WEBTEN 3.0 - AWARD WINING WEB SERVER FOR MAC ADDS WEBMAIL

New release includes enhanced security, compatibility, robustness,
and extensibility

Santa Barbara, CA, April 19. Tenon Intersystems today announced
WebTen 3.0, an upgrade to its industrial-strength, high-performance
Apache-based Web server for Power Macs. The new WebTen now supports
web-based email, secure remote administration, enhanced SSL
certificate support, dynamically loadable Apache modules, and a
Sherlock-compatible high-performance search engine. WebTen, one of
the easiest-to-use and fastest Apache web servers in the world, is
available for both Mac OS and for Apple's new OS X Server.

WebTen's new anytime, anywhere web mail enables users to access email
from any device running a browser. WebTen's web mail, based on
EMUmail, is compatible with SMTP mail servers, such as Tenon's
Post.Office-based POP mail and IMAP server, NetTen. ISPs who want to
set up advertising-free web mail for their clients can purchase a
250-mailbox web mail license from Tenon for $200 or $450 for a fully
customizable version. See http://www.tenon.com/products/webmail for
more information about WEBmail.

In addition to built-in WEBmail, this new version of WebTen includes
a pre-installed trial copy of WebEvent, a web-based calendar
application. WebEvent is an interactive scheduling application,
previously only available for UNIX and NT. See
http://www.matadordesign.com for more information about WebEvent.

WebTen's SSL has been updated to support Y2K-compliant two-tier
Verisign certificates and to support Netscape Certificate Servers for
corporate and military intranets that employ internal certificate
authorities using the Netscape software. WebTen's Administration
Server now uses SSL to give webmasters the security of encryption
while configuring virtual hosts remotely.

WebTen's new dynamic architecture lets webmaster add Apache modules
on-the-fly, simply by dragging them into a Modules folder. The widely
used PHP3 is included with WebTen 3.0 as a configurable module. PHP
(www.php.net) is a scripting language that combines many of the best
features of Perl, shell programming, and C and includes a variety of
database interfaces. "We expect Macintosh web developers to begin
embracing standard internet web tools, such as the powerful PHP, as a
first step in transitioning to Apple's preemptive multitasking OS X,"
Tenon's President and CEO, Steve Holmgren, said. "WebTen's ability to
support dynamically loadable Apache modules, combined with Tenon's
freely available SDK for creating WebTen compatible modules, makes
the Mac OS an extensible Apache platform as well as providing a
seamless transition to OS X Server." The new release also includes
many additional enhancements and modifications for improved
robustness and ease-of-use.

WebTen incorporates the highly acclaimed Apache web server software
developed by the Apache Group. Apache is well known as stable,
full-strength, feature-rich web server software used on almost two
million web sites worldwide and recently included with Mac OS X
Server. Tenon has taken this mature, integrated, scalable software
and extended it with performance enhancements, security, and
Macintosh-specific features to make a unique Apache for the Macintosh
platform. WebTen extends the open source Apache with a point & click
interface, internet object caching, SSL 3.0 (for supporting eCommerce
with multiple secure certificates on a single machine), FTP (for
uploading web content on a virtual host by virtual host basis), NFS
(for offloading content), a state-of-the art DNS, a high-performance
search engine, and advanced proxy services. Tenon's Macintosh-based
Apache is running in a pre-emptive multitasking environment and is
able to sustain over 1000 hits/second.

WebTen 2.x customers can upgrade to WebTen 3.0 for $199; upgrades
from WebTen 1.x are $250. Webmasters who want to continue to run
their WebTen Mac OS servers, while gracefully transitioning to OS X,
can purchase a second copy of WebTen for OS X Server for only $199.
WebTen 3.0 for new customers is $495; a 'sidegrade' from WebSTAR or
Apple's ASIP is only $350.

The new software will be available in May. A public beta version is
downloadable from the Tenon WebTen Beta page:
(http://www.tenon.com/support/files/WebTen/Beta), with the login
(WTBeta) and password (WT234989). The beta version includes a
built-in 14-day license. This can be extended until May 31st, 1999
with the following temporary WebTen 3.0 license:
1-6-12-3c8ad3f0a-236228-637523370-96-4WT
