iFixit's iPhone 16 Teardown Reveals Game-...

iFixit's iPhone 16 teardown revealed a new battery removal process that does away with the usual pull tabs, instead opting for an adhesive that debonds when exposed to a low electrical current. "It only takes about a minute and a half for it to come unstuck," reports Engadget, citing Apple's repair guide. iFixit tech Shahram Mokhtari said, "I'm not sure we've ever had a battery removal process go so cleanly and smoothly." From the report: Only the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus have the new adhesive, and they've earned a 7/10 on iFixit's repairability scale. "Apple definitely seems to be leveling up on repairability," Mokhtari, adding Apple has "landed another repairability win" with this year's base iPhones thanks to the new battery removal procedure. For the past few years, Apple has been making big-budget movies meant to compete with the best traditional Hollywood studios have to offer, and it has been releasing them in theaters to drive ticket sales and awards buzz.

Much of that is about to change, according to a report from Bloomberg. The article claims that Apple is "rethinking its movie strategy" after several box office misfires, like Argylle and Napoleon.

It has already canceled the wide theatrical release of one of its tent pole movies, the George...

Apple’s true hit of 2024 isn’t the iPhone 16

Macworld

As a long-time iPhone mini fan (insert your own “THERE ARE DOZENS OF US!” gif here, I’m too bitter to find one), I have sat out a number of new iPhone purchasing opportunities over the last few years.

The rent it too high, the phones are too big.

This year, however, knowing that I would have to eventually give in to Big Phone™, and the addition of the Camera Control button on the iPhone 16 got me. I ordered an iPhone 16. It’s nice. I like it. Is it too big? Yes, it’s too big. It’s also not the most exciting thing I bought that came out of Apple’s September event.

Now hear this

The other thing I bought was the jauntily named AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation. (What’s wrong with AirPods+, Apple?) These new devices don’t do anything the AirPods Pro didn’t already do–they do less–but there are two types of ears...

Apple Rolls Back Its Big Plans to Release Movies in...

An anonymous reader shares a report: Apple is rethinking its movie strategy after the disappointing box office performance of several big-budget films, including Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon, Napoleon, Argylle and Fly Me to the Moon. Apple canceled plans to release Wolfs -- an action comedy starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt -- in thousands of theaters globally. Instead, the picture made its debut in a limited number of venues before it became available on the Apple TV+ streaming service on Sept. 27. Apple plans to use a similar approach with the next few titles on its calendar, including the World War II drama Blitz. Apple, which previously had intended to spend about $1 billion annually on blockbusters for cinemas, won't return to the big screen with a wide, global theatrical release until June with F1 -- a film starring Pitt as a former Formula One driver who returns to racing to mentor a rising star.

This 100W power bank that can fast-charge a MacBook...

Macworld

Being able to charge your laptops and smartphones and any other gadgets on the go is just what you need, especially if the battery life of your device has dropped recently. Thankfully, the Baseus Blade Laptop Power Bank is on sale for $54 at Amazon right now, down from its usual $130, so make sure you add this one to your cart.

This slim 20,000mAh battery pack is ideal for charging laptops, including your favorite MacBook, iPhones, and iPads. I personally have the second edition and wish I’d have this version instead. While this model is only a bit thicker than the second version, it has a lot more power, which is essential when charging laptops.

Still, even though this is a thicker model, it’s still slim at just 0.7 inches, making it super easy to slip into your bag next to your laptop or iPad. It also weighs just a little over a pound, so you don’t make...

The iPhone will finally kill Android in 2025

Macworld

Like a soft-hearted boxer trying to give the crowd value for money, Apple has done its best for years to keep Google standing in the smartphone ring. If it truly exerted itself, we always felt, the Cupertino Crusher could put the Mountain View Mangler on the canvas in short order. But the company could never quite bring itself to apply the coup de grâce.

The reason, of course, has nothing to do with charity—Apple simply doesn’t want to release an iPhone that’s better or more expensive to manufacture than it needs to be. It has numerous advantages over the various Android hardware vendors: it has more money to spend on R&D, it can control and optimise hardware and software together, it has better customer trust and brand recognition, and its business model isn’t based on advertising and data capture. But while an “insanely great” iPhone might kill Android as a realistic alternative, it would cut into profit...

The issue was first uncovered in 2019 when Facebook admitted to "hundreds of millions" of passwords being stored unencrypted. Facebook, now Meta, said that the passwords were not available outside of the company — but also admitted that around 2,000 engineers had made about 9 million queries on that user database.

Now Meta's operation in Ireland has finally been fined $101.5 million after a five-year investigation by the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC). The fine is levied under Europe's stringent General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

How to get WhatsApp on iPad

Macworld

WhatsApp is an incredibly popular iPhone app, connecting more than a billion active members around the world every day. It lets you send messages to friends, or groups of friends, over Wi-Fi or 4G/5G and make savings on your phone bill. (Of course, you may end up paying for data if you go over your limit, so don’t go crazy!)

Unfortunately, right now WhatsApp is only available for iPhone–there isn’t a version of the app for the iPad despite the fact that WhatsApp boss Will Cathcart (in January 2022) acknowledged in an interview that people had been asking for an iPad app for a long time. Cathcart revealed that much of the infrastructure to develop an iPad app is already in place, but he made no immediate promises.

Things could be about to change though. WhatsApp for iPad is available as a beta via TestFlight and can be...

Apple Quietly Removed 60 More VPNs From Russian App...

Apple has pulled 60 VPNs from its App Store in Russia, according to research from anti-censorship org GreatFire. From a report: The iThing-maker's action comes amid a Kremlin crackdown on VPNs that has already seen a ban on privacy-related extensions to the open source Firefox browser. The software's developer, Mozilla, defied that ban and allowed the extensions back into its web store. In July, Apple removed at least one VPN from its Russian App Store. Cupertino removed at least 60 more between early July and September 18, according to research by GreatFire posted to its site that tracks Apple censorship. The org's research asserts that 98 VPNs are now unavailable in Russia -- but doesn't specify if the removals were made in the iOS or macOS app stores.

The End of the iPhone Upgrade?

An anonymous reader shares a New Yorker story: Ultimately, the iPhone 16 does little to meaningfully improve on the experience I had with the 12, besides, perhaps, charging with a USB-C, as my laptop does, cutting down on the number of cords I have to keep track of. Instead, the greatest leaps in Apple's hardware are largely directed at those niche users who are already invested in using tools such as artificial intelligence and virtual reality. The company has announced that, within a month or so, the new phones will be able to operate its proprietary artificial-intelligence system, which means that users may soon be relying on A.I. to perform daily personal tasks, like navigating their calendars or responding to e-mails. The 15 and 16 Pros can take three-dimensional photos, designed for V.R., using the Apple Vision Pro. Thus far, I don't use A.I. tools or V.R. with any frequency and have no intention of doing so on my iPhone.

The fact that I do not need an iPhone 16 is a...

iPhone's 80% Charge Cap Barely Boosts Battery...

A year-long test of Apple's 80% charge limit feature on the iPhone 15 Pro Max has revealed only marginal benefits to battery health. MacRumors editor Juli Clover reported her device maintained 94% battery capacity after 299 charge cycles, compared to 87-90% capacity for iPhones without the limit. The opt-in setting, introduced with iPhone 15 models, aims to extend battery longevity by restricting maximum charge.

Clover adhered strictly to the 80% limit for 12 months, noting occasional inconveniences like depleted batteries during long days. While the test showed slightly better battery health retention, Clover questioned whether the trade-off in daily usability was worthwhile. She adds: I don't have a lot of data points for comparison, but it does seem that limiting the charge to 80 percent kept my maximum battery capacity higher than what my co-workers are seeing, but there isn't a major difference. I have four percent more battery at 28 more cycles, and I'm not sure...

Apple wants a future Apple Pencil to work as a TV...

If Apple has its way, the very newest accessory for an iPad could be broadcast television as received through an Apple Pencil for some reason.

Yes, that is an Apple Pencil acting as a TV aerial for an iPad. Obviously.
If you really wanted to, you could argue that Apple has a history of working with broadcast television, since it even had a Macintosh TV in 1993. Not the most successful Mac design ever made, it was painted black, came with a built-in TV tuner, and is said to have sold only around 10,000.

It also didn't include everything you needed to get the about-320x200 broadcast television of the day. You still had to plug a TV aerial or a cable connection into the back of the card before it could show you anything.

Remote work is great for flexibility, but it can open up an avenue for bad actors, privacy invasions and more, unless you use a great VPN for iPhone like Surfshark.

Surfshark VPN for remote work
You might think a Virtual Private Network (VPN) is only useful for protection during travel or staying private while using public Wi-Fi, but there are many more uses beyond those. If you work from home or away at an office, a VPN client can provide a new layer of protection via a secure connection you didn't even realize you need.

Whether you're working from a company-issued computer or your personal device, there are a lot of reasons to use a VPN for remote work. It can prevent oversharing with your boss or a potential bad actor that's snooping...

The European Commission announced on Wednesday that it had secured over a hundred signatures from companies signing up to the EU Artificial Intelligence Pact. Made up of voluntary pledges, the pact asks companies to work to ensure that AI is safe and produced in a responsible way.

The list of companies taking part in the pact includes quite a few major names, including Adobe, Google, IBM, HP, Qualcomm, Microsoft, and Open Ai, the creator of ChatGPT. However, that list doesn't include two major names in AI: Apple and Meta.

Apple's iPhone 16 lineup went through several different prototype stages, as is typically the case for new hardware projects. During these various development stages, the company sometimes makes significant design changes, altering the appearance of devices in the process.

In other situations, however, Apple can remove new hardware features. This can happen for a variety of reasons, depending on the situation in question. The company has to make sure that new hardware components adhere to...

Apple's global supply chain relies on multiple companies to provide displays for its iPhones, iPads, and Macs. However, while Chinese producer BOE has had a troubled existence within the supply chain, its status may become a little tougher to maintain.

With the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro, it has never been clearer that the cycle of radical invention has given way to iterative updates—not just on an annual basis, but a monthly one, due to delayed features coming in later software updates during the iOS 18 cycle.

The final form of the smartphone as we know it has been reached and nearly perfected. Nothing fundamental is changing anymore. But if you take the long view of just a few years, you can still see some impressive progress.

Year after year, the iPhone 16 is Apple’s most lightly iterative flagship...
