how their services geo-locate devices. Researchers from the University of Maryland say they relied on publicly available data from Apple to track the location of billions of devices globally -- including non-Apple devices like Starlink systems -- and found they could use this data to monitor the destruction of Gaza, as well as the movements and in many cases identities of Russian and Ukrainian troops. At issue is the way that Apple collects and publicly shares information about the precise location of all Wi-Fi access points seen by its devices. Apple collects this location data to give Apple devices a crowdsourced, low-power alternative to constantly requesting global positioning system (GPS) coordinates.

Both Apple and Google operate their own Wi-Fi-based...

Apple Customers Hang on to iPads Longer Than iPhones

New data shows that Apple customers hold onto their iPads for much longer than their iPhones before upgrading. A report by CIRP (Consumer Intelligence Research Partners) reveals this information. This data comes after Apple recently unveiled a new lineup of iPads. The question remains: what drives iPad upgrades? A main factor seems to be whether users feel their current device is still […]

iOS 18’s new emoji will finally represent the...

Today the Unicode Consortium previewed the new emoji that are expected to be added to Apple’s upcoming OS updates, including iOS and iPadOS 18, watchOS 11, and more. Though the list isn’t finalized yet, it’s likely that everything outlined will be approved and added to the official set of emoji that platform owners like Apple and Google will adopt.

One standout from the list is a new ‘face with bags under eyes’ emoji that makes me feel truly seen. It’s undoubtedly bound to be one of the most popular additions. Other new emoji include a shovel, fingerprint, beet, and more.

Macworld

If you think there are far too many emoji already, get ready for some bad news: There are always more emoji on their way. The conveyor belt of emojis never stops, and new emojis will keep arriving on your iPhone until the heat death of the emojiverse.

We’ve now got a good idea of the emoji that the conveyor belt is likely to disgorge next year, thanks to the Unicode Consortium publishing the proposals currently expected to feature in version 16.0 of its emoji list. (At time of writing the latest set of emoji is version 15.1.) Version 16.0 is currently slated to include new emoji for:

Best VPN for iPhone: Unlock content with these...

Macworld

There are two main reasons why someone might want to install a VPN on an iPhone. One important reason is to protect their privacy and increase their security. Another key reason is that a VPN can be used to make it look like you are based in a different country, which can unlock content, such as movies and TV shows, that wouldn’t be available where you are.

If you are concerned about how secure the data on you iPhone is a VPN may be a solution that could give you peace of mind. We have a selection of VPNs for iPhone that we recommend below. But first we’ll quickly address why you might, or might not, need a VPN to protect the data on your iPhone.

Do I need a VPN on my iPhone?

Whether you need a VPN on your iPhone depends on your reasons for wanting one. If you were looking for the added security and privacy of a VPN, then Apple covers much of that with iCloud Private Relay. This feature of iCloud+ (which...

MacBook Air and Pro compared: Battery capacity in...

Macworld

Measuring MacBook battery life in straight hours of real-world usage (as Apple likes to do) is not always an accurate metric for comparison purposes as so many use and environmental factors play a part. We can, however, rely on straight technical specifications to tell us the stated battery capacities of each MacBook.

Where Apple is secretive about iPhone battery specifications (see our list of iPhone battery capacities based on teardowns), the company does list MacBook capacities in Watt hours (Wh). We have trawled through the Apple product Tech Specs pages from 2009 to 2024 to bring you as complete a list as we can gather using official Apple battery declarations.

The watt-hour is a unit of energy equivalent to one watt (1W) of power...

SD cards are lightweight and portable, making them popular storage devices. They are commonly used in cameras, car recorders, security doorbells and more. Suppose you are a photography enthusiast who uses SD cards to store your precious memories: you need to be aware that the opposite of their ease of use is their fragility, which means data loss on an SD card may happen suddenly.

The future of the iPhone is coming but it’ll cost...

Macworld

It’s kind of hard to believe today, given how wildly successful the iPhone has been, that in the product’s early days there was only a single iPhone model for sale. It wasn’t until ten years ago, in 2014, that Apple introduced two different iPhone models, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. But that opened the floodgates, and Apple has spent the last ten years trying to find the right combination of new iPhone models to maximize the money it makes from its most important product.

If reports are true, next year Apple’s going to be switching things up again, dropping the iPhone Plus for a dramatic new model. After the discontinuation of the iPhone mini after two years and the (apparent) death of the iPhone Plus after three, what does Apple have up its sleeve for 2025?

The iPhone Ultra...

Apple Says US Antitrust Lawsuit Should Be Dismissed

Apple said on Tuesday it plans to ask a U.S. judge to dismiss a lawsuit filed by the Justice Department and 15 states in March that alleged the iPhone maker monopolized the smartphone market, hurt smaller rivals and drove up prices. From a report: In a letter to U.S. District Judge Julien X. Neals in New Jersey, Apple said "far from being a monopolist, Apple faces fierce competition from well-established rivals, and the complaint fails to allege that Apple has the ability to charge supra-competitive prices or restrict output in the alleged smartphone markets." In the letter to the judge, Apple said the DOJ relies on a new "theory of antitrust liability that no court has recognized."

The government is expected to respond within seven days to the Apple letter, which the court requires parties to submit, hoping to expedite cases before advancing to a potentially more robust and expensive effort to dismiss a lawsuit. The Justice Department alleges that Apple uses its market...
