Apple Releases Beta Version of New Personal Web Server

Apple and Maxum Join Forces to Provide Personal Web Sharing for the Mac OS

NEW YORK, INTERNET WORLD, Dec. 9, 1996 -- Apple Computer, Inc.(Nasdaq:
AAPL) today announced that it has released a beta version of personal web
server technology, and has licensed the technology from Maxum Development.
As a result, users of networked Macintosh computers and Mac OS compatibles
will be able to publish both simple and multimedia content across the
Internet or an intranet using World Wide Web protocols. Apple will be
demonstrating the beta version of Personal Web Sharing at its booth at
Internet World here.

Built upon the foundation of Maxum's award winning technology (RushHour,
WebLock, and NetCloak), Apple will make available the personal web server
technology to allow web publishing without dedicating a separate machine.
The new product enhances Apple's easy-to-use product line of Internet
publishing capabilities.

"With Maxum's personal web server software, every user can extend the
Macintosh's superior publishing capabilities to the Internet or an
intranet," said Larry Tesler, vice president of Apple's AppleNet division.
"The Mac OS is favored by most web designers. Offering web server
capabilities for the Mac OS will allow designers to run small websites on
their own Mac, or to pretest draft pages before submitting them to a
dedicated server. A small business with a greater than 128kb full-time
Internet connection will be able to share a single Macintosh computer for
both authoring and web service."

"By joining forces, Apple and Maxum are extending Apple's industry-leading
publishing capabilities," said John O'Fallon, president of Maxum
Development. "Personal Web Sharing will give organizations greater access
to their information assets in a secure manner, with the ease-of-use the
Mac is famous for."

Personal Web Server: An Extension of Macintosh Personal File Sharing Features

Just as today's Macintosh customers use personal file sharing for
individuals to share files within their workgroups, the personal web server
will allow document sharing with any user with a web browser, including
users of Windows, UNIX, and OS/2. Web server security is assured with the
proven existing personal file sharing features in the Mac OS.

The Maxum personal web server software offers extremely high performance.

"We estimate that the Mac OS web server solution will offer customers
performance improvements more than five times greater than the WebForOne
product that Microsoft recently acquired, and it will have less effect on
the performance of other applications that the customer is using," said
Andy Lauta, director of Product Marketing, AppleNet.

In addition, the personal web server offers scalability to Apple's broad
range of industrial-strength dedicated web server products, Apple Internet
Server Solution (AISS). The personal web server offers easy installation
and manageability, with complete integration with the Mac OS.

The personal web server is designed for small businesses and schools as
well as departmental applications in corporations. For example, individuals
often have a need to quickly make available drafts of product proposals,
weekly sales reports, or copies of a presentation. A professor, for
instance, could use the personal web server software to publish office
hours or a recommended reading list. There are many situations in which
information needs to be shared, yet there may not be a need for a dedicated
server. A personal web server is a quick and easy way for an individual to
share information across an intranet.

Availability

A beta version of the personal web server software is available today on a
limited basis and a public beta version will be available soon on the
AppleNet website at: http://applenet.apple.com/.The beta version will be
free of charge, and is intended for testing and evaluation purposes only.
Pricing for the final product has not yet been determined.
