[MD1] Graphics Demo Contest Announced

Mac Demos HQ 64k Graphics Demo Contest
http://www.stoneentertainment.com/contest/
March 4, 1999 - A loose knit organization of Mac demo coders, sponsored by
Mac Demos HQ and Stone Entertainment, are proud to announce the first 'Mac
Demos HQ 64k Graphics Demo Contest'. This contest will serve to expand the
realms of Macintosh development by bringing together graphically adept
programmers from around the world in an all out battle of the fittest!

"A graphics demo is a mathematically based artistic expression.", explains
Kyle Ellrott, Mac demo coder and administrator of the
Comp.Sys.Mac.Programming.Games FAQ:
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Park/3201/. "Demo coding has been
very popular on the Amiga and DOS platforms but until recently has been
virtually nonexistent on the Mac."

More major Mac demos have been announced this year than in the past five
years combined! Today the Mac demo community walks out of obscurity and
into the light. To learn more about the recent growth of the Mac demo
scene read: http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Park/3201/da_text.html.

The Contest
The main goal of this contest is to popularize graphics demos on the
Macintosh platform. But, in general this graphics demo contest is designed
to pit the skills of each programmer against one another to spark the
creation of new, never-before-seen, graphical effects which not only
challenge the skills of the participants, but also the capabilities of
their computers.

The "64k" in the contest title refers to the file size restriction imposed
on each demo entry. All graphics, music, and code must fit into no more
than 64 kilobytes of disk space. It is necessary to impose this
restriction in order to reduce the amount of time required to finish a
demo. Yet it is enough working space for the contestants to use their
creative freedom.

Time Line
This contest begins March 4th and ends May 1st. All validated entries must
be received before 12:00 AM on May 1st, 1999. Official rules are available
on the contest web site.

Prizes
So far no official prizes have been announced. Developers should enter
this contest with the understanding that it is just for fun and fame.
Unofficially however contest organizers could add a prize at any time if a
donator comes forward.

Registration
Contestants are encouraged to register by filling out the form on the
"registration" page of the contest web site. Upon registration your
information will be added to the "contestants" page.

Resources
The Mac Demos Mailing List is an excellent source for demo coding
information. Anyone can subscribe to the list at the Mac Demos HQ
website: http://www.multimania.com/blopblop/main.html. On the list, you
can converse with other programmers, get ideas and help for creating new
effects, and talk about the contest and what everyone has planned.

After May 1st, all demos will be available for public download from both
the Mac Demos HQ website and the contest website. As the contest
progresses the contest website will be updated with contestant info, screen
shots, and other information... so please visit often!
