The iPhone 16 Pro Max is the top smartphone for battery life.
Technology enthusiast site Tom's Guide has updated its rankings of battery life in popular smartphones for manufacturers' latest models. Its testing showed that the iPhone 16 Pro Max's battery, rated at 4685mAh, lasted for 18 hours and six minutes.

By comparison, Chinese smartphone OnePlus 12 managed 17 hours and 37 minutes. That's the closest to the iPhone 16 Pro Max — but the OnePlus 12 has a larger 5,400mAh battery.

iFixit's iPhone 16 teardown revealed a new battery removal process that does away with the usual pull tabs, instead opting for an adhesive that debonds when exposed to a low electrical current. From the report: Only the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus have the new adhesive, and they've earned a 7/10 on iFixit's repairability scale. "Apple definitely seems to be leveling up on repairability," Mokhtari, adding Apple has "landed another repairability win" with this year's base iPhones thanks to the new battery removal procedure. Apple Rolls Back Its Big Plans to Release Movies in...

An anonymous reader shares a report: Apple is rethinking its movie strategy after the disappointing box office performance of several big-budget films, including Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon, Napoleon, Argylle and Fly Me to the Moon. Apple canceled plans to release Wolfs -- an action comedy starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt -- in thousands of theaters globally. Instead, the picture made its debut in a limited number of venues before it became available on the Apple TV+ streaming service on Sept. 27. Apple plans to use a similar approach with the next few titles on its calendar, including the World War II drama Blitz. Apple, which previously had intended to spend about $1 billion annually on blockbusters for cinemas, won't return to the big screen with a wide, global theatrical release until June with F1 -- a film starring Pitt as a former Formula One driver who returns to racing to mentor a rising star.

This 100W power bank that can fast-charge a MacBook...

Macworld

Being able to charge your laptops and smartphones and any other gadgets on the go is just what you need, especially if the battery life of your device has dropped recently. Thankfully, the Baseus Blade Laptop Power Bank is on sale for $54 at Amazon right now, down from its usual $130, so make sure you add this one to your cart.

This slim 20,000mAh battery pack is ideal for charging laptops, including your favorite MacBook, iPhones, and iPads. I personally have the second edition and wish I’d have this version instead. While this model is only a bit thicker than the second version, it has a lot more power, which is essential when charging laptops.

Still, even though this is a thicker model, it’s still slim at just 0.7 inches, making it super easy to slip into your bag next to your laptop or iPad. It also weighs just a little over a pound, so you don’t make...

The iPhone will finally kill Android in 2025

Macworld

Like a soft-hearted boxer trying to give the crowd value for money, Apple has done its best for years to keep Google standing in the smartphone ring. If it truly exerted itself, we always felt, the Cupertino Crusher could put the Mountain View Mangler on the canvas in short order. But the company could never quite bring itself to apply the coup de grâce.

The reason, of course, has nothing to do with charity—Apple simply doesn’t want to release an iPhone that’s better or more expensive to manufacture than it needs to be. It has numerous advantages over the various Android hardware vendors: it has more money to spend on R&D, it can control and optimise hardware and software together, it has better customer trust and brand recognition, and its business model isn’t based on advertising and data capture. But while an “insanely great” iPhone might kill Android as a realistic alternative, it would cut into profit...

You'd be forgiven for thinking that the Ultra 2 is the most expensive Apple Watch. Not a lot of time gets devoted to Apple's high fashion partnership with the French fashion brand, Hermes.

This partnership has lasted for years. In 2024 a custom Hermes version of the latest Apple Watch was again made available, paired with various Hermes bands.

Meta stored 600 million Facebook and Instagram...

Across Facebook and Instagram, Meta has been storing more than half a billion users' passwords in plain text, with some easily readable for more than a decade.

One of Facebook/Meta's headquarters
The issue was first uncovered in 2019 when Facebook admitted to "hundreds of millions" of passwords being stored unencrypted. Facebook, now Meta, said that the passwords were not available outside of the company — but also admitted that around 2,000 engineers had made about 9 million queries on that user database.

Now Meta's operation in Ireland has finally been fined $101.5 million after a five-year investigation by the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC). The fine is levied under Europe's stringent General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

While we enjoy our new iPhone 16, Apple is working to make a lower cost Apple Vision Pro, Meta Orion is pretending to be regular glasses, and Jony Ive's firm has a cute new logo, on the AppleInsider podcast.

Apple's new iPhone 16 Pro
AppleInsider is not into style over substance, it's always about going deeper. Still, the Desert Titanium color on the new iPhone 16 Pro range is glorious — and Jony Ive's new LoveFrom logo is the cutest thing you'll see this week.

Not that it has competition for that title from, say, Meta Orion. Billed as the future of mixed reality headsets, it's currently making a spectacle of itself — or rather spectacles, looking like 1950s-style glasses. Yet it is a...

How to get WhatsApp on iPad

Macworld

WhatsApp is an incredibly popular iPhone app, connecting more than a billion active members around the world every day. It lets you send messages to friends, or groups of friends, over Wi-Fi or 4G/5G and make savings on your phone bill. (Of course, you may end up paying for data if you go over your limit, so don’t go crazy!)

Unfortunately, right now WhatsApp is only available for iPhone–there isn’t a version of the app for the iPad despite the fact that WhatsApp boss Will Cathcart (in January 2022) acknowledged in an interview that people had been asking for an iPad app for a long time. Cathcart revealed that much of the infrastructure to develop an iPad app is already in place, but he made no immediate promises.

Things could be about to change though. WhatsApp for iPad is available as a beta via TestFlight and can be...

Apple has pulled 60 VPNs from its App Store in Russia, according to research from anti-censorship org GreatFire. From a report: The iThing-maker's action comes amid a Kremlin crackdown on VPNs that has already seen a ban on privacy-related extensions to the open source Firefox browser. The software's developer, Mozilla, defied that ban and allowed the extensions back into its web store. In July, Apple removed at least one VPN from its Russian App Store. Cupertino removed at least 60 more between early July and September 18, according to research by GreatFire posted to its site that tracks Apple censorship. The org's research asserts that 98 VPNs are now unavailable in Russia -- but doesn't specify if the removals were made in the iOS or macOS app stores.
