[MD1] MacTranslator Generates Design From Code

MacTranslator 1.0 - Fast, Easy Design From Code

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa, February 21, 1997 --- Excel Software, the world's leading
vendor of Macintosh CASE tools, today announced availability of MacTranslator
1.0 for Macintosh. MacTranslator extracts software design information from
existing program source code into a language independent text file. Used in
conjunction with its MacA&D product, MacTranslator allows software developers
to automatically generate graphic class diagrams and a data dictionary from
C++ or Object Pascal/Delphi code or structure charts from C, Pascal, Basic or
Fortran code. MacA&D supports object-oriented analysis and design,
structured analysis and design, real-time and multi-task design, data
modeling, code generation with integrated editing/browsing, requirements
traceability and use cases and multi-user team dictionary.

MacTranslator replaces the company's former Translator product. It closely
matches the functionality of the new WinTranslator product for Windows 95/NT
computers. It is used to document legacy code for human understanding, to
enable forward engineering of existing projects using modern software
engineering methods and to support an iterative development process between
design and code. Its unique ability to process thousands of lines of code
within minutes for virtually any C/C++, Pascal/Object Pascal, Basic or
Fortran compiler for DOS, Windows, Macintosh, UNIX, mainframe or embedded
computer systems provides software developers with an extremely flexible
reengineering tool.

From a user's perspective, the typical process involves issuing commands to
build a list of code files, extract dictionary information into a text file,
add comment delimited code keys to the source files and generate a list of
referenced modules. Output files are imported into MacA&D. Text files can
easily be converted between Macintosh and Windows formats. Users can
customize MacTranslator and the output it produces with language and default
options. Several types of library files are supported for processing large
projects with multiple folders of code files. MacTranslator can edit list
files, reports, library files and code with user definable file extensions
easily customized for any development environment.

Developers can quickly understand the code structure of large software
systems by clicking through graphic diagrams in MacA&D or by clicking to the
code itself. MacTranslator also has the ability to extract detailed
information from the source code including class attribute and operation data
types, function parameter lists and programming comments. Design changes and
enhancements can be made with MacA&D and new code generated.

MacTranslator is priced at $495 and is compatible with Macintosh computers or
Solaris and HP-UX computers with Apple's Macintosh Application Environment
(MAE) software. It includes a printed User's Guide and on-line help.
Registered owners of the former Translator product can upgrade for $125.
