DataViz Ships Version 2.0 of Web Buddy
Enhanced to Support Password Protected Sites, Proxy Servers and More
-A free upgrade to all Web Buddy customers
Trumbull, CT- September 30 1998- Today DataViz(R) began shipping Web
Buddy(R) 2.0 for Macintosh and Windows 95, a package of Internet utilities
focused on increasing the productivity and organization of web browsing,
teaching and research. Along with other new features, version 2.0 of Web
Buddy now handles password protected sites and supports proxy servers. Web
Buddy 2.0 also incorporates "Intelligent web downloading" which includes
some of the following new features: "stay in directory" while downloading
and content filtering by extension or file type. Version 2.0 has also been
updated to support the latest Internet protocols and can download sites
faster than earlier versions of the product. Web Buddy is a free upgrade to
all owners of previous versions.
Support for Password Protected Sites and Proxy Servers Now use Web Buddy's
"Site To Go(tm)" or "Schedule" utility to download password protected Web
sites. Users can simply enter in their User ID and Password when taking a
"Site To Go" or scheduling a site to be taken at a later time. Another
major addition in version 2.0 is support for proxy servers. This allows
users who access the web via a Proxy Server to be able to take advantage of
all Web Buddy has to offer.
Intelligent Directory Handling Simplifies and Pinpoints User's Downloads
The new "stay in directory" feature in Web Buddy allows the user to start
in a single directory of a web site and download all subsequent pages in
that directory. Using the "Site To Go" utility in Web Buddy, it's no longer
necessary to take an entire web site in order to get the information a user
really wants or needs. For example: If downloading the CNN web site, a user
could tell Web Buddy to stay in the International News directory and Web
Buddy would only take that portion of the site. This is specifically useful
for those using the web as a research tool. It not only saves download
time, but reduces the file size of very large web sites downloaded to the
user's hard drive.
Content Filtering Increases Flexibility and Control Along with becoming
increasing large and complex in size, many web sites include file types
such as .pdf, .wav or .exe files which users may not want or have any use
for. Now instead of unknowingly taking these unneeded files "To Go", they
can easily be eliminated by setting a preference in Web Buddy's Option
Menu. This also quickens the download process by skipping over types of
files the user won't need in an "off-line" setting.
Truly "Control" Web Browsing Activities
In many cases, such as a classroom environment, users may not wish to click
a "live" link and be connected to the Internet while "off-line". Web Buddy
2.0 has addressed the issue of truly controlling web content once a user is
browsing pages and sites "off-line". DataViz has established a helpful
"live link roadblock" feature which once activated can prevent students,
children or employees from clicking on live links to reenter the web live
during an "off-line" browsing session. This feature is also very convenient
for anyone in an offline setting, because it prevents the browser from
trying to initialize a connection if a live link is clicked by mistake.
Latest Internet Protocols Supported and Faster Downloading Web Buddy now
has support for the latest Internet protocols, HTTP version 1.1. In
addition HTML 3.0 support in the conversion utility has enhanced the
translation of HTML tables into word processing formats. These features and
other improvements to Web Buddy, have optimized and increased the speed in
which pages are downloaded.
Pricing and Availability
Web Buddy sells for about $39 and is available at fine retailers including
Micro Center, Fry's Electronics and BuyDirect.com. The upgrade is free to
all Web Buddy owners and is available for Windows 95 and the Macintosh. A
