Mac OS X Dashboard Widgets Top One Thousand
CUPERTINO, California--August 2, 2005--Apple today announced that
Dashboard, a widely acclaimed feature in its Mac OS version 10.4 "Tiger"
operating system, now has over 1,000 widgets available at
www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/, with dozens more being added every day
and many more available from other web sites. Widgets provide Mac users
with dazzling new ways to instantly access important information from
weather forecasts and stock quotes to traffic conditions and the latest
news stories. Tiger is Apple's fastest selling OS release ever and
developer support for Tiger has been incredible.
"Dashboard is a runaway hit," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice
president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "With over a thousand widgets to
choose from, users can customize their Dashboards to do almost anything."
Dashboard widgets appear instantly, giving users immediate access to a wide
range of information and entertainment. A single click makes a user's
favorite widgets instantly appear with up to the second information; with
another click they conveniently disappear from the desktop. It's easy for
third party developers to create new widgets, using standard web
technologies such as HTML and JavaScript, that users can easily and
securely download to their systems with the new Dashboard widget manager
provided in Mac OS X version 10.4.2.
In addition to Dashboard, Tiger delivers more than 200 other new features
and innovations including Spotlight, a revolutionary desktop search
technology that lets users instantly find anything stored on their Mac,
including documents, emails, contacts and images; and Automator, a new
workflow application that lets users easily automate repetitive tasks
without complex programming. Users simply select from a library of
customizable actions, then drag and drop them to create an automated
workflow that can be saved and even shared with friends and colleagues.
Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple
II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh.
Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its
award-winning desktop and notebook computers, OS X operating system, and
iLife and professional applications. Apple is also spearheading the digital
music revolution with its iPod portable music players and iTunes online
music store.
