[MD1] Sorenson Video 2.0

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sorenson Video Provides Dramatically Improved Performance on Video
and Multimedia Applications for QuickTime Developers and Users

MacWorld Expo, San Francisco, Calif., January 5, 1999-Sorenson Vision, Inc.,
a privately held maker of digital video compression tools, has
announced Sorenson Video(TM) 2.0, a major upgrade of the video codec
(encoder/decoder)
licensed by Apple Computer, Inc. for its QuickTime(TM) software. Sorenson Video
2.0 greatly enhances the performance of the encoding and decoding
process for QuickTime compatible CD-ROM, DVD and Web-based video
applications. In addition, it offers increased flexibility for
managing the quality/bandwidth
tradeoffs inherent with compressed video. Decoders for playback are
built into all releases of QuickTime 3 or later.

The latest version of the Sorenson Video QuickTime codec provides developers
a powerful, full-featured engine and sophisticated tools to handle
the highest quality variable bit rate (VBR) encoding up to four times
faster than the company's original QuickTime video codec. Sorenson
Video 2.0 also supports multi-processor workstations-such as those
operating under Windows NT-efficiently dividing the workload among
the number of available processors. These capabilities combine to
make short work of even the longest compressed video media and
applications.

The improved motion handling of Sorenson Video 2.0 further increases
the quality and clarity of compressed video clips, reducing the
distortion and artifacts common with inferior video codecs. Playback
scalability makes it possible to adjust the video frame rate to
accommodate end-user systems with
lower processor speeds. Watermarking support is included for
copyright protection and to add a professional touch to any
multimedia presentation.

"The performance of Sorenson Video 2.0 has been astronomical," says
Jim Baker of studiosource/21st Century Media, a leading creator of
interactive marketing programs for major corporate clients. "We have
at least halved the
time of our video compression, and that is very important because of
how much we do for our clients. We have dedicated systems that churn
video all day and all night, creating multiple bit-rate versions of
each video clip. There are a number of CD and Web-based projects we
simply couldn't have done
without Sorenson Video."

Sorenson Video 2.0 is a QuickTime system extension that allows users to take
advantage of the enhanced compression quality on any platform that
supports QuickTime 3 or later. Developers can purchase Sorenson Video
2.0 encoding software directly from Sorenson Vision. No developer
royalties are required for applications created with the Sorenson
Video encoder.

"The outstanding quality achieved by Sorenson Video is critical to
the continuing acceptance of QuickTime by multimedia content creators
and publishers of CD-ROMs or Web sites on both Macintosh and Windows
platforms,"
says Robert Sharp of Terran Interactive. "The performance gains of
the newest version of the Sorenson codec offer substantial benefits
to the marketplace."

The Sorenson Video codec is the result of over a decade of research
and development, and delivers an unparalleled combination of signal
compression and picture quality. This next-generation codec uses new
vector quantization
techniques (the mathematical process by which compression is
achieved), in addition to advanced motion compensation and other
image quality techniques.
The result is a quality video stream whose high compression allows it
to be used in multimedia desktop and Web-based applications, or
anywhere that high-quality, low-bandwidth video is required.
