Researcher discloses OS X privilege escalation vulnerability
German researcher Stefan Esser from security audit firm SektionEins has disclosed a privilege escalation vulnerability in Mac OS X that's yet to be fixed in the latest release of the operating system, according to ZDNet (http://tinyurl.com/pa6n8h8).
He says the security flaw affects OS X 10.10.x and relates to new features added by the iPad and iPhone maker in the newest evolutions of the OS, Yosemite and El Capitan. The new features exploitable by the vulnerability are based upon the dynamic linker dyld and environment variable DYLD_PRINT_TO_FILE, which enables error logging to an arbitrary file.
Esser says it's "unclear" whether Apple knows about the security flaw or not, as it has already been patched in the first beta versions of OS X El Capitan 10.11, but not in the current release of OS X 10.10.4 or in the current beta of OS X 10.10.5, which has been released to public beta testers.

Canalys: Apple ships 4.2 million watches
Apple became the world’s leading vendor of wearable bands in the second quarter of 2015, according to Canalys (www.canalys.com) estimates.
With 4.2 million shipments, it easily overtook Fitbit, Xiaomi and all the smart watch vendors, despite the Apple Watch’s significantly higher pricing. Apple has done an excellent job designing its WatchKit SDK [software development kit], which it delivered "quickly and comprehensively," says the research group.
Native WatchKit extensions provide a capable developer platform without sacrificing battery life. But early sales were hindered due to two factors. Firstly, Apple missed the fourth quarter 2014 holiday season. Secondly, supply constraints stalled shipments for the first couple months after launch.
"The Apple Watch is the most sophisticated smart watch to date, and it has proved popular with Apple fans worldwide," says Chris Jones, vice president and principal analyst at Canalys. "But Apple and other vendors still face important challenges...

Apple bag search lawsuit certified as class action
Apple Store employees who sued Apple over bag searches at the iPhone maker's 52 brick and mortar outlets in California had their case certified as a class-action by a federal judge, U.S. District Judge William Alsup in San Francisco, reports Reuters (http://tinyurl.com/o587qwr).
It's part of a 2013 lawsuit alleging Apple should compensate thousands of store employees for the time taken to search their bags to ensure they did not steal any merchandise. Reuters notes that Apple had argued in court filings that the case wasn't suitable for class action status because not all store managers conducted bag searches, and any searches that did occur took a tiny amount of time which don't deserve compensation. Alsup ruled that those issues could be litigated at trial.

Intel's 10nm processors pushed back to 2017
During a conference call with journalists to talk about the company's latest quarterly financial numbers, Intel CEO Brian Krzanich said the vendor will add a third 14-nanometer processor—dubbed "Kaby Lake"—to its roadmap, pushing back the timetable for its 10nm processor to the second half of 2017, reports eWeek (http://tinyurl.com/n9w892e).
"This is similar to what happened on the 14-nanometer," Krzanich said. "On all of these technologies, each one has its own recipe of complexity and difficulty. [The move from] 14-nanometer to 10-nanometer [is the] same thing that happened from 22-nanometer to 14-nanometer. The lithography is continuing to get more difficult as you try and scale and the number of multipattern steps you have to do is increasing."
Intel will try to get back to a two-year schedule, but company officials will have to continue to evaluate the situation as the process moves from 10nm to 7nm and lower, Krzanich said.

Apple has 92% of operating profit of the world's eight...
Apple collected 92% of the operating profit of the world's top eight smartphone companies in the first quarter of the year, reports the Canaccord Genuity financial firm — as noted by the Wall Street Journal (on.wsj.com/1SjEjmY). That's up from 65% a year earlier.
Samsung took 15% in this year's period. The reason why Apple and Samsung earned over 100% combined is because some rivals only broke even or lost money.
Apple's dominance of profit share comes despite the company selling under 20% of smartphones and because its devices are much more expensive than those of its competitors.

GlaxoSmithKline and Purdue Pharma considering use of Apple'...
Pharmaceutical giants like GlaxoSmithKline and Purdue Pharma want to use Apple’s open source ResearchKit platform for gathering medical research data via the iPhone, according to BuzzFeed News (http://tinyurl.com/qj2pttv).
GlaxoSmithKline, one of the world’s largest drug developers, told the publication that it's "currently working on integrating (ResearchKit) into clinical trials and planning to start in coming months." Purdue Pharma — a privately held, multibillion-dollar drug developer best known for OxyContin painkillers — told BuzzFeed News that it’s in the early stages of exploring whether Apple’s new tool for research data collection can be used as part of its own drug R&D efforts.
ResearchKit is a software framework designed for medical and health research that helps doctors, scientists and other researchers gather data more frequently and more accurately from participants using mobile devices. The open source framework allows any medical researcher to take advantage of...
IDC: PC market continues to decline (but not the Mac)
Worldwide PC shipments totaled 66.1 million units in the second quarter of 2015 (2Q15), according to the International Data Corp. (IDC). This represented a year-on-year decline of -11.8%, about 1% below projections for the quarter — although Apple's Mac continues to do well.
The slow PC shipments were largely anticipated as a result of stronger year-ago shipments relating to end of support for windows XP as well as channels reducing inventory ahead of the release of Windows 10, according to IDC (www.idc.com). In addition, weaker or changing exchange rates for foreign currencies have effectively increased PC prices in many markets, thereby reducing purchasing power and also complicating investment planning, adds the research group.
"Although the second quarter decline in PC shipments was significant, and slightly more than expected, the overall trend fits with expectations," says Loren Loverde, vice president, Worldwide PC Trackers & Forecasting. "We continue to expect low to mid-...

IBM Research Alliance produces industry’s first 7nm node test...
An alliance led by IBM Research (www.ibm.com) says it has made working versions of ultradense computer chips, with roughly four times the capacity of today’s most powerful chips.
The industry’s first 7nm (nanometer) node test chips with functioning transistors was accomplished in partnership with Global Foundries and Samsung at SUNY Polytechnic Institute’s Colleges of Nanoscale Science and Engineering. The development could result in the ability to place more than 20 billion tiny switches -- transistors -- on the fingernail-sized chips that power everything from smartphones to spacecraft.
To achieve the higher performance, lower power and scaling benefits promised by 7nm technology, researchers had to bypass conventional semiconductor manufacturing approaches. Among the novel processes and techniques pioneered by the IBM Research alliance were a number of industry-first innovations, most notably Silicon Germanium (SiGe) channel transistors and Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) lithography...

Browser-based payments on Android smartphones have been growing roughly in parallel with the iPhone since September 2014, according to Adyen. Mobile’s total share of online payments is up from 27.2% in the first quarter of 2015 to 28.7% in quarter two.
