[MD1] QuickTime 2.5 for Windows

Additional multimedia, video, and productivity vendors invest in QuickTime
2.5 for Windows.

Market opportunity for hardware developer growth when products ship

MacWorld - January 8, 1997 -- Apple Computer, Inc. (Cupertino, CA) today
announced that Allegiant Technologies, Electric Image, miro Computer
Products, Inc., Strata, Specular and Terran Interactive have joined the
third-party co-development team of QuickTime 2.5 for Windows (QT 2.5-Win).

Adobe, Broderbund, Equlibrium, Macromedia , Media 100 and Truevision are
also continuing their close relationship with Apple in accelerating the
development of QT 2.5-Win. QT 2.5-Win is a key component of the QuickTime
Media Layer, which is an effort intended to deliver a universal container
for mixed media types (e.g. video, audio, 3D graphics, text, etc.).

"Application developers are creating software that takes advanatge of QTML,
and a wide range of customers will use those solutions. Hardware vendors
get the benefit of this work from the moment they ship QuickTime enabled
products", said Carlos Montalvo, Vice President of Apple Computer's
Interactive Media Group. "Digital media developers, professional
creatives, and publishers see Apple's QuickTime Media Layer (QTML)
extending the value of their digital content by making it ubiquitous:
platform independent, OS independent, and topology independent.
Industry-wide co-development of QuickTime for Windows confirms this",
Montalvo added.

"Allegiant SuperCard has always excelled at enabling multimedia developers
to exploit the power of QuickTime on the Macintosh. Our new cross-platform
Web browser plug-in, Roadster, further leveraged the QuickTime technology
for delivery on the World Wide Web. Now, with new QuickTime 2.5 for
Windows, we can provide our developers state-of-the-art enhancements in the
Windows version of Roadster, and to our forthcoming SuperCard for Windows,"
said Joel Staadecker, CEO of Allegiant Technologies.

"But our work with QT 2.5-Win is really just a first step in what we see as
a fundamental commitment to Apple's overall QuickTime Media Layer strategy.
QTML gives us a way to leverage core Apple technology and Allegiant's
expertise to build leading-edge authoring tools for multimedia, Internet,
courseware and custom application development," Staadecker added.

Engineers from all twelve* companies will be collaborating with Apple to
architect key elements of the QT 2.5-Win product, including dual media
streaming mixing and effects, 3D track integration, video frame-grabbing,
NT multi-processor support, memory management, media compression and
decompression as well as the high-performance playback necessary to ensure
broadcast and professional adoption (*Adobe, Allegiant, Broderbund,
Electric Image, Equlibrium, Macromedia , Media 100, miro Computer Products,
Strata, Specular, Terran Interactive, Truevision).

"We at miro are making a significant investment in our core video software
technology that will ensure miro's market leadership for the next five
years. We chose QuickTime to be at the heart of this development effort.
QuickTime's multi-platform capabilities and unified API enable us to more
rapidly leverage our technology on multiple platforms. This reduces our
time to market and development costs, allowing us to continue to deliver
products that lead the market in price and performance.", said Scott Francis
Software Manager, miro Computer Products Inc.

Over the past 4 years, QuickTime has been the industry's leading multimedia
development architecture for MaOS and the premier multimedia client on 32-
and 16-bit Windows. QuickTime has become the de-facto cross-platform
standard for multimedia on the Web, intranets and post-production through
alliances with Netscape Communications Corporation (Mountain View, CA) and
Silicon Graphics, Inc. (Mountain View, CA).

"We are delighted by the rapid engineering progress after just six weeks
working with Apple's QuickTime team to create a new version of Media 100
to operate under Windows NT. Apple's QuickTime team has moved fast to
deliver us the QuickTime code we need. We in turn are beating our
milestones to port Media 100's QuickTime components and its real-time
operating system software that is resident on our Vincent(TM) 601 hardware
to Windows. As a result, we expect to ship on time and be ready for prime
time at NAB '97.

Because of QuickTime, we are going to show Media 100 operating on both
Macintosh and Windows NT systems that are 100% compatible and deliver
digital picture and sound quality that matches or beats traditional
broadcast equipment." -- John Molinari, President, Media 100

QuickTime 2.5 for Windows, Internet, and Mac OS provides developers with a
compelling and previously unattainable business proposition: the ability to
unify and target their multiplatorm tool development and media content
creation to a common, industry -standard architecture. In effect,
QuickTime becomes a 'target platform' for multimedia developers on both
Windows, Mac OS and UNIX which, like Java, allows for the widest
distribution of content and media among personal computers and
workstations.

"Corel will continue its support of Apple's QuickTime for Windows
throughout our product line," said Mr. Eid, Vice President of Technology at
Corel. "First, we are excited to announce our new video editing product
Corel Lumiere. Lumiere, a non-linear Video and Audio Compositing program,
allows multimedia users to capture, edit and export QuickTime Movies,
allowing them to be distributed and used by all QuickTime-savvy software
and hardware."

"In addition, our Click & Create multimedia and game authoring tool
supports QuickTime for Windows now! Corel is planning to support across
its multimedia product line many of the rich, new capabilities of QuickTime
for Windows 2.5 when it is released. Finally, we have dozens of multimedia
titles, including All Movie Guide 96 and Bernard of Hollywood's Marilyn,
that depend on the quality of delivery that QuickTime for Windows provides.
We are continually impressed by the significant achievements of the
QuickTime engineering team. Corel has come to depend on this level of
responsiveness from Apple Computer and QuickTime for Windows in
particular", said Eid.

Apple's QuickTime Media Layer (QTML) includes a number of key advantages
for multimedia development. QTML is a new paradigm for multimedia authoring
on Mac OS, and Windows that enables one single 'bridgeware' API on Mac OS
and Windows to support 3D, Audio, Video, Conferencing/Collaboration,
Speech, Virtual Reality and more, in a seamless, fully-integrated fashion.

QTML will serve as Apple's open-platform alternative for a single, unified
standard in multi-platform rich content deployment

Some of these advantages are:
*Full multi-platform support (Mac OS, Windows 3.1, 95 and NT, OS/2, UNIX)
*Long-term industry usage (QuickTime has been available on Windows for over
4 years) and associated code stability
*Seamless integration with other Apple multimedia technologies for Windows,
QuickDraw 3D for workstation-quality 3D graphics, QuickTime VR for
creating panoramic computer-generated or photo-realistic environments, and
QuickTime Conferencing for collaboration capabilities.

QuickTime 2.5 for Windows will be the first multi-platform,
high-performance open architecture for manipulating and distributing
high-quality digital video on Windows 95 and Windows NT personal computers.

"Apple Computer has a reputation for providing best-of-class multimedia
technology for Macintosh customers -- our goal is to now set a similar
benchmark for Windows developers," said Mitchell Weinstock, product
marketing manager for QuickTime for Windows. "The endorsements of 49
leading Windows and multi-platform vendors demonstrate the industry need
for a unifying OS-independent standard for multimedia. Our goal is to work
with any and all interested vendors to make QuickTime, and QTML, the
unifying industry standard solving the development needs of our
collaborators and customers."
