Money for Mac OS X rings up version 4.4.4
Jumsoft (www.jumsoft.com) has revamped the import feature of its finance and budgeting app, Money. Version 4.4.4 features a redesigned import view, a duplicate detection feature for transactions being imported, support of the MT940 file format, bulk editing during import, and other improvements. T-Mobile joins the iPhone party
T-Mobile USA will begin carrying the iPhone 5 on Friday, April 12. The carrier says that qualifying customers can get an iPhone 5 for US$99.99 down, plus monthly payments. T-Mobile is the only major U.S. wireless company to offer iPhone 5 with no annual service contract plus unlimited talk, text and Web on a nationwide 4G network, according to President and CEO John Legere. Because there are no annual contracts, customers make the decision when to upgrade their devices, not the carrier, he adds. Pupil is new, customizable resolution switcher for the Mac
Louder Than Ten, in collaboration with Padraig Kennedy, has launched Pupil, a menu bar utility for Mac OS X. It lets users label and order their favorite display settings, so they can switch resolutions quickly and easily without having to go into System Preferences. Pupil unlocks the native 1:1 pixel resolution for Retina displays, giving Retina screens access to non-Retina modes for testing compatibility on apps, sites and more. Avenza releases MAPublisher 9.2 for Adobe Illustrator

PCI Geomatics releases GeoImaging Accelerator 2013

Smart connected device market crosses one billion shipment
According to the International Data Corp. (IDC), worldwide shipments of smart connected devices grew 29.1% year over year in 2012, crossing one billion units shipped with a value of US$576.9 billion. The market expansion was largely driven by 78.4% year-over-year growth in tablet shipments, which surpassed 128 million in 2012. Looking specifically at the results for the fourth quarter of 2012 (4Q12), combined shipments of desktop PCs, notebook PCs, tablets, and smartphones was nearly 378 million and revenues were more than $168 billion. In terms of market share, Apple significantly closed the gap with market leader Samsung in the quarter, as the combination of Apple's iPhone 5 and iPad Mini brought Apple up to 20.3% unit shipment share versus 21.2% for Samsung. Mac Shutdown revved to version 3.0
Pomola Software has updated Mac Shutdown X (http://tinyurl.com/a2sdyfz), a Mac OS X utility for shutting down a Mac on a specified event or on a specified date and time, to version 3.0. The upgrade offers improved auto-rotate performance for high-resolution scans and improved recognition performance, accuracy and stability. Apple acquires WifiSLAM
Apple has paid US$20 million to buy WifiSLAM, a company that develops ways for mobile apps to identify a user's whereabouts in a building using Wi-Fi signals, reports "The Wall Street Journal" (http://tinyurl.com/antm4gf). An Apple spokesman confirmed the deal, telling the "WSJ" that the company "buys smaller technology companies from time to time” and generally doesn’t discuss its plans. Apple defends its product pricing in Australia
This week Apple, Microsoft and Adobe appeared before a federal parliamentary committee hearing into the pricing of their products in Australia and defended the high prices that Australian consumers are paying for their products, reports "ABC" (http://tinyurl.com/b8u72pk). Labor backbencher Ed Husic has accused some information technology companies of "ripping off" Australian consumers. However, Apple Australia Vice President Tony King defended his company's Australian prices . He said part of the reason was higher costs charged by the entertainment industry for content destined for the Australian market. "Price considerations must go well beyond simply looking up a currency exchange rate," King said."For example, Apple must consider differences between countries in product costs, freight charges, local sales taxes, levies, import duties, channel economics, competition and local laws regarding advertised prices."

Apple to iOS developers: drop UDID, support Retina displays
In a note on its Apple developer website (https://developer.apple.com/news/), Apple tells iOS app developers that it will no longer allow apps to use the unique device identifier or UDID after May 1. Also, all apps must be Retina display ready. Apple tells developers to "please update your apps and servers to associate users with the Vendor or Advertising identifiers introduced in iOS 6." Apple's Podcast app gets iCloud syncing, more
Apple has updated its Podcasts app, adding an iCloud syncing feature, as well as the ability to create custom stations and On-The-Go playlists. With custom stations, you can compile your favorite podcasts into lists that will be automatically updated when new episodes are released. You can choose whether those stations begin playing with the newest or oldest unplayed episode. The app also stores stations in iCloud, updating immediately across all of a user's devices.

Apple has rolled out a new two-step verification service for iCloud and Apple ID users, reports "9to5Mac" (www.9to5Mac.com). This functionality greatly enhances the security of Apple accounts because it requires users to use a trusted device and an extra security code. This security code can be sent via SMS or via the Find my iPhone iOS app (if it is installed). Users can now setup two-step authentication on their devices via the Apple ID website. Apple top smartphone maker when it comes to customer satisfaction
Overall satisfaction among smartphone customers increases significantly as manufacturers continue to improve styling, feature sets, usability and software, according to new data from J.D. Power and Associates. For the ninth consecutive study, Apple ranks highest among manufacturers of smartphones in customer satisfaction. Apple achieves a score of 855 and performs particularly well in physical design and ease of operation.  The research group's studies measure satisfaction with traditional wireless handsets and smartphones among customers who have used their current mobile device for less than one year. Satisfaction is measured in several key factors. In order of importance, the key factors of overall satisfaction with traditional mobile phones are performance (29%); ease of operation (26%); physical design (24%); and features (21%). Artlandia brings SymmetryMill to SketchUp
Artlandia has released a new plug-in that makes Artlandia's cloud-based pattern design editor, SymmetryMill, available as an interactive texture editor in SketchUp. Samsung hopes to see nullification of more Apple infringement...
With 40% of the billion-dollar patent infringement verdict against it put on hold, Samsung is now asking for the court to appoint a new jury to determine whether 14 of its products infringed Apple's products at all, reports "AppleInsider" (www.appleinsider.com). This could lead to a lower overall monetary judgment. This is all part of the ongoing, global legal battle. Apple and Samsung have filed more than 30 lawsuits against each other across four continents. For example, Apple alleges that Samsung copied the slide-to-unlock technology of its iPhone and iPad devices.

Dr. Web reports new adware trojans for the Mac
Russian anti-virus company Doctor Web is reporting that adware for Mac OS X has been increasing in number since the beginning of 2013. Trojan.Yontoo.1 is the most prominent of them. It can download and install an adware browser plugin in an infected system, according to Dr. Web (http://tinyurl.com/c87upvm). According to the company's analysts, the trend towards a growing number of adware for various platforms has persisted from early 2013. Criminals profit from affiliate ad network programs, and their interest in users of Macs "grows day by day."

Beauty Box Photo skin retouching plug-in gets a speed boost

Version 3.0 sports a speed increase by using OpenCL, a technology that runs on ATI and Nvidia graphics cards. Intertrust Technologies files infringement lawsuit against Apple
Intertrust Technologies, an early pioneer in digital copyright protection jointly owned by Sony and Royal Philips Electronics has filed a lawsuit against Apple for alleging infringing 15 patents related to security, reports "The Wall Street Journal" (http://tinyurl.com/bo47tfd). The lawsuit covers most of Apple’s products and services, including the iPhone, iPad, Mac computers, Apple TV,  iTunes, iCloud, and the Apple App Store. Intertrust says it has a successful record of licensing its technology, with licensees including Adobe,  Nokia, Samsung, HTC and LG Electronics.

Dept. of Defense to purportedly buy 65,000 iOS devices
The U.S. Dept. of Defense plans to purchase 650,000 iOS devices, reports "Electronista" (http://tinyurl.com/bu4mzpp). That number includes 120,000 iPads, 100,000 iPad minis, 200,000 iPod touches with the remaining 210,000 filled by various iPhones. Grewal in San Jose, California, invited plaintiffs’ lawyers in the case to pursue sanctions against Apple after saying that the company’s document production “has more than doubled since the court got involved” in policing information-sharing obligations. The judge questioned Apple about e-mails or documents from employees that the company turned up only after the court ordered a review of its document-production process. Adobe's software subscription model looking successful
Adobe has raised its full-year adjusted earnings forecast after reporting first-quarter results above Wall Street estimates as more customers chose its subscription-based model, reports "Reuters" (http://tinyurl.com/cpxx7tu). The company raised its full-year adjusted earnings forecast to approximately US$1.45 per share from about $1.40 per share, above analysts' estimates of $1.41 per share. Adobe has been moving to a web-based subscription service Creative Cloud since last year from a licensing model. "We're seeing higher-than-expected conversion rate to the paid model and that's a very positive sign. What that implies is that customers are happy," Edward Jones analyst Josh Olson told "Reuters."

Apple has hired Adobe Chief Technical Officer Kevin Lynch. He'll serve as the company's vice president of technology, and report to wireless hardware/chip engineering chief Bob Mansfield. Wacom introduces new 13-inch interactive pen display
Wacom has announced the Cintiq 13HD (http://cintiq13hd.wacom.com/en), a new addition to its lineup of Cintiq interactive pen displays. It combines a 13-inch HD screen, an adjustable stand and an improved Pro Pen. The Cintiq 13HD works with both Mac and PC.computers. Its stand is optimized for use in a choice of four settings -- flat, 22 degrees, 35 degrees and 50 degrees. The screen displays 16.7 million colors and boasts 1920x1080 resolution are particularly beneficial to those working with intricate graphics or images. As with all Wacom interactive pen displays, the Cintiq 13HD enables users to create directly on screen. It offers 2,048 levels of pressure sensitivity, as well as tilt recognition.
