"As some of you that may have read or heard about me already know, when I was very broke and basically homeless (I couldn't afford my rent and didn't get paid for modeling jobs for 60 days.), I wrote my book at the Apple Store. At the time I was in survival mode, and the store was a rare free thing I could take advantage of for my pursuit’s sake during a very scrappy moment in my life. The store definitely helped me keep going, pursue my modeling and write my memoir. Without it, I wouldn’t have had this book. There is energy in the store that also, at times, kept my spirits. And the Apple Store does show up in the book. Actually the book starts where I am on my way to SoHo, leaving my apartment, and hustling with my suitcase, and on my way to write more of my memoir at the store before a modeling gig. The store shows up in chapter 13 on page 191. It's the day I walked into the store for the first time, curious about this "free" tech palace.
 
"I would write mostly on a iMac at the Prince Street store in SoHo. It had a great screen. Perfect to write on for hours.
 
"Sad though, I went to the 14th Street Apple Store the other day and there was sort of a time limit on using the computers. (A lady walked around saying 30 minutes and your session is over.) I hope that it was only because of a class, presentation or something. The free "use this computer as long as you want" thing is very attractive; not just to people writing memoirs, but to everyone.
 
"Even though I “wore the store out” I still find the marketing side of “letting people use the computers for free” engaging. The store is always busy, the brand always appeals to be trendy, popular and there is a lot of fun happening in the store. People are always laughing and enjoying the store -- not just using the computers. It gives off a good Apple Store vibe. Retail is now about destination shopping and the “experience,” and although I have never bought anything at the Apple Store, I have really loved it there. I still visit.
 
"This edition of Almost 5’4” is my own and it is basically off the iMac screen into a book. So it is raw, lively, and a quick read, with an honest and on-the-go tone. And whether you are models or not, the book has a fighting spirit meant for anyone chasing a dream.  I think it is more about “becoming who you want to be” than being perfect. I wanted to create a book not about just success, but about the not so glamorous moments I experienced and overcame as well. The root of “trying to do something challenging.”
