Symantec Ships Visual Cafe for Java 2.0
Macintosh Professional and Database Development Tools

CUPERTINO, CA -- Symantec Corporation (NASDAQ: SYMC), the leading provider
of Internet development tools, announced today that Visual Cafe for Java
Macintosh, the fourth generation of its popular Cafe product family is now
shipping. Visual Cafe for Java Macintosh is the only comprehensive Java
development tool available that fits the diverse needs of today's Macintosh
developers, allowing Macintosh developers to take their Java applications
and applets to a higher level of interactivity with corporate databases,
HTML Web page development and deployment. This release contains the latest
Java technology and the most powerful development features available for
Macintosh developers today.

Visual Cafe for Java Macintosh is an open standard, multi-platform, visual
Rapid Application Development (RAD) tool for quickly and easily developing
Java applets and applications. And through RAD on /off developers can
choose the way they want to work. After careful analysis of the needs
expressed by the Macintosh developer community, Symantec developed Visual
Cafe for Java Macintosh in two distinct feature-rich solutions for two very
different types of Java developers: Visual Cafe for Java Professional
Development Edition and Visual Cafe for Java Database Development Edition.
Both solutions offer full support for Apple's upcoming MacOS Runtime for
Java (MRJ 2.0) including debugging within any application running MRJ 2.0,
full support for JDK 1.1 and JavaBeans, an automatic code generator on/off
environment (RAD On/Off), and JavaBeans Creator Assistant. The company also
announced today that Visual Cafe for Java Database Development Edition
Macintosh offers tight integration with Claris FileMaker Pro database and
BlueWorld's Lasso database middleware products (includes trial versions of
both products). The Visual Cafe for Java Macintosh products provide both
existing Cafe Macintosh customers and Visual Cafe 1.0 Macintosh customers a
power-packed upgrade path to take advantage of the latest Java technology.

"Macintosh remains the preferred development platform for many Java
developers, and it's important to them to have the latest Java development
technology," said Mansour Safai, Vice President of Symantec's Internet
Tools Division. "Macintosh Java developers have been clamoring for powerful
development features like Rapid Application Development, and the ability to
quickly and easily link Java applications to existing corporate databases.
These new releases dramatically increase a developer's productivity and
shorten the developer's Java development cycle by utilizing advanced
features that professional developers need to create Java applications.
With today's announcement, Symantec is reaffirming its commitment to
deliver the best Java development tools with the latest technology, and is
setting new standards in value and performance."

Symantec's Visual Cafe for Java Professional Development Edition and Visual
Cafe for Java Database Development Edition Macintosh provide developers
with complete Java development solutions, including database assistants,
templates and JavaBeans components to dramatically shorten their Java
development cycle. The unique On/Off automatic code generator feature
allows developers to work the way they want to, by turning on or off the
automatic code generator for selected files as needed.

Visual Cafe for Java represents a significant upgrade of Symantec's
industry-leading Java Integrated Development Environment (IDE), and builds
on the momentum established by the release of Cafe, the first Java
development tool to market, in March 1996 followed by Visual Cafe in
December 1996. Also included with the new releases are Symantec's Visual
Page HTML Web authoring software and Netscape Communicator 4.0 providing
developers with the ability to quickly and easily integrate their HTML and
Java development projects. This integration provides Java developers with
the ability to build, modify, and preview their Java creations running in
both a Java enabled HTML authoring environment or from within a browser
environment.

No other Macintosh development tool on the market today provides a more
complete solution. With the new release of Visual Cafe for Java Macintosh
Professional Development Edition and Database Development Edition, Symantec
has added a series of distinctive power features that allow Macintosh
developers to take advantage of the latest in -- Java technology. Turning
automatic code generation on/off, the ability to debug in any application
running MRJ 2.0, and on-the-fly class reusability are just a view of the
new power features included. The improvements to the product reflect
Symantec's goal of making Visual Cafe for Java Macintosh the fastest,
easiest and most robust Java development tools available.

Visual Cafe for Java 2.0 Professional Development Edition
Visual Cafe for Java Professional Development Edition is designed to
maximize the productivity and performance of the Macintosh Java development
environment. This comprehensive Java development solution with a Macintosh
OS8 look and feel is ideal for Web Developers adding Java functionality to
their Web pages or professional developers creating powerful Java
applications. This edition includes:

* Powerful Java and JavaBeans IDE With Plug-and-Play JavaBeans
Functionality - makes Java development as easy as wiring Java components
together;

* 100+ professional, reusable JavaBeans components with the ability to
customize their properties and enhance their JavaBeans functionality;

* JDK 1.1 support via MRJ 2.0-the upcoming standard for the Macintosh VM;

classes, then reuse them immediately without the need to save them outside
the project or in the component library;

automatic code generation on or off for each individual source file as
needed;

environment. Easy to follow database assistants show the way to easily
create platform independent Java applets and applications that access
FileMaker Pro databases anywhere on the network via the Lasso server.
