NEW VERSION OF VERITY HTML EXPORT ENABLES DYNAMIC, 'ON-THE-FLY'
CONVERSION OF ENTERPRISE DOCUMENTS INTO WEB-READY HTML

New Solutions & Features Enable Corporate Web Developers to Deliver
Customized Web Content With Zero Client Administration; Enterprises
Preserve Investment in Archived Documents with Verity HTML Export 2.0

SUNNYVALE, Calif. December 14, 1998 Verity, Inc. (Nasdaq: VRTY), a
leading provider of knowledge retrieval solutions for the enterprise
and Internet, today introduced a new version of its innovative Verity
HTML Export product. Designed for enterprise-wide use, Verity HTML
Export 2.0 is a server-based solution that allows organizations to
preserve their investment in archived documents by regenerating files
into HTML directly from their native formats, without requiring an
HTML editor or the original application that created the document.

HTML Export 2.0 supports word processing, spreadsheet and
presentation files from popular office applications, including
Microsoft Office, Lotus SmartSuite and Corel WordPerfect Suite. The
product then transforms these documents, into customized,
cross-platform HTML documents, accessible through a Web browser to
anyone in the enterprise or via the Internet. Enhancements in this
new version include a COM programming interface, expanded format
support, including soon-to-be released Microsoft Office 2000, and
support for Cascading Style Sheets (CSS).

Verity HTML Export 2.0 makes it easy for an organization to
dynamically convert and view documents from a standard Web browser. A
big advantage for desktop and network managers, the product provides
zero client administration document conversion and viewing without
requiring any alteration to the desktop.

Leasing company Forsythe Technology (www.forsythesolutions.com) is
writing an order management system that incorporates Verity HTML
Export in several ways. Forsythe uses HTML Export to convert order
forms into HTML, so that field sales representatives can view order
status and configurations from a standard Web browser. It also uses
Verity's product to convert proposals into HTML and transfer them,
resulting in a 50% reduction in the size of the documents, which
subsequently has reduced the company's bandwidth requirements
significantly. Next year, the company expects to be able to take all
final customer deal documents and use Verity HTML Export to convert
them into HTML and store them in an 'electronic deal folder.' The
'deal folder' will then be published over the corporate Intranet and
viewed using a standard Web browser.

"We chose Verity HTML Export because its architecture is optimized
for thin clients, meaning that everyone benefits from the rendering
that HTML Export does on the server because it keeps the clients
thin," said Mitch Germaine, Vice President, MIS for Forsythe
Technology. "Verity HTML Export is easy to install and use, and gives
us a way to provide hassle-free document viewing to all employees
without requiring additional client software or plug-ins. With this
new version of HTML Export, we can also take advantage of additional
features, including custom templates, that offer even greater control
over how documents generated in HTML appear to our customers."

Product Offers Developers New Web Templates, Style Mapping &
Programming Interfaces

Verity HTML Export 2.0 helps developers control the 'look and feel'
of generated HTML utilizing easy-to-use custom templates for creating
the desired Web content. Whether a document is five or 15 years old,
Verity HTML Export preserves its document characteristics such as
tables, graphics and font attributes, and segments documents,
spreadsheets and presentations into multiple-linked Web pages with
navigational links.

The product also includes paragraph mapping to corporate mark-up,
giving customers control over how information is presented in the
generated HTML by treating styles in the original document in various
ways. For example, users can remove all of the information that is
defined by a custom 'continued' style, map a custom 'author's
remarks' style to an 'author's remarks' tag in the HTML or map a
custom 'product description' style to a reference to a Cascading
Style Sheet (CSS) in the output HTML. HTML Export 2.0 also converts
embedded graphics to developers choice of formats, including JPEG and
Java, and breaks up large documents based on file size for easier
download and navigation.

Generating HTML output that is fully HTML 3.2 compliant and supported
by any Web browser, Verity HTML Export 2.0 includes a COM programming
interface for Visual Basic and Java programmers and includes Active
Server Page (ASP) templates for "out-of-the-box" server-based HTML
vending/delivery.

'Verity HTML Export 2.0 offers enterprises an opportunity to maintain
their investment in archived documents and be able to deliver custom
Web content automatically based on corporate style," said Rob Miller,
General Manager of Verity's KeyView Business Unit. 'With its new
features, Verity HTML Export makes it easy for developers to convert
documents on-the-fly into HTML while maintaining an organizations
Web-based 'look and feel.'

Verity HTML Export is also embedded in leading third-party Web
applications such as Lotus FastSite 2.0, Netscape SuiteSpot and Xerox
DocuShare.

Pricing and Availability

Verity HTML Export is now available on Microsoft Windows NT, Windows
98, Windows 95 and UNIX platforms. For the first time, the product is
also being made available on the Macintosh PowerPC. Verity HTML
Export is priced per server on a site license basis starting at
$10,000. For more information about the product or pricing, please
