While a wireless iPod may or may not be on Apple's roadmap for this Christmas, it's clear that DOPOD, under class 38, covers this eventuality. Some examples of this classification include "Providing access to web sites on the Internet; delivery of digital music by telecommunications; one-way and two-way paging services; broadcasting or transmission of radio and television programmes and time sharing services for communication apparatus."
What exactly the DOPOD – will actually DO – is buried in class 9. While a lot of what's listed under class 9 could certainly be considered boiler plate, some specifics are still noteworthy, such as "motion picture apparatus, mobile/video/smart phones, internet e-mail, paging and being a video game machine."
Considering that it was reported that Nvidia was awarded a major design for Apple's next generation iPod, a video game machine entry is quite relevant. The EETimes also had a report in March titled "Nvidia, Intel bring 3D gaming to handheld devices" which stated that "According to Nvidia, the Monahans platform family will offer a wide range of performance, power and integration levels to help meet the needs of mobile phones, portable gaming devices, personal media players and other consumer electronic devices. The GoForce family of handheld GPUs, including the recently launched GoForce 5500, enables advanced multimedia features such as digital TV, advanced photo imaging, surround sound audio, and 3D gaming on next-generation handheld devices." Of course using Nvidia technology would also apply in delivering iChat AV on various forms of a video-phone.
Time will tell.
