Press release:
SuSE Linux 7.3 Now Available for PowerPC
Most Comprehensive Linux Version For PowerPC CPU's Now Shipping
Oakland, CALIFORNIA, November 19, 2001 -- Today, SuSE Linux, the
international Open Source technology leader and solutions provider,
released SuSE Linux 7.3 PowerPC Edition. The latest SuSE edition is the
most comprehensive Linux version for Motorola PowerPC processors on the
market today. SuSE Linux 7.3 PowerPC Edition comes with 8 CDs containing a
state-of-the-art Linux operating system and more than 2,000 applications.
SuSE Linux 7.3 PowerPC Edition offers software for virtually any purpose,
including image processing software, security solutions, emulators, network
and e-commerce tools. The improved desktop KDE 2.2.1 sets new standards for
functionality, ergonomics, and user-friendliness. Furthermore, in KDE
control center new arrangements have been made to organize the numerous
applications in sections such as archiving, graphics, publishing, and
network. The virtual machine MOL 0.9.60 (Mac on Linux) was also improved
substantially. It allows the use of a network-capable MacOS under Linux in
window or full-screen mode. Highlights such as RealPlayer 8, Opera 5.0,
Samba 2.2.1a, and GNOME 1.4.1 complement the software equipment.
Based on Linux Kernel 2.4.12 and glibc 2.2.4, SuSE Linux 7.3 PowerPC
Edition represents the latest state of Linux development. Through improved
memory management, Kernel 2.4.12 achieves better performance particularly
in server operations. Private users benefit from the expanded range of
drivers and improved USB support. The automatic hardware detection feature
has been considerably extended to include even more components, e.g. CD
writers, thus enabling YaST2, the SuSE installation and configuration tool,
to execute the installation and the Internet hook-up almost entirely by
itself. Also new: enhanced YaST2 modules for the comfortable setup of TV
cards (BTTV) and scanners. XFree86 4.1 and the extended graphics
configuration tool SaX2 (SuSE advanced X configuration) facilitate the
setup of graphics hardware. Furthermore, user-friendly YaST2 modules allow
fine adjustment of monitor and desktop settings while the system is up and
running.
"SuSE's mission is to make Linux available for whatever system a user has,"
explains Holger Dyroff, SuSE's US director of sales. "Now, Mac users can
have all the benefits of the latest developments in Linux and still run
their native Macintosh system and applications. We want everyone to
experience Linux."
Offering More Support
The documentation of SuSE Linux 7.3 PowerPC Edition underwent substantial

(http://sdb.suse.de) or turn to the free 60-day installation support, which
