Average revenue per Apple retail store down slightly

The stores sold 1.1 million Macs in the quarter -- and, you guessed it, Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer says that half were to first time Mac users. The September quarter saw the opening of seven new stores open in six countries, including the first Hong Kong store. -- Dennis Sellers

ITC: Apple didn't violate HTC patents
The International Trade Commission says Apple didn't violate HTC Corp.'s patents for technology used in its mobile devices, a setback in the Taiwanese company's patent fight with the iPhone maker, reports "The Wall Street Journal" (http://macte.ch/Ci8HO). However, analysts said coming rulings were likely more important in determining whether HTC could face an injunction against certain imports into the U.S. market, the article adds. The ITC issued its "initial determination" on Monday, saying that Apple's devices didn't violate four of HTC's patents relating to power-management methods and phone-number directories used in HTC mobile devices. In 2011, Apple filed a complaint against HTC, alleging the company had infringed on its patents. In July, the ITC gave an initial determination that ruled in favor of Apple. If the judgement is made final, HTC could be banned from importing phones to the U.S.

Samsung sues to stop sales of the iPhone 4S
And the battle rages on: Samsung has sued Apple in Japan and Australia to stop sales of the iPhone 4S, reports "Bloomberg Businessweek" (http://macte.ch/Xu2AX). Samsung also sought injunctions against the sale of the iPad 2 and the previous generation iPhone 4 in Japan, the company said in a statement. Samsung claimed Apple’s products infringe its patents covering wireless communications and user-interface technologies. Last week Samsung said it would file motions with courts in Paris and Milan seeking an iPhone 4S ban. Each motion cites two patent infringements on wireless telecommunications technology. Samsung is claiming the iPhone and iPad that use 3G technology infringe Samsung patents. Meanwhile, Apple in September said in a Hague court hearing that Samsung is holding them "hostage" by asking for 2.4% on each 3G chip used in the iPad and iPhone. Samsung is deliberately misusing both the royalty rate and the responsibility for its payment to try and oppose its lawsuit, says Apple...

The iFixit team has dismantled the iPhone 4S. You can find the complete teardown at http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPhone-4S-Teardown/6610/1 , but following are some of iFixit's highlights: "Opening the 4S was no more (nor less) challenging than the iPhone 4. We're always pleased to find a limited amount of adhesive in our patients, and easily removable rear panels are always a plus. However, the same pesky proprietary screws are present, and it's never a joy to encounter fused (read: expensive to replace) displays. All things considered, the new iPhone isn't any easier or harder to repair than last year's model, so it gets the same 6 out of 10 repair score as the previous-gen iPhone 4. "Pentalobe screws, again? We were hoping there would be something new to keep us out this year, but it seems that our familiar five-sided friends have not moved far from their home at the bottom of the iPhone 4S. A couple quick turns with our 5-Point Pentalobe screwdriver and out they come! "Look...

A look at who plans to buy the iPhone 4S
A new study by the Retrevo research group (http://www.retrevo.com) shows that 12% of Android owners and 24% BlackBerry owners are planning to buy an iPhone 4S when it goes on sale tomorrow. Forty-four percent of iPhone 3 or 3GS owners and 42% of iPhone owners plan to upgrade. Initial orders appear to be greatly outpacing iPhone 4 pre-orders, and 53% of potential buyers in this study don’t think it will be difficult to get however, with 18% saying they plan to camp out or wait in a long line to get one you could see some anxious buyers waiting outside the stores for their turn to buy one, says Retrevo. "Although some expressed disappointment in the lack of 'iPhone 5' features it appears that interest is high and demand will be strong for iPhone 4S especially among current iPhone owners," says the research group. "It also doesn’t appear likely that you’ll see many customers camping out in front of Apple stores around the country like we have for products in the past."

Customers are absolutely in love with the iPad 2, and the amazing new iPhone 4S is off to the best start of any iPhone we've ever made. The Mac is soaring to new heights with OS X Lion, and on the eve of its 10th birthday, the iPod is still the world's most popular music player.

Apple, Hollywood talking about movies on iOS devices
Apple is negotiating with Hollywood studios for deals that would let people who buy movies from the iTunes Store watch streaming versions of those movies on Apple devices such as iPads or iPhones without manually transferring them, reports "The Wall Street Journal" (http://macte.ch/k3fYa), quoting unnamed "people familiar with the matter." The service is expected to launch in late 2011 or early 2012. The report doesn't mention Apple's iCloud specifically, the publication said that Apple plans to "put movies in the cloud" to make it easier to share content across the many devices. Since iCloud launched yesterday, it seems likely that this could be the foundation for such a movie service. Also, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster told clients earlier this year that: "Apple's iCloud service for media storage makes it simpler to own multiple Apple devices and share content among them. At first the only media iCloud will store is music and pictures, but we believe Apple may add movies and...

Valve software chief: Apple will own the living room
At this week's WTIA TechNW conference in Washington, DC, Valve Software chief Gabe Newell reckons Apple will soon become a major player in the console biz by launching a product that will own the living room, reports "Reg Hardware" (http://macte.ch/nROXQ). The head of the company games such as Half Life and Counter-Strike, as well as the digital distribution network Steam, was discussing whether the console business has run its course, the article adds. "I suspect Apple will launch a living room product that redefines people's expectations really strongly, and the notion of a separate console platform will disappear," Newell said.
