Apple Ships Mac OS 7.6.1 Update; Delivers Reliability Improvements to the
Mac OS

CUPERTINO, California-April 7, 1997-Apple Computer, Inc., today released a
set of system software enhancements that improves the overall reliability
of the Mac OS, and brings the benefits of Mac OS 7.6 to the most recently
introduced Mac OS compatible systems. Released in January, Mac OS 7.6
continues to receive an enthusiastic reception.

Significance
Mac OS 7.6.1 Update delivers on its two main goals: to improve stability
through reliability improvements, and to bring Mac OS 7.6 support to
recently introduced computers not currently supported by Mac OS 7.6. This
release is not intended to deliver any new features, nor does it deliver
updates to technologies already available through download sites on the
Internet and online services.

Numerous Improvements
Mac OS 7.6.1 Update is Apple's rapid response to feedback from customers
and developers on Mac OS 7.6. It delivers updates for all Macintosh and
Mac OS-compatible computers running Mac OS 7.6. Customers using
PowerPC-based computers will be pleased to find that nearly all Type 11
errors are eliminated. Type 11 errors are general errors which force the
computer to be restarted, resulting in a loss of all unsaved work. Nearly
all of these errors are now properly classified as Type 1 or Type 2 errors.
These errors cause the active application to quit, but allow the customer
to save their work in other applications before restarting the computer.

Customers with 68030- and 68040-based computers will benefit from an
updated CFM-68K Runtime Enabler which allows these computers to use
applications that take advantage of the Code Fragment Manager (CFM).

In addition to other improvements also delivered with Mac OS 7.6.1 Update,
PowerBook customers will benefit from improvements in serial device
compatibility, PC storage cards, infrared and removable CD-ROM drives.

Mac OS 7.6.1 Update
Mac OS 7.6.1 Update is available as a floppy disk set, and installs only on
computers running Mac OS 7.6. It will install on computers supported by Mac
OS 7.6, which includes all Power Macintosh computers, PowerPC computers
manufactured by Mac OS licensees, 68040-based computers, and 68030-based
computers that support 32-bit memory addressing.

Mac OS 7.6.1 Update is available electronically, free of charge (excluding
any connection fees), from Apple at "Apple SW Updates" on the Internet
(http://www.info.apple.com), America Online (keyword: AppleComputer), and
CompuServe (GO APLSUP). To get a list of authorized mirror sites on the
Internet, visit: http://support.info.apple.com/ftp/mirrors.html. In the
U.S., customers may order Mac OS 7.6.1 Update on four floppies for $10
(plus tax and shipping/handling) by calling 1-800-293-6617 .
Customers running a localized version of Mac OS 7.6 should not install
the U.S. version of Mac OS 7.6.1 Update. Localized versions of the Update
will be released within approximately 90 days of the U.S. version. The
European mirror site is:
ftp://ftp.info.euro.apple.com/Apple.Support.Area/Apple.Software.Updates

Customers who have purchased one of the recently announced computers not
supported by Mac OS 7.6 can obtain a full install of Mac OS 7.6.1 through
the Mac OS Up-To-Date program. These computers include the Power Macintosh
4400, 5500, 6500, 7300, 8600, and 9600, and any Performa versions of these
computers. For more information about qualified machines, see the Mac OS
Up-To-Date website at:
http://www.macos.apple.com/macos/releases/fulfillment.html, or in the U.S.
and Canada call 1-800-335-9258.

Mac OS 7.6 Update for PowerBook 3400
The Mac OS 7.6.1 Update floppy kit will not install on the PowerBook 3400,
due to the special version of Mac OS 7.6 that is shipped on this computer.
For these customers, Apple expects to release the Mac OS 7.6.1 Update for
PowerBook 3400 shortly. It will update PowerBook 3400 computers to Mac OS
7.6.1, and will be available from the same download sites listed above.
