[MD1] AppleShare IP 5.0.2 To Support Mac OS 8 and WebSTAR API

AppleShare IP 5.0.2 To Support Mac OS 8 and WebSTAR API

CUPERTINO, California--Oct. 29, 1997--Apple Computer, Inc. today announced
availability of the latest version of its server software, AppleShare IP
5.0.2, which supports the newly introduced Mac OS 8, the new version of
AppleShare Client 3.7.2, as well as Starnine's WebSTAR API. By supporting
the WebSTAR API, Apple is strengthening its support of the Internet and
promoting broad adoption of the API to its developer community.

According to Apple Product Marketing manager John Hanay, AppleShare IP
5.0.2 incorporates enhancements that were suggested by AppleShare customers
and developers. "The support for the new Mac OS 8 and the new version of
AppleShare Client 3.7.2 are designed to offer greater stability and
performance." stated Hanay. "The AppleShare IP adoption of the WebSTAR API
will allow developers to enhance the capabilities of the AppleShare IP Web
Server and create new web solutions for Macintosh customers."

AppleShare IP 5.0.2 Services
Designed to offer a complete productivity server solution for small
business or corporate users at the departmental and workgroup level,
AppleShare IP 5.0.2 combines traditional file sharing using TCP/IP and
AppleTalk, with File Transfer Protocol (FTP) capabilities, a POP3/SMTP mail
server, an HTTP web server and an AppleTalk print server--providing users
with a one-stop productivity solution for shared information and resources.
Users are equipped with all the core technologies needed to exploit the
power of the Internet including: web page design, email, remote management,
proxy services, Windows connectivity, and website usage analysis.

New to the software bundle is the addition of Mac OS 8, which includes Open
Transport 1.2, as well as the addition of NetCloak from Maxum, which allows
customers to extend functionality of the AppleShare IP web server. Also
included is an updated version of Open Door Networks LogDoor, which
provides a sophisticated real-time display of server activity. Both
NetCloak and LogDoor applications utilize the WebSTAR API and enhance
AppleShare's overall web server functionality.

System Requirements, Compatibility and Availability AppleShare IP 5.0.2
requires an Apple Power Macintosh or Workgroup Server with a PowerPC 601,
604 or 604e microprocessor; Macintosh system software version 7.6 or later
(Mac OS 8 is recommended for use with AppleShare IP 5.0.2); Open Transport
1.1.2 or later (OT 1.2 is included with Mac OS 8); a minimum of 32MB of
RAM; a minimum of 10MB of available hard disk space; and a CD-ROM drive.
Note: RAM requirements are minimum requirements and dependent upon the
number and type of WebSTAR plug-ins used. AppleShare IP 5.0.2 is backwards
compatible with previous AppleShare servers to provide services for both
Mac OS and Windows clients and is compatible with previous versions of the
Mac OS Workstation client.
