Apple, Google to drop all patent lawsuits
Apple and Google have agreed to drop all current patent infringement lawsuits between them, the two companies said in a joint statement on Friday. They've also agreed to work together in some areas of patent reform.
However, they have NOT agreed to cross-license each other’s patents, notes the IDG News Service (http://tinyurl.com/m88ru6t). Apple filed a lawsuit with the U.S. International Trade Commission in 2010 against Motorola Mobility, which was subsequently acquired by Google. Google has since agreed to sell the smartphone business to Lenovo, but the deal hasn't been finalized.
A lot of the lawsuits Apple has filed against other smartphone makers, including Samsung, involve Google’s Android operating system. The Friday announcement doesn't affect the Apple-Samsung lawsuit, however, notes the IDG News Service.
Japanese court says Samsung can seek minimal damages from Apple
A Japanese court has ruled Samsung can seek minimal damages from Apple for patent infringement, reports "NewsAsia" () The country's Japan's Intellectual Property High Court ruled that Samsung could claim 9.96 million yen (approximately $98,000) from its US arch-rival for use of Samsung's data transmission technology, found to have been used in Apple's iPhone 4 and iPad 2.
The ruling amended a lower court decision in February last year that Samsung had failed to negotiate properly with Apple over the use of the technology. However, the high court says Samsung can claim damages from Apple "within what amounts to patent licence fees" for the two products, while rejecting the South Korean firm's demand for an injunction that would prevent the manufacture and sale of some of Apple's smartphones.
This is all part of the ongoing, global legal battle. Apple and Samsung have filed more than 30 lawsuits against each other across four continents. For example, Apple alleges that Samsung copied...

Amazon's online sales dwarf the competition
According to data from e-commerce research firm Internet Retailer, Amazon remains miles ahead of the competition in the online retail space. In 2013, Amazon's online retail sales amounted to US$67.9 billion, more than the next nine largest e-retailers combined.
Surprisingly, the second largest player in the e-commerce game is not a large traditional retailer such as Wal-Mart or Staples, but Apple. The iPhone-maker reportedly sold goods and services worth $18.3 billion through its website, the App Store and the iTunes Store in the past year.
Amazon's increasingly dominant position in the e-commerce market is owed largely to the company's aggressive growth strategy. Under CEO Jeff Bezos, Amazon has become known to reinvest most of its earnings, which is why the company has yet to turn a meaningful profit. The accompanying chart is courtesy of Statistica.com.

Mergers shake up U.S. pay-TV market
AT&T is reportedly in advanced talks to acquire satellite TV provider DirecTV in a deal that could be worth US$50 billion. DirecTV would add roughly 20 million video subscribers to the 5.7 million that currently subscribe to AT&T's own U-Verse video service.
With a total of 26 million TV customers, the new entity would rival a Comcast and Time Warner Cable, whose planned merger is currently under investigation. Comcast and Time Warner Cable currently serve a combined total of 34 million customers, but Comcast has agreed to divest approximately 3.9 million video customers to Charter Communications in case the merger goes through.
Both deals would further consolidate the telecom and Pay-TV industry as more and more consumers are opting for so-called triple or quad play offers that combine telephone, broadband, TV and wireless services. The graphic is courtesy of Statistica.com.
