Global femtocell shipments good, could be better
Global femtocell shipments generally met the expectations of ABI Research (http://www.abiresearch.com) analysts in 2010, but one salient exception demonstrates how a simple regulation can impede a market’s growth. “About 1.3 million femtocells shipped into world markets in 2010,” says ABI Research Practice director Aditya Kaul. “That number is in line with ABI Research’s forecasts. The total could have been significantly higher -- perhaps 20% higher -- were it not for the continued low performance of the Japanese femtocell market.” That low performance can be traced to a simple cause: the Japanese government’s unique requirement that every femtocell be installed by a qualified technician. When those truck-rolls are multiplied by hundreds of thousands of installations, the drag on the market is no longer trivial, says Kaul. Mobile network operators have long called for the removal or relaxation of this rule and the regulator presaged action early last year, but no change has been seen...

iPad way ahead of other tablets in enterprise market
Barclays Capital analyst Ben Reitzes tells clients in an note -- as reported by "Barron's" (http://macte.ch/rfRpL) -- that he talked with a research analyst at Forrester Research and says the iPad is doing well in the corporate world. His conclusions from the call are that the iPad is “running far ahead of its tablet competition and its their game to lose." There is opportunity for others, including Google’s Android and for Research in Motion, Reitzes says. Apple hasn’t set up an enterprise salesforce, but it is “listening to enterprise customers," he adds. Reitzes notes that Forrester’s work supports the view more and more corporate users are “buying devices and bringing them into work.” So far, Apple is the “winner in the consumerization of IT,” he argues. Also, Forrester sees the tablet computer co-existing with both smartphone and laptop, though “it does delay laptop replacements.” Barclays is estimating 47 million tablets will be sold this year, including 33.7 million iPads.

iPad, tablets leading in surge of NAND flash memory
Apple’s iPad is leading an almost five-fold surge in NAND flash memory use this year as consumers buy tablets such as the iPad in increasing numbers, according to a report released Friday by HIS iSuppli -- as reported by "Computerworld' (http://macte.ch/OZJSC). The consumption of NAND flash memory chips, which are used to build solid-state drives (SSDs) used in mobile devices, is expected to soar to 2.3 billion gigabytes (2.3 exabytes) this year, up a 382.4% from 476.8 million gigabytes (or 476.8 petabytes) in 2010, the article adds. According to iSuppli, shipments of NAND for tablets shows no sign of slowing down, eventually hitting 12.3 exabytes of capacity shipped by 2014. When measured against the total supply of NAND flash, memory in tablets will represent 11.8% of the supply this year, up from a 4.3% in 2010, says iSuppli. By 2014, tablet memory will represent 16% of all NAND flash.

AT&T Giving Free Rollover Minutes
AT&T is apparently on a mission to keep people from migrating to the Verizon iPhone now announced, and is doing a variety of things to try and keep customers. One thing they are doing is giving a free extra 1000 rollover minutes to customers. Some people are getting invitations to this via text that say: "You're a valued AT&T customer. We'd like to add 1000 bonus Rollover minutes to the mobile number ending in xxx. There's NO cost or obligation to you. It's our way of saying thank you. To have your minutes added, reply YES by 3/31/2011. Reply stop to end mktg msgs." While not documented specifically, it appears that all you need to do is text 11113020 the word "yes" At first, we were confirmed this may be a scam, but it does appear to be real, and we've tried it. It works on at least the iPhone (see screen shot).

Apple working on new iOS notification system?
Apple is working on a new notification system for iOS and will be buying a small company to build its technology into the operating system, reports "Cult of Mac" (http://macte.ch/8bmCg), quoting unnamed sources. The name of the company is unknown, but it's reportedly one that already has an app in the Apple App Store. "Apple’s pop-up notification system for new text messages, voicemails and the like has often been criticized as one of the weakest parts of the iOS," says "Cult of Mac." "Notifications are intrusive, modal and often cryptic. It’s a mess ... There were rumors last year that the iPhone’s notification system would be fixed after the chief architect of Palm’s system, Rich Dellinger, returned to work at Apple. However, the system still hasn’t been fixed, and according to our source, Apple is now trying to buy a small app developer to fix it."

Apple doubling some laptop orders
Apple reportedly is revising its laptop orders upward with the volume of some hot-selling models being doubled, according to "DigiTimes" (http://www.digitimes.com). That goes against the general industry trend. Overall, notebook shipments from the top-five notebook makers are likely to contract by 5-10% sequentially in the first quarter, to 38 million units, or the same volume they shipped a year ago, says "DigiTimes." In related laptop news, "CNET" (http://macte.ch/WIjVz) says Apple is targeting a MacBook Air update for this summer that will include a move to Intel's Sandy Bridge processors. Look for it in June, the article says.
The take of the Sellers Research firm (that's me)? Maybe. Moving to a Sandy Bridge processor makes sense. However, Apple won't move the teeny portable to the new Intel chips until the MacBook Pro, MacBook, iMac and (probably) the Mac Pro have made the move. -- Dennis Sellers dsellers@applecentral.com

Sony may pull its artists from iTunes
Sony may pull its artists from Apple's iTunes Store, as well as withhold its games from the iPhone, in what could spark an "all-out war" between the two companies, reports Yahoo News (http://macte.ch/qv7oI). Sony purportedly plans to launch a rival online music store to iTunes in Australia called Music Unlimited. The company may also be planning to launch a gaming service that would enable mobile phone users to play first generation Playstation games on their handsets -- a service Sony says is unlikely to be available through iTunes. "Yahoo News" says Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Michael Ephraim has told reporters that Sony’s music streaming is a "new technology" that gave consumers greater freedom to play their music on a variety of devices. "If we do (get mass acceptance) then does Sony Music need to provide content to iTunes?" he is quoted as saying. "Currently we have to provide it to iTunes as that's the format right now. Publishers are being held to ransom by Apple and they...

No long lines for Verizon iPhone debut
After an on-line sell-out of the new Verizon version of the iPhone 4, and with several other retailers selling the phone on its first day, there were few waiting lines at Apple stores Thursday morning when they opened early for the first day of Verizon iPhone retail sales, reports "ifoAppleStore" (http://macte.ch/3RkHU). There were reports from around the country of no one being in line at Apple stores when they opened at 7 a.m., though other reports described lines of 50 or 60 people at some high-profile stores. "Besides a wider availability, the waiting lines were also mitigated by the nature of the device, transitional and not new, and a survey that found just eight percent of AT&T customers intended to switch their service to Verizon for improved voice calls," says "ifoAppleStore." The lack of expected lines has left some investors worried. However, in a note to clients -- as reported by "Forbes" (http://blogs.forbes.com/briancaulfield/2011/02/11/verizon-iphone-draws-i...

Soundscience’s 3D audio technology, 3Dsst, is a suite of DSP (digital sound processing) algorithms that creates a virtual surround sound experience from 2.1 stereo speakers. 3Dsst actively analyzes incoming stereo audio signals and intelligently places them into a 3D sound field, resulting in immersive 3D sound for your movies and games from 2.1 speakers, according to Richards. The soundscience rockus also boasts a dedicated music mode optimized for organic stereo sound reproduction, letting users hear music with deep, visceral sub-bass; powerful, spacious mids and crisp highs, he adds...

iAds hitting a 'rough spot'?
Apple’s iAds are hitting a rough spot, Erik Schonfeld writes for "TechCrunch" (http://macte.ch/RRGTB). He says that, across the board, several developers he's spoken to confirm that “fill rates” for iAds dropped drastically after the New Year and have yet to recover. The fill rate -- what percentage of the ad inventory is actually filled with an ad -- for two separate developers plummeted from 18% to 6%, Schonfeld writes. And in a few instances for some newer apps, none of the ad slots were getting filled, compared to nearly complete fill rates from other mobile ad networks, he adds. Others report better fill rates but as one developer says, “They have definitely come down.” One reason for the dip could be just seasonal. The fill rates and advertising budgets across all ad networks in general take a hit after the holiday, Schonfeld notes. But there seems to be something else going on here as well, he thinks. “The general consensus among the advertising community is that it is a...

Germany researchers say they hacked a locked iPhone in six...
Researchers in Germany say they've been able to reveal passwords stored in a locked iPhone in just six minutes and they did it without cracking the phone's passcode, reports "PC World" (http://www.pcworld.com/article/219245/). The attack requires possession of the phone and targets keychain, Apple's password management system. Passwords for networks and corporate information systems can be revealed if an iPhone or iPad is lost or stolen, according to the researchers at the state-sponsored Fraunhofer Institute Secure Information Technology (Fraunhofer SIT). The attack is based on existing exploits that provide access to large parts of the iOS file system even if a device is locked, they add. Among passwords that could be revealed were those for Google Mail as an MS Exchange account, other MS Exchange accounts, LDAP accounts, voicemail, VPN passwords, WiFi passwords and some App passwords, according to "PC World." The situation is worrisome for companies that allow employees to use...

Apple on its way to becoming biggest firm in the world
Apple is on the way to becoming the most valuable firm in the world by 2012. Sales of its products, including the latest generation of iPads, iPods, iPhones and Mac laptops and computers, are expected to propel it even beyond the value of the current top company, Exxon, which is now worth approximately $358 billion, reports "The Telegraph" (http://macte.ch/DOPKS). Strong sales, particularly in the US, have led experts to predict a 32% rise in Apple's share price over the next year, which would take its value to $367 billion. Providing the shares of Exxon, an oil firm, do not rise beyond that, Apple's foretold success would make it the biggest in the world for the first time. As "The Telegraph" notes, a technology firm at the top of the corporate tree would be a change from the norm. The list of the world's most valuable firms is traditionally dominated by those in the mining, banking or retail sectors. Pete Najarian, of Trademonster.com, a stock market web site, told "The Telegraph"...

Verizon may sell nine million iPhones this year
Verizon Wireless, which will begin offering the iPhone today, may sell two million or more of the devices this quarter and draw subscribers. The company started sales at 7 a.m. (Eastern) today. However, while online sales to existing Verizon users Feb. 3 ended within hours as the company exhausted its stock, there were few lines at stores that began selling the device today, reports "Bloomberg" (http://macte.ch/Q9xhx). The carrier gaining the iPhone will intensify competition in the U.S. smartphone market and curb customer growth at AT&T, Craig Moffett, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co., told the publication. The threat of losing users may encourage AT&T to increase subsidies on its devices, which would force other carriers to match the lower prices, benefiting consumers, he added Verizon may sell two million iPhones this quarter, according to Rick Franklin, an analyst at Edward Jones & Co., Jennifer Fritzsche at Wells Fargo Securities LLC and Ashok Kumar at...

Apple TV games, iPad 3 coming this year?
A couple of interesting rumors say that games could be coming to the Apple TV this year and that we'll see not only the iPad 2 in 2011, but the iPad 3, as well. "Engadget" (http://macte.ch/EGHKL) says bits of code found in the latest beta version of iOS 4.3 released to developers hints that gaming, multiplayer functionality, leader boards such as the iOS Game Center and gaming controllers may be coming to Apple's set-top box. The article says that several references have been found pertaining to "ATVGames" and "ATVThunder" that point to a controller of some sort, leaderboards (think Game Center), a way to schedule games (multiplayer?), and a store front. "Apple TV's minimum storage capacity (about 8GB) suggests the company might look to streaming not entirely unlike how OnLive works; as our tipster speculates, the OpenGL is mature and thoroughly implemented enough that streaming low bandwidth data and computing locally could happen, but that's just theoretical with nothing in the...

Demo of BayCard, a HyperCard clone, now available
Bayhoff Software (http://www.bayhoff.com/) has released a demo of BayCard, a HyperCard clone. It's fully functional, but will expire after 30 days. Also, a stack may contain a maximum of eight cards. BayCard was designed to allow non-programmers to bring their own visions to life without the need to learn how to write code. It was heavily influenced by Apple’s HyperCard. Like HyperCard, a BayCard document can be thought of as a stack of index cards. As a result, BayCard documents are usually referred to as stacks. Each stack contains a background that appears below all cards.  Unlike HyperCard, BayCard doesn't feature a scripting language. In place of a scripting language, it features over 25 interface widgets including, but not limited to, tables, lists, web pages, date pickers, and iTunes-style star ratings. The full version of BayCard is available on the Mac App Store for US$19.99.
