[MD1] AppletVIEW Toolkit

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AppletVIEW Toolkit, Software For Connecting Java Applets To
Instruments And Physical Devices, Available Now.

) AppletVIEW Toolkit provides engineers and software developers
) an easy way to interact with instrumentation systems over the
) Internet using Java.

Austin, Texas -- May 7, 1998 -- Nacimiento Software Corporation announced
today the availability of AppletVIEW Toolkit 1.0, a software system for
creating Java applets to communicate through virtual instrumentation
servers to instruments and physical devices over the World Wide Web.
AppletVIEW Toolkit allows creation of graphical user interfaces for
accessing and controlling electrical or mechanical systems over the
Internet or corporate intranets. Using the AppletVIEW Toolkit, engineers
and scientists can create Java applets as "virtual front panels" to
existing instrumentation systems. The AppletVIEW Toolkit is a
cross-platform solution which allows standard Web browsers to be used to
control and monitor experiments, processes, machines, test equipment,
instruments, and physical devices remotely from anywhere in the world.

For example, at Michigan State University researchers have already
incorporated the AppletVIEW Toolkit in mechanical engineering dynamometer
lab experiments, allowing students to run tests from anywhere on campus.
Previously, students had to schedule time slots in a limited availability
lab. With the AppletVIEW Toolkit, however, the students can now use
standard web browsers to log onto the lab's web page, start and stop the
motors in the lab, control the speeds and RPM of the motors, all while
observing the voltage trends on AppletVIEW Toolkit's real-time charts.
"AppletVIEW [Toolkit] gives us all the advantages of Java's platform
independence, but automates the difficult task of creating the graphical
user interface and handling the communication with [National Instruments']
LabVIEW," reports the team.

The AppletVIEW Toolkit does not require the user to do any Java
programming, but automatically generates Java applets which allow clients
to view and control remote instrumentation systems through a web browser.
The AppletVIEW Toolkit makes the task of developing control systems for
physical devices extremely easy - sliders, knobs, graphs and other user
interface controls are simply dragged and dropped within the included
applet building tool. The user interface controls and resulting applets,
implemented as Java Beans, contain built-in capabilities to communicate
over networks with standard instrumentation software packages such as
National Instruments' LabVIEW and LabWindows, Microsoft's Visual Basic, and
C++.

About the AppletVIEW Toolkit

The AppletVIEW Toolkit is a complete software development kit for creating
Java applets to communicate with distributed instrumentation systems. The
AppletVIEW Toolkit allows users to rapidly create Java applets without
programming by using a graphical "drag-and-drop" approach. Because the
toolkit itself is written entirely in Java and runs within existing web
browsers, it offers the advantage of true distributed and cross-platform
capabilities over other types of networked instrumentation solutions. The
AppletVIEW toolkit runs and has been tested on Windows 95, Windows NT,
MacOS and UNIX. Currently, modules have been developed for communicating
with National Instruments LabVIEW. Modules for communicating with Microsoft
Visual Basic, National Instruments LabWindows, and Microsoft Windows C++
applications are expected to be available in the fourth quarter of 1998.
