[NPL] SoftWindows 98 -- New Pricing

Insignia Solutions Ships SoftWindows 98
at Breakthrough Price
09:17 a.m. Sep 08, 1998 Eastern

FREMONT, Calif., Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Insignia Solutions(R) (Nasdaq:
INSGY), the leading provider of virtual machine/emulation technology, today
announced the immediate availability of SoftWindows(TM) 98, a new version
of its popular SoftWindows compatibility software program. SoftWindows 98
lets Apple(R) customers run Microsoft(R) Windows(R) 98 applications on any
Power Macintosh(R) computer, including G3(TM), PowerBook(R), and the new
iMac(TM) machines. SoftWindows 98 is available through major retail stores
and catalogs, and has an expected U.S. retail price of $169, and comes with
a pre-installed, ready-to-run copy of Windows 98, making it the most
cost-effective compatibility software solution on the market today.

SoftWindows 98 offers superior and faster networking, more seamless
integration into the Macintosh environment, and more extensive device and
multimedia support, including gaming technologies based on the new 3Dfx
Voodoo2(TM) chip set. In addition, SoftWindows 98 takes advantage of
Windows 98 Internet capabilities.

"SoftWindows 98 is a complete Windows 98 Pentium(R) MMX(R) PC in software,
and it is the fastest, most compatible software solution for running PC
applications on a Macintosh," said Leigh Dworkin, senior product line
manager for Insignia Solutions SoftWindows and RealPC(TM) products. "With
SoftWindows 98, you can easily launch and run Windows applications through
a familiar web browser interface. And at just $169, it puts any Windows
business, entertainment or home application within the reach of every Mac
user. At this price, it's a must-have item."

Superior, Faster Networking

SoftWindows 98 provides the fastest networking of any solution of its type.
It takes advantage of Open Transport and MacTCP, connects to high-speed
Ethernet and Token Ring networks, and unlike its closest competitor, it
shares the user's Mac IP address. This results in faster, easier networking
and is a critical consideration in mixed business environments.

Seamless Mac Integration

SoftWindows 98 lets users drag and drop text and graphics between the Mac
and PC environments, includes SmartCopy for cutting and pasting between
Windows and Mac applications, and is appearance manager-savvy. The program
provides Apple Guide and Balloon Help and supports AppleScript. A new Hard
Disk Mounter utility makes it easier than ever to transfer files between
the Mac and PC environments. The exclusive EasyLaunch feature lets users
simply double click the PC icons on the Mac desktop to launch PC programs.
The product also includes Insignia's convenient TurboStart Launch
Accelerator for Windows 98, which launches Windows even faster than a PC.

More Extensive Device Support

SoftWindows 98 accesses virtually all Mac and PC SCSI devices, including
scanners, ZIP, Jaz, and Syquest drives. It also emulates Sound Blaster Pro
and Sound Blaster 16, and supports graphics acceleration cards based on the
new 3Dfx Voodoo2 chip set, important considerations for those running the
latest Windows games and multimedia programs on their Macs.

The Latest Internet Capabilities

SoftWindows 98 solves the problem of Mac users being locked out of web
sites that expect PC-only connections. The program gives web content
authors the freedom to preview web pages from both Mac and PC browsers.
Macintosh users who need to run Windows applications can use SoftWindows 98
to move around in a web browser interface that is familiar to them, as
opposed to learning a new Windows user interface. SoftWindows 98 lets users
easily access and manipulate PC files on the Internet and view PC ActiveX
content. Complimentary software includes Microsoft Internet Explorer,
Netscape Navigator, EarthLink Network TotalAccess, Adobe Acrobat Reader,
QuickTime for Windows, and the Microsoft Office Viewers.

Upgrade Information

For a limited time, current users of SoftWindows 95 and RealPC are being
offered a promotional price of $139, approximately $30 off the expected
U.S. retail price. This price is also being offered to any user of
Connectix Virtual PC who would like to move up to SoftWindows 98. In
addition, a freely downloadable web-based patch will be available for those
SoftWindows 95 5.0 and RealPC customers who want to install their own
copies of Windows 98. For more information, customers can contact Insignia
