Apple TV 4K review (2021): Finally, a Siri remote I...

Apple’s new Apple TV 4K isn’t a huge upgrade internally, but it finally comes with a decent Siri Remote. The addition of a directional pad makes it easier to select something to watch, but it also has a touchpad for quick searching. Existing Apple TV 4K owners should just get the new remote, but the new box itself is still compelling to iOS users and anyone who demands the best streaming experience.

The channel can bridge processes running as different users and under different privilege levels. These characteristics allow for the apps to exchange data in a way that can't be detected—or at least without specialized equipment.

Technically, it’s a vulnerability but...

Apple has filed for a patent (number 20210157143) for “modifying display operating parameters baed on light superposition from a physical environment” that involves the rumored “Apple Glasses,” an augmented reality/virtual reality head-mounted display.

In augmented reality (AR), computer-generated content is composited with a user’s physical environment in order to co-mingle computer generated visual content with real-world objects. A user may experience AR content by wearing a head-mountable device (HMD) that includes a translucent or transparent display, which, in turn, allows the pass-through of light from the user’s physical environment to the user’s eyes. However, Apple says that, in some circumstances, light from the physical environment has a color composition and/or brightness that interferes with computer-generated content in a...

The HMD operates as an additive display by adding computer-generated content to the light from the user’s physical environment.

However, Apple says that, in some circumstances, light from the physical environment has a color composition and/or brightness that interferes with computer-generated content in a...

Apple has file for a patent (number 20210157453) for “electronic devices with sidewall displays” that adds credence to the rumors that Apple is working on a foldable iPhone — or at least a flexible one.

The patent involves devices with flexible displays (and this could also apply to iPads, even Mac laptops) that could be bent to form displays on multiple surfaces of the devices. These mini-screens could offer additional functionality.

In the patent data Apple notes that electronic devices such as portable computers and smartphones are often provided with rigid displays made from rigid display structures. For example, a liquid crystal display (LCD) may be formed from a stack of rigid display structures such as a thin-film transistor glass layer with display pixels for providing visual feedback to a user, a color filter glass layer for...

iPadOS limits iPad Pro power: apps only able to use...

The launch of the new iPad Pro with M1 chip has once again sparked conversation about how the iPad hardware is vastly outpacing the operating system and software ecosystem that it can run. Many people are setting their hopes on iPadOS 15 at WWDC to announce overhauls to multitasking, external display support and file management to bring iPad productivity closer to what is possible with macOS.

However, there’s an even more direct limitation of iPadOS today for customers hoping to use that high-specced M1 chip for pro apps. It turns out that the operating system on the new iPad Pro limits all third-party apps to a maximum of ~5 GB RAM each.

7 Android 12 features Apple should borrow for iOS 15

With WWDC just around the corner, we’re all eagerly awaiting the new tweaks, features, and settings that Apple is planning for iOS 15. But before the big day arrives, we’ve been checking out the preview release of Android 12 and have come across a few features we’d like to see Apple bring over to the iPhone. Here are seven Android 12 features that we’d love to see in iOS 15.

Notification history

Notifications can be a nuisance, but sometimes we absentmindedly dismiss an alert that we actually need. Once that happens on our iPhone, we’re out of luck. But Android 12 lets you see your recently deleted notifications and we’d love to get that same functionality in iOS.

You can easily access previously deleted notifications in Android 12.

IDG

To be fair, Google actually introduced notification history with Android 11,...

How to opt out of the Find My network

Apple’s new AirTags make use of the crowdsourced Find My network that Apple built from your devices: iPhones, iPads, and Macs with internet connections pick up specially formulated anonymized Bluetooth network broadcasts, package them with the current location, and send an encrypted form to Apple.

An iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch with Find My network enabled can be tracked this way from a native Find My app (in iOS, iPadOS, or macOS), while AirTags and upcoming Find My network accessories from third parties are always available for tracking.

Only an iPhone, iPad, or Mac can relay these beacons with their location, and that feature is opt-out: Apple enables it for new devices and it’s turned on when you updated to iOS/iPadOS 13 or 14 or macOS 10.15 Catalina or 11 Big Sur. The switch to disable the Find My network on your device is a little hidden, and its name has changed in some places: it was called “offline finding” in macOS.

When your device has Find My...

More People Are Buying Wearables Than Ever Before

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Ars Technica: The wearables category of consumer devices -- which includes smartwatches, fitness trackers, and augmented reality glasses -- shipped more than 100 million units in the first quarter for the first time, according to research firm IDC. Q2 2021 saw a 34.4 percent increase in sales over the same quarter in 2020. To be clear: wearables have sold that many (and more) units in a quarter before, but never in the first quarter, which tends to be a slow period following a spree of holiday-related buying in Q4.

According to IDC's data, Apple leads the market by a significant margin, presumably thanks to the Apple Watch. In Q1 2021, Apple had a market share of 28.8 percent. Samsung sat in a distant second at 11.3 percent, followed by Xiaomi at 9.7 percent and Huawei at 8.2. From there, it's a steep drop to the smaller players -- like BoAt, which has a market share of just 2.9 percent. However, analysts say upstarts or smaller...

Apple Watch Series 3 Owners Now Required to Perform...

Following the iOS 14.6 and watchOS 7.5 updates, Apple Watch Series 3 owners who update their devices to a new version of watchOS are prompted to unpair and re-pair the Apple Watch from the iPhone during the update process because of storage space constraints.

The GPS-only version of the Apple Watch Series 3 only has 8GB of internal storage, which limits the amount of space available for software updates, and Apple's solution to this problem is to wipe the Apple Watch Series 3 and start fresh from a backup whenever an update is required.

As 9to5Mac points out, prior to the iOS 14.6 update, Apple Watch Series 3 owners who attempted to install new versions of watchOS continually...

The wearables category of consumer devices—which includes smartwatches, fitness trackers, and augmented reality glasses—shipped more than 100 million units in the first quarter for the first time, according to research firm IDC. Photos of the original Mac interface “busy being...

Ran across this old folklore.org post, thought you might enjoy it.

Andy Hertzfeld, member of the original Macintosh team:

The Macintosh User Interface wasn’t designed all at once; it was actually the result of almost five years of experimentation and development at Apple, starting with graphics routines that Bill Atkinson began writing for Lisa in late 1978. Like any evolutionary process, there were lots of false starts and blind alleys along the way. It’s a shame that these tend to be lost to history, since there is a lot that we can learn from them.

Fortunately, the main developer of the user interface, Bill Atkinson, was an avid, lifelong photographer, and he had the foresight to document the incremental development of the Lisa User Interface (which more or less became the Mac UI after a few tweaks) with a series of photographs. He kept a Polaroid camera by his computer, and took a snapshot each time the user interface reached a new milestone, which he...

The M1 iPad Pro superpower

Sebastiaan de With, Halide blog:

Let’s take look at what’s new with the M1 iPad Pro cameras. In taking a quick look at what’s new, we’ll share a discovery: your iPad has a superpower that not even Apple has told you about.

Superpower? You have my attention.

I’m one of those people that got the nearly-thirteen inch iPad Pro, which is an absolute spaceship of a tablet. It certainly does not evoke thoughts of anything micro, but that’s precisely where its strength lies.

iPad basically comes with a microscope. That’s right: you can take some pretty incredible macro shots of things without any accessories. The iPhone 12 Pro (or any iPhone, really) has a different lens design and only focuses to about 8 cm (that’s over 3 inches) away from the camera lens. iPad Pro easily focuses on things much closer to its sensor.

And:

Interestingly, with the LIDAR sensor assisting autofocus it can sometimes be a bit hard to try this fun attribute of the camera...

Apple CEO Tim Cook is right — A more open iPhone...

Daniel Howley, Yahoo Finance:

Testifying in game developer Epic’s antitrust suit against Apple, Cook called the notion of putting third-party app stores on the iPhone “an experiment I wouldn’t want to run.” He’s not alone, either. According to New York University Tandon School of Engineering professor Justin Cappos, opening up the iPhone would imperil every iPhone owner.

“I think there’s a very clear line to draw to say that if you let basically people go and run their own effective app stores,” Cappos told Yahoo Finance, “even if they’re installing things like kind of within an app, the potential for malicious code and malicious behavior on the iPhone increases dramatically.”

This seems an obvious point. I’ve never seen it argued that Android is more, or even as secure as iOS. The well known issue is update fragmentation. The percentage of users on the latest version of iOS is always much, much higher than the percentage of users on the latest version of...

Zoom adds support for new iPad Pro Center Stage

Zoom blog:

Attention all iPad Zoomers! You’ve got some great new features coming to the Zoom app on Apple’s latest iPad Pro models, which were announced at Apple’s Spring Loaded event on April 20.

Two new features – support for Apple’s Center Stage and expanded Gallery View – will help you better participate in calls, potentially stave off video fatigue, and better connect over Zoom.

And:

Previous iPad models can display up to 25 video tiles in Gallery View, but those using Zoom on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro can now see up to 48 video tiles (6×8 in Landscape Mode), allowing them to better connect in large meetings.

Don’t have the latest iPad Pro? No worries! Many iPad models are also getting expanded Gallery View, and those users will see a few additional participants on a single screen, depending on the device.

To bring more or fewer people into view on any iPad, simply pinch the display with two fingers to zoom in and out.

Nice to see...

Apple patent filing involves Apple Watches with...

Apple has filed for a patent (number 20210157414) for an “optical sensing device” that involves an Apple Watch that can recognize gestures.

In the patent filing, the tech giant optical sensors for detecting light, detecting proximity, taking photographs, or the like have been incorporated into smartphones, tablet computers, wearable devices (e.g., watches, glasses, etc.), and other computing devices, allowing software developers to create engaging software applications (“apps”) for entertainment, productivity, health, and the like. In some instances, optical sensors work in conjunction with a variety of other input mechanisms for interacting with a device (e.g., touchscreens, buttons, microphones for voice commands, etc.).

However, Apple says that many devices, however, can have limited device interaction and control capabilities due to device size constraints, display size constraints, operational constraints, and the like. For example, small or thin user devices...

Global smartwatch shipments in quarter one of 2021 grew 35% year-over-year, according to Counterpoint Research’s recently published Global Smartwatch Model Tracker

The research group says that Apple maintained its leadership position, catalyzing the overall market growth by recording a 50% year-over-year increase in the demand for the new Series 6 models. As a result, the company saw its market share climb by 3% points.

Samsung’s shipments also rose 27% year-over-year, with the popularity of the Galaxy Watch 3 and Galaxy Watch Active series. However, Counterpoint Research says the South Korean vendor’s growth was below the market average and it saw a small dip in its market share. Huawei continued to lose share compared to a strong quarter a year ago.

Apple wants ‘Apple Cars’ to be able to ‘talk’ with...

Apple has filed for a patent (number 20210160817) for “optimized resource selection procedures in vehicle-to-vehicle communications” that shows that the rumored “Apple Cars” could communicate with each other, iPhones, and Apple Watches

On the other hand, the patent filing could simply involve future features in CarPlay devices. CarPlay provides a simplified way to use your iPhone interface on a car’s touch screen, giving users access to Siri voice controls, as well as Apple Maps, Apple Music, Phone, Messages, and a variety of third party apps.

Either way the patent filing involves vehicle-to-everything (V2X) and Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications —  automobile technologies designed to allow automobiles to communicate with each other and with other devices (e.g., pedestrian smartphones and traffic lights). Apple says these technologies have the potential to redefine transportation by providing real-time, highly reliable, and actionable information flows to enable...
