Apple web page extols virtues of HTML5
Apple has posted a new web page,"HTML5 and web standards" (http://www.apple.com/html5/), praising the virtues of HTML5, which Apple (or at least Steve Jobs) prefers over Adobe's Flash.
HTML5 is being developed as the next major revision of HTML (HyperText Markup Language), the core markup language of the web. It's touted as the next standard for HTML 4.01, XHTML 1.0 and DOM Level 2 HTML and is designed to to reduce the need for proprietary plug-in-based rich internet application (RIA) technologies such as Adobe Flash, Microsoft Silverlight, and Sun JavaFX.
"Every new Apple mobile device and every new Mac -- along with the latest version of Apple’s Safari web browser -- supports web standards including HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript," Apple says on the HTML5 page. "These web standards are open, reliable, highly secure, and efficient. They allow web designers and developers to create advanced graphics, typography, animations, and transitions. Standards aren’t add-ons to the web. They are...
Alas, no iPhone-iPad tethering
If you were hoping to take advantage of AT&T's recently announced iPhone tethering capability in the U.S. to provide an Internet connection for their iPad, well, you're gonna be disappointed.
Responding to a question posed on "TechFlash" (http://www.techflash.com/) by Steve Rubel, an AT&T spokeswoman told the publication via email that it won't be possible to tether the iPhone to the iPad to share Internet access with the Apple slate. Rubel says that's because the iPad doesn't have any USB ports to enable a wired connection between the devices.
So what about Bluetooth? Apple own support page says the iPhone allows wireless Bluetooth tethering. But in another "TechFlash" comment, Mac guru Glenn Fleishman notes that he "discovered in testing that the iPad includes the Bluetooth profile required for tethering, but it is not enabled."
Tethering is using a cell phone as a modem for your laptop or other device. Creating a connection either with cables or wirelessly "tethers" your...

Apple drops to third in 2010 RescueCom Reliability Report
RescueCom's Computer Reliability Report starts out on a high note in 2010, with all five leading manufacturers putting up superior reliability scores to last year's averages. Apple, last year's overall leader, improved its reliability score, but that still wasn't good enough to maintain the top spot in the first quarter of 2010.
Instead Apple dropped to third place. IBM/Lenovo decidedly took first place improving their score over 200 points from their average last year. Asus also posted significant gains and took second place. Rounding out the top five were Toshiba and HP/Compaq, respectively.
The report looks measures computer reliability on two fundamentals. The first being the quality of the components and software used in manufacturing the computer. The second is the after-sale support the manufacturer provides to its customers.
How exactly does RescueCom measure these fundamentals to calculate an unbiased reliability score for each manufacturer? The number of computers an...

Apple tops 2010 Supply Chain Top 25 list for third time
AMR Research has released the findings from its sixth annual Supply Chain Top 25. The goal of the Supply Chain Top 25 research initiative is to raise awareness of the supply chain discipline and how it impacts the business.
Apple held onto the number one position for the third year in a row. This is the first time a company has been ranked number one for three consecutive years in the Supply Chain Top 25 research. Analysts attribute Apple's success to its ability to consistently bring both operational excellence and innovation excellence to bear in some of the most competitive markets in the world. Apple has broken new ground in transforming a supply chain into a value chain by starting with the consumer experience and designing its network to serve that master first and foremost, according to Kevin O’Marah, group vice president at AMR Research.

Retrevo: can anything stop Apple and the iPad?
If the rumors are true and all goes according to plan, Apple CEO Steve Jobs will take the stage at the WWDC next week and present the latest version of the iPhone. The latest Retrevo Pulse study asked over 1,000 people (non-Retrevo users) what phone they planned to buy this year and over 20% of the respondents indicated an iPhone. If that number holds up it could be another good year for Apple and the iPhone.
Can Apple create that same iPhone momentum with the iPad? Are we looking at another Apple dominated product category like the iPod did with MP3 players? Microsoft tried unsuccessfully to generate interest in a tablet almost a decade ago. If timing is everything, is the timing right for Apple's iPad? The Retrevo Pulse study also looked at what, if anything, could possibly hinder Apple's runaway success in the tablet category.
When Retrevo asked consumers what would prevent them from buying an iPad, of those who don't already own one or plan on buying one, the most common answer...

CR: most iPhone users likely to pay no more with new AT&T...
The average iPhone user should pay the same or less for service under the new data plans announced by AT&T, according to a "Consumer Reports" analysis. The new plans replace a US$30-a-month flat fee for unlimited data service with plans that start at $15 per month for a limited amount of data.
The reason: most iPhone users typically use less data per month than the amounts that would trigger a $30-plus bill under the new pricing schemes, says "CR." The average iPhone user consumes 273 MB of data per month, according to the unique data on iPhone usage reported a few months ago. More than half of owners use less than 200MB per month, that data reveals. The new $15 iPhone plan provides 200MB per month, and so would cut data costs in half for the majority of iPhone owners.
Under the new plans, those who use more than 200MB in any month can add an extra 200MB for an additional $15 -- taking the bill for that month to $30, or the same as they’re paying under the current unlimited plan....

Authorities examining evidence in missing iPhone prototype case
Authorities have begun examining the computers, server, and other electronic gear seized from a Gizmodo editor as part of the investigation into a missing iPhone prototype, reports "CNET" (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-20006676-37.html).
Stephen Wagstaffe, chief deputy district attorney for San Mateo County, told "CNET" on Wednesday that a court there had appointed a "special master" to search the items seized from the home of Jason Chen in late April. The court has asked the special master to collect only information that pertains to Gizmodo's dealings with an iPhone prototype that the blog purchased for IS$5,000.
In March, an Apple employee lost contact with a prototype of an upcoming iPhone. He either lost it or it was stolen while he was visiting a bar in Redwood City, California.
