DriveSavers equipped to recover new Apple Fusion Drive
DriveSavers Data Recovery, which specializes in data recovery services, says the company now offers data recovery services for Apple’s new Fusion Drive.
In October, Apple unveiled the Fusion Drive as a new storage option for Mac mini and iMac computers, along with Macs running MacOS 10.8.2 to combine the performance of solid-state storage with the higher capacity of a hard drive. DriveSavers engineers tested the drive and developed new proprietary methods and techniques to recover data specifically for the new hybrid storage solution should an unthinkable failure occur.
"Recovering data from the Fusion Drive is not for the weak at heart," says Chris Bross, strategic technology alliance manager. "It’s a complex storage solution that combines two completely different technologies to give Apple customers more speed with higher capacity. Our years of experience working with Apple products, Flash technology and leading storage manufacturers gives us the edge to innovate and quickly...
Wireless power for mobile devices to be worth $5 billion by 2020
The ease and convenience of transmitting power via plug-free and, in many cases, contactless charging is fueling the adoption of wireless power for a wide range of devices and machinery -- from military and medical devices to electric vehicles to unmanned aircraft.
The market is led by wireless charging systems for mobile and consumer electronics devices, applications that have already taken shape through standardization on a worldwide scale. According to a new report from Pike Research, (www.navigant.com/pikeresearch) a part of Navigant’s Energy Practice, wireless power for mobile devices will constitute a market worth more than US$5 billion annually by 2020.
“The barriers to adoption for wireless power are lifting, and it’s clear that this is an environmentally friendly set of technologies that, before the end of the decade, could contribute to a significant reduction in carbon emissions and embedded energy used to produce, ship, and dispose of conventional charging equipment,"...

Apple, Motorola Mobility looking to resolve patent dispute?
Apple and Google's Motorola Mobility division are discussing a way to resolve part of their dispute over smartphone patent, reports "Bloomberg" (http://macte.ch/hG6mM).
"The companies have been exchanging proposals on using binding arbitration to reach a licensing agreement over patents that are essential to comply with industry standards on how phones operate," the article says. "Such an agreement could lead to a global settlement of all of their patent disputes, Apple said in a filing yesterday."
This is part of an ongoing battle between the two companies. Apple has alleged that Motorola infringes 24 of its patents (21 of them with Android-based phones, the remaining three with set-top boxes and DVRs), while Motorola previously asserted 18 patents against a variety of Apple products (mostly but not exclusively iPhone, iPad and iPod). Litigation between the two companies has taken place in several different federal courts.
On Nov. 5 a patent infringement case between Apple and...
Judge okays fine in Google-Safari case
Judge Susan Illston has indicated she will accept the terms of a settlement deal between Google and the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, in which Google will pay an US$22.5 million fine for circumventing privacy protections in Apple’s Safari browser, reports the "IDG News Service" (http://macte.ch/xpNhN).
The judge’s decision is a setback for the Consumer Watchdog advocay group, which had been pushing for tougher sanctions, including a higher fine. However, the group told the "IDG News Service" that it had achieved its goal of drawing attention to what it sees as the ineffectiveness of such settlements.
In its complaint, the FTC charged that for several months in 2011 and 2012, Google placed a certain advertising tracking cookie on the computers of Safari users who visited sites within Google’s DoubleClick advertising network, although Google had previously told these users they would automatically be opted out of such tracking, as a result of the default settings of the Safari browser...
Apple Australia owes $28.5 million in back taxes
Apple Australia has been served with a $28.5 million bill for back taxes, statements lodged with the corporate regulator in April show, according to the "Sydney Morning Herald" (http://macte.ch/khI75).
Apple Australian made $4.9 billion in revenue last year through the sale of its Macs, iPads and iPhones. The bill takes its total tax tab for the year ending Sept. 24, 2011, to $94.7 million, notes the "Herald."
Apple acquiring former Nortel patents
A Korean property rights regulator has revealed that Apple has taken control of 1,024 patents and patent applications from the Rockstar Consortium, a bidding group led by the Cupertino company that won an auction for a package of Nortel patents in 2011, reports "AppleInsider" (www.appleinsider.com).
The article adds that, as a major contributor to the Rockstar Consortium (formerly called Rockstar Bidco) Apple already had access to the pool of about 4,000 former Nortel patents, but it appears that the company wants full rights to the IP. In February the purchase of a number of Nortel Networks patents by a partnership that includes Apple, Microsoft and Research In Motion passed antitrust scrutiny by the US Department of Justice.
In August 2011, Nortel Networks Corp. (www2.nortel.com) announced its subsidiary, Nortel Networks Limited (NNL), and certain of its other subsidiaries, including Nortel Networks Inc. and Nortel Networks UK Limited (in administration), have completed the sale of...
Judge allows amendments in ongoing Apple-Samsung battle
A judge has ruled that Samsung can add the iPhone 5 to its patent-infringement claims against Apple, and Apple can add infringement claims against the Samsung Galaxy Note, the U.S. version of the Galaxy S III and the Jelly Bean operating system, reports "Bloomberg" (http://macte.ch/Kh6Hm).
However, the addition of the Jelly Bean operating system is limited to the software for Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus, U.S. Magistrate Judge Paul Grewal has ruled. The decision came in a second patent lawsuit between the two mobile device giants pending in San Jose, California. In an earlier lawsuit that went to trial in July, a jury found that Samsung infringed six of seven Apple patents at issue and awarded $1.05 billion in damages.
This is all part of the ongoing, global legal battle. Apple and Samsung have filed more than 30 lawsuits against each other across four continents. For example, Apple alleges that Samsung copied the slide-to-unlock technology of its iPhone and iPad devices.

Mobile payments to continue growing with tablet shopping
Mobile purchasing is revolutionizing all aspects of shopping, both online and in store shopping. A new report by Javelin Strategy & Research (www.javelinstrategy.com) found consumers spent more than US$20.7 billion shopping using mobile devices -- especially tablets such as the iPad.
Approximately $5 billion of mobile purchases were made through tablets last year. With holiday shopping just around the corner and other driving forces, the number of people owning tablets is expected to more than double within the next three years. This dramatic adoption will lead to an explosion in retail purchasing using tablet devices. The increase in purchasing further solidifies mobile as the channel to watch.
Javelin found striking differences between mobile phone purchases and tablet purchases. Consumers spend an average of $10 more per purchase using a tablet compared to the average purchase made through a mobile device. Even within the tablet world, there are noticeable differences between...

NCP Secure Enterprise VPN Server now integrates with iOS devices
NCP Engineering (www.ncp-e.com) says its NCP Secure Enterprise VPN Server now integrates with Apple’s iOS to perform certificate-based authentication to control network access of iPhones and iPads.
In this era of Bring-Your-Own-Device, users increasingly prefer to access the company network via various devices, often applying a standard username and password across them all. With its iOS secure authentication, NCP enables IT administrators to use certificates to control assignment rights on these end devices -- without interfering with the user-determined username and passwords, according to the folks at NCP.
Apple’s mobile device management (MDM) distributes various certificates to all authorized iOS devices. When users establish VPN tunnels from their devices, the NCP Secure Enterprise VPN Server uses these certificates to determine whether the user is accessing the network via a notebook, iPad or iPhone and subsequently assigns centrally-defined rights.
This enables network...
Wireless devices continue to show growth
The brightest spot in the overall worldwide hardcopy peripherals (HCP) market during the third quarter of 2012 (3Q12) was wireless devices, with its showing of 2% year-over-year growth in a challenging economic environment.
According to the International Data Corporation (www.idc.com), total worldwide hardcopy unit shipments declined 12.7% year-over-year to nearly 27.4 million units, the fourth consecutive quarterly decline.
Despite a contraction of 15% year over year, inkjet remains the dominant technology with 16.7 million units shipped and a 61% share of the total HCP market in 3Q12. The wireless inkjet segment in mature markets continued to exhibit growth, resulting in 1% year-over-year gain in the third quarter of 2012.
Laser declined 8% year over year in 3Q12 to 9.6 million units resulting in a 35% share of the total HCP market. The wireless laser segment experienced year-over-year growth of 9% and 22%, respectively, in the emerging and mature markets.

Thieves take $1.5 million worth of iPads
A couple of thieves boosted US$1.5 million of iPads from JFK Airport in New York City, reports the "New York Post" (http://macte.ch/k8Z23).
The crooks struck before midnight on Monday and used one of the airport’s own forklifts to load two pallets of the tablet computers into a truck, according to law-enforcement sources. The "Post" adds that they might have gotten more, "but the thieves drove off leaving three more pallets of the Apple tablets behind after they were challenged by an airport worker returning from dinner."
Penclic Mini Keyboard designed with women in mind
Penclic says its Mini Keyboard, which is Mac compatible, was designed with women in mind.
Injuries caused by prolonged and repetitive use of computer keyboards and mice are very real and widely recognized health problems. Perhaps lesser known, is that women are three times more likely than men to develop and suffer such injuries, according to physiotherapist Marianne Ahlberg. A chief reason for this is poorly designed computer peripherals, unsuitable for most women users, she adds.
"The design of today’s peripheral computer devices is not entirely optimal for women," says Ahlberg "Keyboards are generally made too wide, requiring women to work outside the span of their shoulders, while most computer mice add unnecessary muscle strain due to their weight.”
Enter the Penclic Mini Keyboard, whose design incorporates the science community’s latest findings about gender-specific aspects of computer work to provide a keyboard that works just as well for women as for men. The narrowed down...
Tablets, cameras next major GPS, LBS markets by 2017
Despite relatively stunted growth thus far, the tablet and camera markets are forecast to be the next major market for location-based services and GPS IC penetration, according to new data from ABI Research (www.abiresearch.com).
The research group notes that the tablet market has largely been dominated by Apple and its GPS/Modem strategy. GPS shipments are forecast to reach 37 million in 2012, yet it is still much less than had been previously anticipated. There has been mixed news of late, with the launch of Google’s Nexus 7 and Apple’s iPad mini. Wi-Fi location is a standard feature across all major tablets and while it is complementary, it does act as a barrier to GPS integration.
"When we look at the adoption of applications on tablets, it is forecast to largely mirror that of smartphones, with a focus on local search, social, enterprise, navigation, and ambient intelligence," says ABI Research Senior Analyst Patrick Connolly. "Android will lead the way, as ubiquitous location...

Micromat releases automatic diagnostics tool for the Mac
Micromat (www.micromat.com) has released Checkmate, a new automated diagnostic software product for the Mac. It requires Mac OS X 10.6 or higher and costs US$29.99 for a limited time; it's normally $49.99. Site licenses are also available.
Checkmate "learns" when a Mac is typically idle and only runs tests during those times, stopping any time a user returns to the keyboard. It can identify hard drive, memory and file problems before symptoms become visible to users, so that corrective measures can be taken to prevent data loss or hard drive failure, according to Micromat President Jeff Baudin.
Checkmate is designed to be unobtrusive. After it's installed, no further action is necessary from the user for the software to monitor the ongoing health of a Mac. All tests are conducted when the user is away from the computer and longer tests can pick up where they left off (incremental diagnostics), allowing for extended tests to be performed over time.

Apple still in the running for Kodak's patent portfolio
Eastman Kodak was court permission to retain exclusive control of its bankruptcy case through Feb. 28 as it tries to execute an US$793 million financing offer from a group of bondholders, according to "Reuters" (http://macte.ch/AAtSN).
Judge Alan Gropper approved the extension at a hearing in a U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan, allowing Kodak to move forward with its plan without creditors pushing competing proposals. The plan would outline how to repay creditors and exit bankruptcy, notes "Reuters."
Kodak hopes to sell off its patent portfolio to a list of potential buyers that include Apple and Google. Apple has argued that already it owns 10 of the patents in Kodak’s portfolio.
Apple sued Kodak in April 2010, about three months after Kodak accused Apple and Research In Motion of infringing a patent related to ways of previewing images. Apple's countersuit said Kodak devices copy the technology that it uses in Macs, iPhone, iTunes and Photo Booth involving image processing, energy...
Apple now third-largest handset maker in the world
A new report from the Gartner Research Group (www.gartner.com), as reported by "AppleInsider" (www.appleinsider.com), says that iPhone accounted for 5.5% of all mobile phone sales in the third quarter of 2012, making Apple the third-largest handset maker in the world.
Worldwide sales of mobile phones to end users reached almost 428 million units in the third quarter of 2012, says Gartner. Overall mobile phone sales were down 3.1%, but smartphone sales were up 47% year-over-year.
Samsung: no plans to raise processor prices for Apple
After reports earlier in the week that Samsung was raising application processor prices on Apple by as much as 20%, a company official denied the reports to "The Hankyoreh," a Seoul-based newspaper -- as noted by "The Street" (http://macte.ch/IGN4T).
The unnamed official noted that prices are set at the beginning of the year and aren't changed easily. If Samsung did, in fact, increase the price of building mobile processors for Apple, the change is expected to reduce the company's overall margins by as much as two percentage points, according to "AppleInsider" (www.appleinsider.com).
Apple appeals piracy fine involving Chinese encyclopedia
Apple has appealed an $83,600 judgement in China over pirated versions of an encyclopedia sold on the Apple App Store.
According to "electronista" (www.electronista.com), Apple claims that it's not responsible for the development of the content, nor did it deliberately engage in copyright violation. The appeal declares that the court's ruling on the complaint was faulty, and added that the $84,000 fine was excessive and incorrectly applied.
In September a Chinese court ruled in favor of the Encyclopedia of China Publishing House in its suit against Apple that claimed the U.S. company was liable for the sale of unauthorized digital copies of its encyclopedia found on the Apple App Store. First filed in 2010, the suit claimed apps being sold through the store contained pirated versions of the copy-written encyclopedia.
Apple argued that it had no involvement in the development of the third-party apps; however, the court ruled the company was responsible as it both approved and...
Samsung has no interest in 'settling' with Apple
J.K. Shin, the head of Samsung Electronics' mobile unit, told reporters (http://macte.ch/IZR2r) that Samsung has no plans plans to follow Taiwanese firm HTC in seeking a settlement over its patent disputes with Apple.
HTC, which had been embroiled in a global patent battle with the Cupertino company, announced Sunday that the two companies had reached a deal to end all outstanding litigation and sign a 10-year licensing agreement over patents.
"We have no such intention," Shin told reporters on Wednesday when asked if Samsung would seek a similar settlement.
This is all part of the ongoing, global legal battle. Apple and Samsung have filed more than 30 lawsuits against each other across four continents. For example, Apple alleges that Samsung copied the slide-to-unlock technology of its iPhone and iPad devices.
Apple number one in 'ultrabook competitive assessment'
Apple doesn't consider its MacBook Air as an "ultrabook," but that hasn't stopped it from topping the "ultrabook competitive assessment" from ABI Research (www.abirsearch.com).
Apple’s leading position in the mobile computing market is reflected in its average score for innovation and implementation which was 84.7 out of a possible 100, says the research group. Lenovo placed in second position and Samsung in third spot with respective scores of 77.5 and 74.4.
Even though Apple ranks at the top overall, both Lenovo and Asus beat Apple in the innovation segment, according to ABI Research. There is no one section in which Lenovo scores outstanding marks; nevertheless, the company scores consistently across all categories, never dropping below 65%.
The ultrabook competitive assessment" evaluated the vendors' leading devices on form factor and weight (portability), features and performance, new product launches, product portfolio, price and value proposition, emphasis on vendor’s ultrabook...
