Will Internet privacy suffer in 2017?
t’s clear that 2016 was probably the worst year ever in online privacy - considering increasingly restrictive surveillance laws of governments around the world, major online hacks - such as compromised accounts of over a million Yahoo users - and authoritarian regimes blocking Internet to restrict the freedom of speech.
So, what can we expect in 2017? Will the trend continue, and will we have to face more Internet freedom restrictions and hacks by criminals? Following are the predictions for 2017 by NordVPN (www.nordvpn.com), a VPN service provider, and some advice on how to protect oneself.
Increased mobile ransomware. With ransomware, a malicious program is installed on a computer that blocks the user’s access to the system or certain files. This block is removed when the user pays the creator of the ransomware, usually in Bitcoins.
Although it is predicted that general ransomware will decrease as...

A new study from International Data Corporation (IDC) highlights IT spending trends by size class in Western Europe. The study shows that IT spending in Western European SMBs will exceed $130 billion by 2020.
The SMB segment represents a third of the total IT market, despite the relative fragility of smaller companies and their relatively small IT budgets. There will be a downward trend at the start of the forecast period that will bottom out in 2017, but then IT spending will start to increase, albeit slowly.
The study segments IT spending forecasts into three main company size bands: micro-enterprises (1–9 employees), small businesses (10–99 employees), and midmarket companies (100–499 employees). Large enterprises (employing 500 employees or more) are only considered in the study to allow comparisons with the large enterprise segment and with the total IT market.
Small businesses are the most dynamic in terms of growth among the three main size classes,...

Organizations spend an average of 5.6% of the overall IT budget on IT security and risk management, according to the most recent IT Key Metrics Data from Gartner, Inc. However, IT security spending ranges from approximately 1% to 13% of the IT budget and is potentially a misleading indicator of program success, analysts said.
"Clients want to know if what they are spending on information security is equivalent to others in their industry, geography and size of business in order to evaluate whether they are practicing due diligence in security and related programs," said Rob McMillan, research director at Gartner. "But general comparisons to generic industry averages don't tell you much about your state of security. You could be spending at the same level as your peer group, but you could be spending on the wrong things and be extremely vulnerable. Alternatively, you may be spending appropriately but have a different risk appetite from your peers.”

The Northern Spy: a less than stellar report card
By Rick Sutcliffe
Sierra's problems continue, as the Spy receives other reports of programs not functioning besides the ones cited here last month. To be fair, the Olive Tree folk managed to get their Bible Study program working on Sierra, reducing the number of fails by one.
On the other hand, he now has multiple reports of Sierra installs killing off or corrupting the keychain, and some of SSH, ITunes, and other apps failing, or running very slow. There are also compatibility issues with Apple's own Mail program, certain sound file types, and fast battery drain.
Safari is quirky too, but that was a problem in El Capitan as well--so much so the Spy has given up on the product for now and will use the ultra-reliable Firefox as his default browser.
Sometimes the upgrade process itself fails or hangs. Advice: don’t sidegrade, continue to use El Capitan, which is much more stable. But if you really want to take the leap...

Worldwide smartphone shipments are expected to reach 1.45 billion units with a year-over-year growth rate of 0.6% in 2016 according to the latest forecast from the International Data Corporation (IDC). Although growth remains positive, it is down significantly from the 10.4% growth in 2015.
However, 4G smartphones are still expected to show double-digit uptake at 21.3% year-over-year growth globally for 2016, reaching 1.17 billion units, up from 967 million in 2015. Much of this growth is coming from emerging markets (Asia/Pacific excluding Japan, Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe, and Middle East and Africa), where only 61% of 2015 smartphone shipments were 4G-enabled compared to IDC's 2016 projection of 77%, according to IDC. Mature markets (USA, Canada, Japan, and Western Europe) are further along the 4G adoption curve with 85% in 2015 and a projected 94% in 2016, respectively.

Black Friday shoppers should look for smartphone, 4K...
When the holiday stocking-stuffing season officially kicks off this Friday, tech-savvy U.S. shoppers are in for a treat, as smartphone competitors figure to begin offering special package deals and discounts on those devices.
As they head to retail outlets and shop online on Black Friday, Nov. 25, and through the holidays, American shoppers may also want to add 4K televisions, tablets and notebooks to their wish lists. Due to a variety of market factors, it’s a great time to shop for deals specifically on those types of electronics, according to new analysis from IHS Markit (ihsmarket.com), an information, analytics and solutions firm.
Ever since mid-October, when Samsung Electronics recalled its Galaxy Note 7 smartphones due to their overheating, competitors such as Apple, Sony, Google and LG Electronics have not yet been able to capitalize on Samsung’s perceived weakness with their own offers. However, things may soon be different, bringing good tidings to...

Email newsletters are now the norm for most large...
Sending email newsletters is a routine business practice for more than 80% of large organizations in the US, surpassing standalone (79%), lead nurturing (71%), and transactional (62%) emails, according to an email marketing survey from Clutch (www.clutch.co), a ratings and reviews platform for businesses.
Most organizations send out their newsletter multiple times a week, the survey found, with Monday and Friday, between 9 and 11 a.m., being the most popular periods. However, no universal rule governs when to distribute a newsletter, according to email marketing experts.
"We need to send [emails] when they will be at the top of the inbox. If the email gets buried, it is less likely to be opened and read," said Michael Barber, Founder of barber&hewitt , a strategy and planning firm focused on business-to-business (B2B) organizations.
Nearly 90% of email marketers said that email personalization is...

‘Tis the season for family and friends to slow down your home network. In today’s connected world, holiday visitors bring a collection of gadgets that require Internet – likely resulting in extremely slow Wi-Fi and unhappy guests.
Many homes are plagued by slow speeds, bad reception and other Wi-Fi issues. Additionally, more US consumers than ever – about 68% or 170 million – plan to purchase tech gifts this year. To spread holiday cheer and increase Wi-Fi speeds, D-Link is gifting tech tips and home networking gear to ensure Wi-Fi performance is up to speed during the holidays and through the new year.
“New innovative gadgets, from smart home devices to gaming consoles, will likely result in the biggest holiday season yet for the tech sector,” said Oscar Reyes, vice president of marketing, D-Link. “Considering many households haven’t upgraded their routers in years, and the majority of gifts rely on a wireless network, now is the time to enhance home networks...

Marketers: single customer view is a myth
Two thirds of marketers don’t believe they can accurately calculate the value of their customers, according to research from international marketing company BlueVenn (www.bluevenn.com).
The survey of 202 US and UK senior marketing professionals reveals a wide range of stats that shed light on marketers’ attitudes towards available tools and the most challenging elements of their roles. Data analysis tops the list of today’s challenges, with 99.5% of marketers attempting to analyze their customer data. One third of marketers, however, admits to the lack of relevant knowledge and tools to fully undertake a task that now requires more than 50% of their time.
Unsurprisingly, 72% of respondents consider data analysis to be the most important skill-set to acquire over the next two years, placing it at the top of their core marketing skills’ list above SEO and social media.

How to avoid identity theft and fraud
For the first time in history, online shopping has outweighed shopping in stores this year: consumers are now making 51% of their shopping online, compared to 48% in 2015. When people start shopping for their Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals, kicking off the Christmas shopping season, online hackers start their busy season, too.
Nearly half (48%) of consumers who shopped online in the past year have experienced payment fraud - which is nearly 80 million people. Many online shops and their clients are still not aware of simple safety protocols as we are entering deeper into all-digital age.
Online stores are huge sites of targeted attacks by hackers who try to steal users’ financial details and then use it for money laundering or other schemes. There have been too many cases where an innocent user was tricked into believing that they were entering the credit card details on a secure online store while in reality the user was providing their details to...

Small businesses' sensitive data at risk in free...
Small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) risk data security if they use free cloud storage, but nearly 25% still do, despite warnings from industry experts. In addition, new findings reveal that 11% of SMBs are storing banking information and 14% are storing medical records in free cloud storage. The data comes from a new survey by Clutch (clutch.co), a B2B ratings and reviews firm.
Storing sensitive data in free cloud storage is an ill-advised and irresponsible business practice since necessary security measures are often lacking, according to cloud experts interviewed for the report. Businesses that store banking or medical information are required to comply with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI) or Health Insurance Accountability and Portability Act (HIPAA).
"If you need to be HIPAA compliant or PCI compliant, you should be using the highest level of security that you can obtain, and usually that's not present on most free cloud storage accounts...

Here’s why pre-5G deployment will be highly targeted
Mobile Experts (www.mobile-experts.com) has released a new case study on 5G Ultra-Broadband that explores the future return on investment (ROI) for Fixed-Broadband 5G Networks. The study calculates the potential ROI for a mobile operator to invest in a 28GHz pre-5G network by comparing to LTE costs and potential costs for a sub-6GHz network using 5G technology.
The 23-page study identifies three main factors that analyze spectrum cost, link distance, and traffic density. At historical prices, 5G won’t be successful. According to Mobile Experts, inexpensive access is absolutely necessary to large spectrum blocks.
"The business case for 5G Fixed Broadband is not a slam-dunk," commented Principal Analyst Joe Madden. "We expect pre-5G deployment to be a very targeted investment by mobile operators, addressing very specific neighborhoods instead of nationwide deployment.”

Residential smart light bulb market to approach a...
The market for connected LED or “smart” light bulbs is in its embryonic stage of development, with shipments totaling fewer than 2.5 million units in 2013.
However, falling LED prices and the endorsement of ZigBee Light Link as the preferred connectivity solution by a number of leading lighting manufacturers means that annual smart bulb shipments are set to increase to 223 million by 2020, achieving a total installed base of over 400 million, according to ABI Research (www.abiresearch.com).
"Because of the additional dimensions smart lighting brings to the consumer lifestyle, including lighting automation, and because of its carbon footprint efficiency, this industry will rapidly become one of the key technologies that could bring IoE closer to consumers," Malik Saadi, practice director at the research company.
