[MD1] StuffIt Engine 5.0 SDK

ALADDIN SYSTEMS' STUFFIT ENGINE SDK GETS AN UPDATE TO BOOST PERFORMANCE AND
ALLOW DEVELOPERS TO USE THE NEW 5.0 COMPRESSION STANDARD IN THEIR SOFTWARE

The StuffIt Engine 5.0 SDK Includes The StuffIt Compression And
Decompression Standard To Reduce Installer Size, Fit Developers
Needs, And Increase Benefits To Customers

Watsonville, CA- February 26, 1999 - Aladdin Systems, Inc., developer
and publisher of the worldwide Macintosh compression standard,
StuffIt(r), today announced the StuffIt Engine Software Developer Kit
(SDK) 5.0 for Macintosh is now available. The StuffIt Engine gives
third party software built-in support for StuffIt archives (.sit),
the Macintosh standard for archiving and compression.

By licensing the StuffIt Engine, a developer's product can easily
create the new StuffIt 5.0 archives (.sit), Self-Extracting archives
(.sea), and encrypted archives among other formats. The StuffIt
Engine consists of a series of code resources that give users access
to standard StuffIt archival compression and decompression.

"As an industry leader it is important for Aladdin to continue to
develop new and better technology," said Darryl Lovato, CTO.
"Creating the best architecture for Macintosh developers is
critically important and a big focus for us and the technology that
we introduce. Innovative leaders continuously push the boundaries to
improve their products transparently so the customer doesn't even
notice a difference in how they use the product- that's what we've
done with StuffIt."

New StuffIt Engine Features and Enhancements:

*Now Multi-Lingual, all strings are stored in Unicode, lending files to
better cross-platform capabilities
*Multi-Platform, all OS file information is saved, translated and restored,
regardless of the source or target platform (Macintosh, Windows or Unix)
*Save and restore item comments on Macintosh files and folders
*Choice of compression methods, Fastest and Maximum, Fastest allows 20%
faster compression and Maximum compresses files an average of 15-20% smaller
*Updated MIME translation
*Creates and decodes the new MacBinary III file format
*Full HFS+ support on the Macintosh with correct translation of create and
modification dates, Macintosh file comments are also saved and restored
*No archive file size or number limits
*Ability to mount disk images using Aladdin's ShrinkWrap(tm) technology
*Includes ability to decode Private File(tm) and Lha Archives

One Application Programming Interface (API)
Although significant improvements and enhancements have been made to
the StuffIt Engine, there is still only one application programming
interface (API) to handle all formats. Developers can easily work
with the following formats:

*StuffIt compression and decompression
*ZIP decompression
*BinHex decoding
*MacBinary decoding
*UUcode decoding
*ARC decompression
*GZIP decompression
*Unix Compress decompression
*AppleLink Package decompression
*Compact Pro decompression
*Mounting ShrinkWrap disk images
*Private File and Lha decoding
