UMAX Offers Significant Savings on
PowerLook and Astra Scanners

Customers Save $1000 on the Purchase of a PowerLook III

Fremont, Calif., August 3, 1998 -- UMAX Technologies, Inc., the U.S.
scanner market leader and supplier of imaging and computer technologies,
today announced significant rebate offers and a price reduction on scanners
from the PowerLook professional scanner line and the Astra personal scanner
line.

The PowerLook III, the scanner powerhouse for demanding graphic
professionals, previously available for a list price of $3995, is now
available for $3495. Along with this $500 savings, UMAX is offering an
additional $500 mail-in rebate, available through October 31, 1998, for a
total savings of $1000. UMAX is also offering a mail-in rebate of $200,
available through October 31, 1998, on the purchase of a PowerLook II,
bringing the price as low as $1095. Additionally, UMAX announced a $50
mail-in rebate, effective through December 31, 1998, on the Astra 1200S
home office scanner, bringing the estimated street price to $199.

PowerLook III: The Scanner Powerhouse
The PowerLook III is a 1200x2400 dpi resolution scanner optimized for
professionals in electronic publishing, graphic arts, commercial printing,
catalog design, advertising design and service bureaus as well as
professional photographers and photo labs. The PowerLook III combines
42-bit color depth and a maximum optical density of up to 3.4 Dmax for a
full range of color including highlight and shadow details. The PowerLook
III offers the ability to scan a full range of different media types,
flexibility not available with most scanners. The PowerLook III includes
everything a designer needs to scan transparencies, slides, reflectives and
negatives.

Creating quality graphics requires more than quality hardware. The
PowerLook III also delivers a full scanning system with the inclusion of
MagicScan 4.0, an intelligent scanner control application that simplifies
the scanning process, binuscans PhotoPerfect Master for automatic color
correction and separation, Live Picture for real-time image editing on a
Macintosh or Wright Design for real-time editing and illustration on a PC.
Also included are Adobe Photoshop LE and Xerox TextBridge Classic OCR
software.

PowerLook II: Delivering Graphic Excellence For graphic designers, service
bureaus and professional desktop publishers who demand graphic excellence,
the PowerLook II is a high-resolution professional color flatbed scanner
offering 36 bit color depth and a 3.3Dmax. The PowerLook II generates
sharp, clear images at a hardware resolution of 600 x 1200 dpi and a
maximum enhanced resolution of 9600 dpi. Adjustable contrast and
brightness controls allow the user to exactly match input images. The
PowerLook IIs output settings are available at either 36 or 24 bit color
depth. The PowerLook II software bundle includes MagicScan 4.0, binuscans
PhotoPerfect Advanced, Adobe Photoshop LE and Xerox TextBridge Classic OCR
software. It also includes UMAX' proprietary frame holders and
transparency adapter.

Astra 1200S: Affordable Quality Scanning The Astra 1200S features an 8.5 "
x 14" legal size scanning bed and is capable of extending its hardware
resolution from 600 x 1200 dpi to a maximum resolution of 9600 dpi through
UMAX Ultra View Technology. Offering 30-bit color, the Astra 1200S is able
to capture accurate colors and tones, bringing out the preciseness of the
original image. This image quality makes the Astra 1200S ideal for
scanning graphics, photographs, presentations and proposals. With its
SCSI-2 interface, the scanner delivers uncompromised scanning speed and
increased productivity.

With a software bundle that includes Adobe PhotoDeluxe, Newsoft Presto!
PageManager and Caere OmniPage LE OCR, the Astra 1200S is a perfect
scanning solution for desktop publishing and office use. Adobe PhotoDeluxe
is a step-by-step image editor with guided activities to create
screensavers, cards, calendars and more. Presto! PageManager is a powerful
"drag-and-drop" software tool which allows consumers to print, copy, email
and fax scanned images and documents. OmniPage is a quick and easy way to
scan documents into word processing or other text applications.
