Apple expands lawsuit against HTC
Apple has expanded its lawsuit against HTC. In a complaint filed Monday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, Apple accuses HTC of infringing two additional patents and re-asserts its allegations of infringement of two others, reports "All Things Digital" (http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100623/apple-sues-htc-over-two-more...). Apple filed in March against HTC for infringing on 20 Apple patents related to the iPhone's user interface, underlying architecture and hardware. The lawsuit was filed concurrently with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) and in U.S. District Court in Delaware. As many as 10 of those violations involve the Nexus One, Apple said in a complaint submitted to the ITC. The Delaware lawsuit, however, didn't specify the HTC-made phones that allegedly violated Apple's patents. Last month HTC, in turn, filed a complaint with the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) to halt the importation and sale of the iPhone, iPad and...

The iPhone 3G went on sale at 7:00 a.m. at the flagship store of Softbank Mobile in downtown Tokyo. More than 500 people queued outside Apple's store in the Ginza district. The iPhone currently represents just 4% of the EU5 (U.K., France, Germany, Spain, Italy) mobile market, but 18% of the overall EU5 smartphone market. MoneyWorks releases free MYOB file converter
The maker of MoneyWorks, Cognito Software, has released a free utility (http://www.cognito.co.nz/myobgone.php) that solves the problem MYOB users experience when they want to change their accounting software, then struggle to extract the necessary financial data. It's common for organizations to have outgrown their accounting package, but have concerns about the difficulty of moving to a new solution and the accuracy of the data that is transferred. This can form an impasse that traps users in an uncomfortable situation, where they're restricted by a system that no longer meets their needs and provides inadequate management information. For MYOB users, exporting complete data is very difficult. For example, when they try to export their products/items list no stock on-hand information is included. Previously, the only way to for MYOB users to change systems was by running reports and manually re-entering the information. Cognito has solved this problem. The free file converter will...

'iFixIt' tears down the iPhone 4
The gang at "iFixIt' have torn down the iPhone 4. They say Apple definitely spent time giving the phone a thorough makeover, meticulously changing every little facet. You can find the complete teardown at http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPhone-4-Teardown/3130/1 . However, here are some of the highlights: ° Like the iPhone 3G and 3GS, there are two silver Phillips screws at the bottom of the phone. But removing these screws releases the rear case instead of the front glass, giving you immediate access to the battery. ° Unfortunately, the LCD panel is very securely glued to the glass and digitizer. If you break the glass, you'll have to replace the glass, digitizer, and LCD as a single assembly. ° The 3.7V, 1420 mAh Li-Polymer battery is not soldered in place, and very easy to remove. ° The iPhone 4 sports two cameras -- a 1.3 MP front-facer, and a 5 MP beauty on the back. Both are located on their own independent boards, making it possible to physically remove the cameras without...

More than 55 million smartphones ship in first quarter of 2010
The world’s smartphone markets continued to build on their strong 4Q-2009 performance in the first three months of 2010. According to the latest ABI Research (http://www.abiresearch.com) data, a little more than 55 million smartphones shipped during the quarter. In fact that represents a drop of about one million compared to the fourth quarter of 2009, but seasonal sales cycles always produce lower results in the first quarter of any year compared to the previous quarter; according to senior analyst Michael Morgan, “Normally we would see a much greater decline in shipments in the first quarter," he says. "The fact that the drop was so relatively small highlights the continuing dynamic growth of the smartphone market." Much of the fastest growth is being seen in markets previously little penetrated by expensive, cutting-edge smartphones, according to ABI Research. With new less expensive models becoming available, the global market is becoming much more diverse. An example is provided...

Do e-Readers have a chance against the iPad?
By Andrew Eisner (Eisner is director of Community and Content for Retrevo.com, a site that does research on electronic shopping). Amazon claims they sell more Kindles on their site than any other product but just to cover the bases they also offer a very popular iPhone and iPad app. Barnes and Noble also offers an app. As the iPad continues to build momentum as a multi-purpose media player and e-Reader, consumers also have more and more e-Readers to choose from. This Retrevo Pulse study looks at e-Readers and iPads: who's planning to buy one and what could help sell more of them. Although an overwhelming majority of respondents (64%) said they have no plans to buy an e-Reader, we were surprised to see almost 20% say they were planning to buy an e-Reader, and that doesn't include iPads. Although, it appears consumers still want Kindles and other e-Readers, it looks like the iPad could grab a substantial share of the market. The study revealed almost one-third (8% of 28%) of the people...

Study: iPhone 3GS 20% more reliable than 3G
SquareTrade, an independent warranty provider, has completed their second annual study on failure rates for Apple iPhones. Based on data compiled from over 25,000 3G and 3GS iPhones covered by SquareTrade since 2008, the study found that 25.6% of the devices experienced a failure in the first two years, compared to 33% in 2009.     The improvement in iPhone reliability was driven largely by the 3GS model’s substantially fewer touchscreen failures than the 3G. Of the total failures, 18% encountered damage due to accidents and another 7.5% were hardware malfunctions. When the data is projected out three years, up to 40 percent of 3GS iPhones are expected to experience some type of failure.   Other findings from the iPhone study:   ° The two-year malfunction rate (non-accident) decreased from 10% in June 2009 to 7.5 %. ° The two-year accidental damage rate decreased from 21% in June 2009 to 18%. ° More than two-thirds of accidental damage was due to dropping the device, most resulting...
