Consultant Cowboy-Your Own Software Consultancy Business: More Starting Thoughts

by Ryan Wilcox
Oct, 2010 Issue

Article Synopsis

While the life of a rock star, software consultant cowboy sounds awesome, it's important to note that not everyone has the temperament, flexibility, or long term goals compatible with, being a consultant (or even being self employed in general). Being on your own requires a certain mentality attitude, some risk/reward gratification deferment, and personal preparation. You'll also have to deal with the preexisting financial system where, because you don't physically make anything, it could be hard for you to get financing like other people. Before you start anything, you probably should think hard about yourself and see if you can handle being a consultant, and self-employed.
