BBEdit Lite 4.6 Now Available from Bare Bones Software

Bedford, MA -- August 17, 1999 -- Bare Bones Software is pleased to
announce an update to the premier free text editor for MacOS, BBEdit Lite
4.6. This new version of the hugely popular editor is ready for immediate
download.

The Editing Standard

Since the first release of BBEdit Lite in 1993, its speed, power, and ease
of use (including transparent cross-platform file format handling) have
made it the premier freeware text editing platform for the Macintosh. It
offers a wide variety of tools to make writing, editing, processing, or
searching any type of text content as quick and easy as possible.

Same As It Ever Was, Only Better

BBEdit Lite has always used the same high-performance text processing
engine that makes the commercial version of BBEdit the ultimate HTML and
text editor. BBEdit Lite 4.6 builds on this same solid foundation, while
adding more features and conveniences over previous Lite versions.

Among the most visible improvements in version 4.6 are an enhanced Hard
Wrap command, the ability to assign key equivalents to all of BBEdit Lite's
menu commands via the "Set Menu Keys" option, and support for extended grep
search special characters. In addition, BBEdit Lite 4.6 benefits from
numerous other interface and performance tweaks.

"BBEdit Lite 4.6 brings the fundamental strengths of commercial versions of
BBEdit to our freeware product," said Rich Siegel, CEO of Bare Bones
Software. "The support of the Mac community has made it possible for us to
share this power with every Mac user."

Find What You're Looking For

Text searching has always been a key feature of both BBEdit and BBEdit
Lite. Users can search across multiple files with BBEdit Lite, making it a
snap to find just the information they want, while Unix-style "grep"
pattern searching is available to aid in more complex searching tasks.

Small But Powerful

While still only about a megabyte in size, BBEdit Lite 4.6 can edit and
handle text in ways that most larger, more unwieldy applications cannot. It
also has a low appetite for RAM, so it's always there when you need it.

For even more text processing options, BBEdit Lite includes support for the
BBEdit plug-in architecture. A number of useful plug-ins that automate
common text conversion tasks are included with the freeware package. Third
party plug-ins are also available to handle even more editing tasks.

All This And Still Free

Few tools offer the speed and flexibility of BBEdit Lite 4.6. Fewer still
are free.

"The Macintosh has always been about creative power," said Siegel. "BBEdit
Lite lets every Mac user have a tool that brings that power to text
editing."

BBEdit Lite 4.6 is available immediately for download at the company's web
site (http://web.barebones.com/free/bbedit_lite.html).

Fast Track To Even More Power

Registered users of BBEdit Lite 4.6 are eligible for a cross-upgrade to
BBEdit 5.1, the ultimate HTML and text editor on the Macintosh, at a
significant discount off the retail price. Details are available at the
company's web site
(http://web.barebones.com/products/bbedit/cross.html).
