Analyst ups his sales estimates for, well, all Apple products
Kaufman Brothers analyst Shaw Wu said in a note to clients -- as reported by "Barron's (http://blogs.barrons.com/techtraderdaily/2010/12/16/apple-kaufman-ups-ta...) -- that he's raised his price target on shares of Apple to US $395 from $380. He says momentum for the iPhone and iPad appear better recently than he’d predicted. Wu also says Black Friday shopping madness has carried over, leading to shortages of the iPod and the MacBook Air. For the fiscal quarter that ends this month, the analyst now sees: Apple selling 4.2 million Macs, up from 4 million; 6.1 million iPads (up from 5.5 million), 16 million iPhones (up from 15.5 million), and 17 million iPods, up from 16 million.

Beta of DEVONagent 3.0 available
DEVONtechnologies has released version 3.0 of its intelligent Internet research assistant DEVONagent as public beta. It comes with a reworked user interface, better browsing capabilities, new and updated plugins, and is based on a new technology foundation. DEVONagent 3.0 supports wildcards, new advanced search operators such as "OPT," fuzzy searching, and natural phrase matching. Searches can be saved and recalled later. New scanners and plugins have been added, e.g. for Bing, the App Store, Unfolding News, or DEVONthink Pro Office. All other plugins, scanners, and pre-fab search sets have been updated. Unsupported search engines can be added using the new Plugin Assistant. DEVONagent now also supports PDF, PostScript, OpenOffice, Oracle Open Office, RTF, and Microsoft Word documents. Aqua Connect Terminal Server to be optimized for Mac Pro Server
Aqua Connect (http://www.aquaconnect.net), providers of an enterprise grade Mac terminal service, has announce plans to optimize performance of Aqua Connect Terminal Server on the Mac Pro Server. This announcement comes after Apple announced last month that they will no longer offer the Xserve line of servers starting in February 2011. The discontinuation of the Xserve puts the Mac Pro Server at the forefront of Apple’s server technology, according to Renee Mehrian, executive vice president of Aqua Connect. The Mac Pro Server provides features that are more suited for Mac terminal services and enterprise customers, but also brings some new challenges to the field. Learning Tree introduces new iPhone/iPad programming course
Learning Tree International has announced the introduction of a new course entitled "iPhone® and iPad Programming: A Comprehensive Introduction." In this four-day course, instructors will teach attendees how to create professional iPhone and iPad applications using Objective-C and the iPhone Software Development Kit. According to the folks at Learning Tree, attendees gain the skills to design and test user interfaces with Interface Builder and the iOS Simulator, display data effectively with interactive table views, and apply navigation tools and techniques to improve user experience. Hitachi ships one-disk, 7mm, 500GB hard drive
Hitachi (http://www.hitachigst.com) has announced its new 500GB, 5,400 RPM Travelstar Z5K500 drive -- a one-disk, 7 millimeter (mm) z-height hard disk drive (HDD). The drives feature 1.8 watts read/write power and 0.55W low power idle, and purportedly deliver a nearly silent operation at 1.9 idle / 2.1 seek bels. All Travelstar Z5K500 drives feature an 8MB cache and a Serial ATA 3Gb per second interface. They are also Hitachi’s second generation Advanced Format drive, which increases the physical sector size on HDDs from 512 bytes to 4,096 (4K) bytes, thereby improving drive capacity and error correction capabilities. All Hitachi Z-series 7mm drives feature common connectors and mounting points for standard integration into existing systems. They feature optional bulk data encryption (BDE) for hard drive level data security. The 500GB G-Technology G-Drive slim will be shipping to retailers in early 2011. Pricing hasn't been announced.

It's an utility featuring infographic display of the disk space usage, simple cleanup function, hard disk fault prediction, and temperature monitoring to prevent overheating. iPhone now in fifth place in Japanese market
Apple has risen to fifth place in the market ranking list for cellphone makers operating in Japan for the first time in the July-September period with its share coming to 12.2%, a market research institute says -- as reported by "The Mainichi Daily News" (http://mdn.mainichi.jp/mdnnews/business/news/20101214p2g00m0bu021000c.html). The iPhone moved up from seventh place in the April-June quarter in the market led by Sharp Corp., whose latest share was 18.8%, according to IDC Japan. Apple's share broke through the 10% line for the first time, with iPhone's shipment coming to 1.06 million units in the quarter, while overall cellphone shipments stood at 8.66 million units, up 18.9% from a year earlier.

Apple has released LED Cinema Display Firmware Update 1.0 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1338) for Mac OS X 10.6 ("Snow Leopard"). You can obtain it via the Software Updates component of Mac OS X's Systems Preferences. This Firmware Update addresses intermittent audio issues some users have experienced while using the 27-inch LED Cinema Display. Apple has released iTunes 10.1.1. Poster is new photo/video uploading software for Mac OS X

iBooks 1.2 adds Collections feature, more
Apple has updated its iBooks app for iOS devices to version 1.2. The new version introduces Collections and lets you group books or PDFs together. By default, Apple includes Books and PDFs collections, but you can add and edit 'em as you wish. There's also AirPrint support, support for full illustrated books and a tweaked icon. Apple is leading vendor of all-in-one computer sales
Sales for all-in-one computers are on the rise, as is usual during the holiday season, and Apple's iMac is the top selling computer in this category. "DigiTimes" (http://www.digitimes.com/NewsShow/NewsSearch.asp?DocID=PD000000000000000...), quoting "industry sources" indicate that Apple is the leading vendor of all-in-ones, accounting for almost 40% of the total market in 2010. Quanta Computer is the leading maker of all-in-one computers in 2010, accounting for 60% of the original equipment manufacturer market. Its clients include Apple and Hewlett-Packard. Second-place Pegatron Technology is mainly making all-in-one computers for Asustek Computer. Canada's government gives thumbs-up to the iBookstore
The federal government in Canada declared on Tuesday that having a Canadian version of Apple Inc.'s iBookstore would be of net benefit to Canada, reports the "Leader-Post" (http://www.leaderpost.com/news/iBookstore+gets+thumb+Canada/3978206/stor...). In September, then-governor general Michaelle Jean ordered the government to review the digital bookstore's Canadian iteration to ensure it posed no risk to the nation's cultural identity. Stores carrying Apple products burglarized
Stores carrying Apple products should be on guard. Burglaries of such establishments seems to be on the rise. A security camera caught this smash and grab robbery at an apple store in Greenwich, Connecticut, reports "NECN" (http://www.necn.com/12/15/10/New-England-Apple-stores-step-up-securit/la...). Thousands of dollars in merchandiser were stolen. Several stores selling Apple products in Vermont and New Hampshire have also been targeted recently, notes "NECN." When it comes to great employers, the employees know best. Glassdoor.com, a jobs and career community where people share workplace insights, has just released the third annual Employees' Choice Awards, listing the top 50 "Best Places to Work" based on surveys collected from U.S.-based employees in 2010. Apple placed number 20 on the list. The top five Best Places to Work, according to employees, are: Facebook, Southwest Airlines, Bain & Company, General Mills and Edelman. Of the 50 employers honored, 16 have been on the list for each of the last three years, and 21 are debuting on the list this year, including Facebook. iPads, iPod touches increasingly incorporated into classrooms
iPads and iPod touches are increasingly common in classrooms across North America, it seems. iPads are being provided to students at several Bay Area public and private schools this year, including Hillbrook, which claims to be the only K-8 school in America using tablet computers in class and sending them home, reports the "San Jose Mercury News" (http://www.mercurynews.com/top-stories/ci_16860666?nclick_check=1). At Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose -- which introduced 32 iPads into the classroom this fall -- the devices are used only in class. And Stanford's School of Medicine gave 92 iPads outright to its first-year students this September. Analyst: Apple will sell nine million Verizon iPhones in 2011
Apple will sell nine million Verizon iPhones in 2011, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster told clients a note, as reported by "Business Insider" (http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-will-sell-9-million-verizon-iphones...). What's more, he says that estimate may be conservation. Munster thinks that Apple could sell closer to 20 million iPhones at Verizon next year. The analyst thinks Verizon will activate 25 million smartphones next year. His estimate of nine million would only represent 36% of all activations for the year. Note that there's been no official word on if or when Verizon will carry the iPhone.

BBEdit for Mac OS X gets maintenance update
Bare Bones Software (http://www.barebones.com) has released BBEdit 9.6.2, an update to its HTML and text editor. It fixes reported issues and adds syntax coloring and function navigation support for JSON. A refined Translate command simplifies the process of converting documents between HTML and plain text, according to Rich Siegel, founder and CEO of Bare Bones Software. BBEdit 9.6 also includes support for directory-specific settings and a new command-line option for creating projects. The update is available free of charge to all registered BBEdit 9 customers. For new users it has a suggested retail price of US$125. Any registered owner of BBEdit prior to version 9.x can upgrade for US$30.

Raidon launches internal, 2.5-inch SSD storage
Raidon Technology (http://www.RAIDON.com.tw) has announced two internal 2.5-inch iR2420-2S-S2 and iS2420-2S-S2 storage device with aluminum textures and a tray ejection design. They accommodate two 2.5-inch SSD or SATAII hard drives that offer quick installation. They're the size of a 3.5-inch and can be installed in any 3.5-inch HDD slot in a computer.   The tray ejection design can be installed SSD or HDD without any screws. The upgrade update lets users add email recipients at delivery time. Apple updates printer drivers
Apple has released updated printer drivers for various Canon, Fuji and Lexmark printers. You can download them via the Software Updates component of the Mac OS X Systems Preferences app. By default, Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard installs software supporting the printers currently used by your Mac (if available), nearby printers on your network, and popular printer and scanner models. Apple releases Apple TV firmware update
Apple has released a firmware update for the latest Apple TV. The update will appear automatically for Apple TV owners. There are no release notes or other info on what the firmware update entails. The only thing we know is that the moniker of the update goes from iOS 4.2 Build 8C150 to iOS 4.2.1 Build 8C154.

Mac sales surge in November
Mac sales surged last month, according to new data from the NPD research group (http://www.npd.com). Sales rose 19%, and the new MacBook line has sold well. Apple is also being adopted by more businesses, notes "24/7 Wall Street" (http://247wallst.com/2010/12/14/apple-and-lenovo-take-pc-growth-lead/). Toshiba saw November sales improve 22% improvement over October and Lenovo saw a 69% gain. On the other hand, HP saw a 15% dip in sales.

Analyst expects 'smart TV' from Apple by 2012
In a note to clients -- as reported by "Forbes" (http://blogs.forbes.com/ericsavitz/2010/12/14/apple-off-morgan-stanley-b...) -- Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty said she removed Apple from her firm’s best idea list, noting that the stock is up 28% over the past six month, twice the gain for the S&P 500 over the same span. However, she keeps an US$375 price target on the shares. She also sees lots of new goodies from Apple over the next two years. For 2011, she expects a Verizon iPhone, the iPhone 5 in July and lower priced iPads by April. For 2012, she expects Apple to unveiled a "smart "TV, a redesigned iPad and and LTE iPhone.

First iAd for iPad is for 'Tron Legacy'
The first iAd for iPad will launch Tuesday for the upcoming Disney movie, "Tron Legacy." This is a preview of what Apple's mobile ad format will look like on the iPad, and the only iAd planned for Apple's tablet for this year, an Apple spokesman told "Advertising Age" (http://adage.com/digital/article?article_id=147660). US soldiers may get choice of free iPhone or Android phone
The Army wants to issue every soldier an iPhone or Android cell phone and pay every soldier's monthly phone bill, reports the "Army TImes" (http://www.armytimes.com/news/2010/12/army-smart-phones-for-soldiers-121...). Lt. Gen. Michael Vane, director of the Army Capabilities Integration Center, said the Army would issue these smart phones just like any other piece of equipment a soldier receives, the article adds.
