Aug. 10 highlights from the Apple-Samsung trial
The Apple-Samsung patent battle/trial is underway. Following is some of the latest highlights and where you can find more info. "A court document filed by Samsung on Thursday revealed the company's smartphone and tablet sales numbers from June 2010 to June 2012, metrics that have been kept strictly confidential until now." -- "AppleInsider" (www.appleinsider.com) "Apple and Samsung's courtroom patent melee had outed sales figures for the two companies' mobile devices. Both firms have been trying to hold back as much of their performance data as possible from the public during the legal scuffle, in which Samsung is accused of copying the Apple iPhone design for its own products." -- "The Register" (http://macte.ch/mSD6R) "Samsung just brought a motion for a court order to "to label joint exhibit devices in a manner not obscuring trade dress". Apple apparently has custody over those joint exhibit devices, most of which are Samsung devices. According to Samsung's representation, Apple...

In Western Europe, mobile shipments grew 4%, while desk-based computer shipments declined 12.8% in the second quarter of 2012. The professional computer market declined 5.3%, while the consumer market was almost flat, with 0.4% growth.  Despite losing market share, HP retained the No. 1 position in the Western Europe computer market in the second quarter of 2012. Acer increased its market share by 2.7 percentage points, which helped it retain the No. 2 spot. In the second quarter of 2012 the U.K. computer shipments totaled 2.5 million units, a decline of 7.6% compared with the equivalent period in...

Blizzard's internal network illegally accessed
Blizzard says its security team found an unauthorized and illegal access into their internal network here at Blizzard. Some data was illegally accessed, including a list of email addresses for global Battle.net users, outside of China. For players on North American servers (which generally includes players from North America, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia) the answer to the personal security question, and information relating to Mobile and Dial-In Authenticators were also accessed. Based on what they currently know, this information alone isn't enough for anyone to gain access to Battle.net accounts, says Mike Morhalme of Blizzard. "We quickly took steps to close off this access and began working with law enforcement and security experts to investigate what happened," he adds. Read more about it at http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/securityupdate.html .

Court order may have damaged Apple's defense in VirnetX...
A a court order has been handed down that may have "severely damaged" Apple's defense in its patent infringement case with VirnetX, reports "Seeking Alpha" (http://macte.ch/vLj5k). The judge in the case largely adopted and granted VirnetX's proposed sanctions against Apple, the article adds. Sanctions are penalties used by courts to reprimand or correct the damage done by an attorney for violating rules or abusing the judicial process. The sanction in this case came about in light of Apple's actions in interfering with a witness deposition, notes "Seeking Alpha." In November 2011 VirnetX sued Apple for -- what else? -- patent infringement. The lawsuit -- filed in the US District Court in the Eastern District of Texas -- alleges that Apple violated its US patent (number 7188180) for "method for establishing secure communication link between computers for virtual private network. The invention describes a technique "for establishing a secure communication link between a first computer...
